Flightsuits: Dark Seal Goat or Vintage Light Cowhide?

Post by Flash Gordon »

A quick poll from Flightsuits owners:

Which do you think is better?

Dark Seal Goat or Vintage Light Cowhide?

Which would YOU buy?

First, this is sort of a loaded question. It really is a question of ones personal taste.
Second, I've been on the FS site, and as far as I can see,
they don't offer anything called "light vintage cowhide". They do have a "vintage" color in the lambskin hide that is lighter then the seal. So I'm just a bit confused.

Are you wanting to know which is a more accurate color?
The seal is probably as close as your going to get in that category.

Flash,

What you are calling "light vintage cowhide" is probably the "Vintage Brown" cowhide. (There is a much darker cowhide called, appropriately enough, "Vintage Dark Brown.")

The lighter of the two, "Vintage Brown," is very, very light. It is almost a light caramel color. It is much lighter in person than as represented in the catalog photographs. (The "Vintage Dark Brown" is very dark. From a distance, it could come off as black.)

For what it is worth, I think the "Vintage Brown" would be too light for an Expedition (I assume that is what we are talking about here!)

I agree with Bushman, the light vintage cowhide is too light if you are looking for accuracy. Also be aware that Flightsuits offers two different shades of seal brown goatskin; dark seal & light seal. The light seal would be considered the more accurate of the two. Cheers

Man, Flightsuits website must be pretty out of date. I couldn't find any reference to those colors. Am I just not looking in the right place?
That wouldn't be the first time.
Short of getting a handful of samples sent in, I would love to at least see picturesofthese new offerings.
Are these shown in the current catalog?

Indiana Joe has the Vintage Dark Brown, but we've yet to see pictures of it.

G&B's website is way out of date. Don't know what keeps them movin' at a snails pace.

As Rundquist stated, the light seal is best. However, the new dark distressed cow hide sample I have here is pretty cool.

Someone was squealing about that stuff at the end of last year...Indydawg I think.

Tempted to get one but I'll let Rundquist do the honors. It's going on a few months now since he's bought an Expedition...he's due for a new one.

Well, I can hopefully put your questions to rest in about 5 days. I got the “light vintage cowhide” Expedition off the website clearance sale page (I think that’s why Dalexs couldn’t find it-they are not offering it in this shade any longer) this afternoon and should be in my hands in a few days. What I’m hoping is that a coat of the dark brown Pecards now, and then at the end of winter/spring a coating of the standard Pecards is going to darken the jacket up considerably. It sounds pretty light, but not as light as some of these folks are making out. I’ve seen Indiana Joe’s, and yes, it was me who was raving about it…which is why I’m getting this one-I want to see it in person. And if I don’t like it or think it won’t take the Pecards the way I want to, I can just send it back….so, I can’t see how I can lose here.

And I’m not after screen accuracy here, either, so I don’t have to worry about all THAT insanity;-)

So, in a few days, I will have some pics to see of the light vintage cowhide anyway…

Later!

Thanks for your input! I was asking because they were on sale.

Indydawg bought the cowhide on the sale page, and I bought the goat.

When I went to place my order over the phone, the girl at Flightsuits (Veronica) had them both in her hands, and she polled the guys around the office and they said the goat looked better to them.

It was a hard choice, since I couldn't see either of them. She also measured the length of the jacket back and sleeves, and it may be a little short. But as Indydawg says, if it doesn't work out, I can always send it back.

Now I'll get to see what all the hubbub about the Expedition is. My Wested has been terrific, (except for the action pleats) and I'll now get to compare.

The Wested lamb for dressier times, and the Expedition goat for hard wearing?

I'm baaaack! AND I have comparsison photos of the Dark Vintage pre-distressed cowhide from Flightsuits with my pre-distressed cowhide Wested. It's about time!! Taken in direct sunlight, the pics are now on my computer and I'm awaiting a response from one of our distiguished gearheads---I've asked him to host the photos for me.

The regular vintage is quite light and I can't wait to see Indydawg's jacket after the treatment. Hint, hint, dawg!!

The dark vintage cowhide swatch that I had received appeared very dark but was better suited to my tasted when compared to the much lighter regular vintage cowhide swatch. Anyway, upon receiving the cowhide Expo a few months ago, I was surprised to see that this dark vintage Expedition was not as dark as I was expecting. For those of you familiar with Flightsuits colors, I would place the dark vintage cowhide in between my dark brown lambskin Expo and seal chrome goat Expo. I think the colors appear differently on different skins but I digress. One thing though--sometimes the appearance depends on how the light hits the jacket. Depending on whether I'm indoors or out, cloudy or sunny, at times the jacket appears seal in color and other times it seems VERY dark. It took me some getting used to it but now I think it's kinda cool.

One more thing. The jacket distresses very well. I've not used any chemicals nor sandpaper nor leather dressing (yet) and it's beginning to look like the Indy jacket I've always wanted.

Hopefully I'll hear back soon and we can get some pictures up!

I agree with you Patternson, I also own a goat from FS, you can't beat it if I may be so bold. I am in the process of ordering another Expedition, this time in a nice Lambskin. I have never owned a lamb Indy Jacket, just my Goat FS and my cowhide Wested. I am also thinking of having a Expe. made in horsehide as I love my Historical A-2 from them, wonderful hide, would make a nice look.
