HELP!! Emergency Whip Repair!

I have a Todd's 8fter. And the tip has been loose for sometime. In another thread, kwad attempted to instruct me on how to repair it. I put it off because it seemed too #### daunting. But today the core of the whip started peaking on through and I decided it was time to go ahead and try and fix this thing.


Well, it didn't go so great.




So I suppose my question is... how the #### do you rebraid these last couple inches? I can find plaiting tutorials online for pretty much everything but six strands.

I did find a video on how to tie the crown knot (this Bernie fella on Youtube seems to know his stuff), but I can't really well do that until I rebraid these last couple inches.


Anyone up for the challenge on helping restore my precious whip back to its former glory?

That's probably the pattern you are looking for. Have you considered sending it back to the maker to have them re-plait the point? Most makers will do this for whips they made not much more than the cost of a fall replacment.

For us totally uninitiated in the world of whipmaking-- how do we know which strand to start with?


And I kinda doubt Todd would do that since he doesn't make the whips himself... As I've said, this is a cheapy Todd's 8fter.

Look into David morgan's book on plaiting, Ron Edwards book on whip making or Bruce Grant's book on braiding. All three will teach you how to do a round six plait.

I probably wouldn't hurt to contact the maker or seller to let them know this happened and that it is potentially a design or manufacturing issue that way they if they address it now it will save other people the same problem later.

Many whip makers have gotten started by constantly repairing inferior whips...

I dont think rebraiding here would even be necessary. Looks to me like you just have to attach a new fall and braid a series of half hitches, thus creating your own "fall hitch". It´s not that hard to do. I learned myself from David Morgans tutorial http://www.davidmorgan.com/fallreplacement.html Scroll down to Fall Replacement Method 2 . Bernie Wojcicki´s videos on Youtube are also a great resource to actually see this being done. You will be surprised as to how easy it actually is.

I tried that-- as I said, the core was sticking out considerably-- I just tied it in with the (very sloppy) hitch seen above.


I suppose that'll have to work for the time being...


In the meantime... I have a birthday coming up in a few days-- thinking about getting a new whip... Can anyone suggest a decent cowhide whip for less than $200? If not, I'm gonna just look at another Todd's.

I think you can still get a whip from Gus for about $200ish.

or look into whips made by Arturo on ebay, he's got a decent looking indy whip. I've only cracked one of his whips and I think it's a good deal for the price.

Gus' 12 plait is $240. Can't really afford that right now.

There's also Graeme Roberts. His cowhide whips are under $200. But if you need a whip soon, then you could go with Todd's newer whip. Although I don't even know if you could get it as soon as you'd like.

Hey, don't blame me!

I'm with Bravo, you just need to retie the fall hitch.
It takes a few tries to figure it out for the first time, but, it is well worth taking the time to learn.
If a little bit of the core is sticking out when you are done, just clip it off.

All is not lost, just keep trying.
(Unless you need an excuse to buy a new whip! You can never have too many!)

I know that several words that cannot be repeated here passed my lips when I first attempted a fall hitch!
It's just one of those things that once you "get it", it becomes quite easy.

Cost is most definitely a factor as I'm currently unemployed...

Graeme's whip looks like a decent alternative to Todd's for the price, though.

Sorry for the snarkiness of the reply. With all due respect these whip threads are getting rather grating. For reasons I hope I don't have to enumerate. But I will because it's late and I'm bored:
1. If you want the look, wait and get a roohide whip
2. If you want the cracking, don't wait and get a nylon whip.
3. "No guts no good"
4. A whip "designed" for cracking is a well designed whip. Not only does it LOOK good but it will be weighted right, oiled right, and made right from the seller to you. There is no cheap way around that. Figure 300 as a good minimum figure. Then you'll have it all.
5. Talk to people who make and use whips. We have a lot of them. Then listen to what they have to say, not what you want to hear. That's so important as of late I'm going to say it again. 6. Don't be surprised IF something happens to your whip after you crack one that does follow rule number four. Again, "Designed for cracking"
7. Know your whip maker by name. Know your jacket make by name. Heck, know your mechanic by name.
8. Communication is key.

I'm pretty well aware what I'm getting into, I think. I knew what to expect when I bought Todd's whip. Not all of us have the benefit of a deep pocket and a fat wallet here. I made a compromise. And I'll make another one again because that's what I have to do.


What I want is a leather whip. If I can't wear it with my gear, I'm not interested, simple as that. So nylon's out. The next factor is price so roohide is out.

From there that leaves kip and my aim now is to find the best balance in price and performance for a kiphide whip.

Price is a terrible way to buy a whip but I get you. Check out James Emery of Classic Bullwhips. A glance at his site gives a price for an eight foot cowhide whip at $280. That will get you a well made whip. A whip that looks the part and performs well. Look at some of the threads about his cowhide whips. They look amazing. And no one says you can't wear nylon with your gear. If you can have a rubber gun, you can have a nylon whip. Best of ALL worlds if your looking for a compromise. I don't get why GH's won't wear them because at this stage of development they are better then anything in the price range, natural hide included. I mean really we shouldn't need these threads because we know what the SA whip is and it's still being made.

I can tell you that Graeme's whip do perform as well as they look. I have a kiphide 8 ft LC in natural tan. Ever since I got it I've been cracking it every week. Nice tight plaiting and taper. It's a very good whip for a good price. I'm sure others who have a whip from Graeme enjoy their's and can agree that they are great. You can check those threads out too, including mine.

BaptisteTheFool, I'm going to back up Hollywood again somewhat but with a little bit of a different emphasis.

I don't think I need to tell you, but you don't need to be buying an expensive whip or whips period. If you are unemployed, you need to worry about more important things. Whips aren't important for your survival.

If you feel strongly about buying another, Hollywood does make a point. I'm not sure I would have said it quite the same way But it is the blunt truth. If you are on a budget, go nylon. It's wonderful stuff and from an excellent maker, you'll get awfully close to the feel or 'roo.

I'm not sure I'd recommend sending it back. They are props made for cracking once in a blue moon. If you can get it repaired, do it. You paid for the whip after all. I'd suggest even trying to do it yourself through texts and video. At least this way you'll learn something in the long run.

According to Todd's website they aren't prop whips:
"THIS IS A REAL WHIP! This is not a toy, or novely whip. These are made just like the whip(s) Indiana Jones carried on his adventures...These whips perform as good as they look...Whips with these features usually cost two to three TIMES more! Don't pass this up!"

In my opinion if a seller says this whip is comparable to a $300 whip...when one comes back as faulty the seller can't say, "Well it was only $100".

In the world of whip seller there is a lot of hype and the people who pimp out their whips should back up their hype.

What can you lose by calling Todd's and asking for it to be fixed...5 minutes to write an email...If I was unemployed it sounds like a great financial gamble to me.

True...and I know there's this debate about his whips. His website says they aren't prop whips and that they have the same features. I called it a prop whip because it is a prop whip. Regardless of claims which have shown otherwise. But since you do have a point that he makes this claim and it's misleading, then I would send an email his way. I didn't know he claimed that on his website.
