Wal mart check out girl and my AB CS

Post by beaverlid »

I went to Wal Mart to pick up some last minute items for thanksgiving and when I was checking out the young lady at the register complimented my AB CS and said that it could almost pass as an Indiana Jones hat, except the ribbon is all wrong. :-k

I gave her a smile and thanked her for the compliment and went on about my business. I just wanted to let Steve at AB know so he could correct this problem with his ribbon's on the AB line of fedoras.

For a split second I was tempted to tell her that this fedora and ribbon were an exact match to the Indy hat because it was made by the hatter of the movie. Then I thought she wouldn't believe me anyway so decided to be content with the fact that I knew and she didn't need to. Besides she gave a compliment and there was no need to lecture her.

Better pay attention to the voice of reason and change that ribbon! ;)

 I wore a CS fedora to see a friend at his business recently. His clerk, not knowing I made the last film hats commented. "looks kinda like the hat from that last film, but I can tell it ain't" I laughed, but never said anything. I was tempted to say he was right, this was a Croc Dundee hat, but wasn't in the mood(nursing a virus). Otherwise I would have messed with him a bit.

I am going through a dry spell on comments though. Don't get em much these days.

I find that it usually is best to take the compliment as is. Chances are, they don't really want to have a full conversation about a hat (other than appreciating how nice it is) and by going off into a lecture of sorts, all you do is deflate the initial compliment. That way, we remain content in knowing the truth, but they remain content in that they were allowed to pay a compliment. ;)

That said, you really should do something about that ribbon, Steve. Have you thought about putting a pin with Indy's name on it? All the movie hats had them. ;)

And Marc spent all that time and money finding the wrong ribbon...what a shame.

Maybe you could add some croc toe claws to the Indy 5 hat ribbon to spruce it up. You know, change things up a bit!!

I had a similar moment this weekend when I went into the grocery store. I was wearing my AB, with a Carhart coat and plaid shirt, my standard civvy uniform. I was running my my card at the checkout, and the bagger (a lady about my mothers age) looked at me intently for a few seconds. She said "You know, that is a great hat on you." No "Hey, Indy" remark or anything, just a genuine compliment. Nice to hear every now and then.

Where the hat with pride!

Regards,
AFI

Many people i've spoken to refuse to believe Indy had a bow on his hat. It doesn't fit their pre-conceived idea of what cowboy hat should look like. They obviously haven't cared enough about the subject to know what a fedora is.

I had a very similar comment. Someone said "yeah but i doubt Indy had a bow on his hat. That would have look silly."

I put it down to humans say anything in conversation to look clever. No one wants to look stupid but they end up doing so simply by trying not to.

Can you imagine the response if you complimented a lady on her dress. She'd be talking to all her friends about how ridiculous you sounded and how little you understood the design etc.

So did I, and its my story! I swear, one of these days I'm going to start the Netchurebillin Hat Co. They will all be made of leather and without bows. Sweats installed by hand on a machine, of course. How does $400 sound? They will come with the SoC treatment already done. All you have to do wait for the "nice Indy hat!" compliment. And when they ask if its leather, you can respond with a resolute "yes!"

I have another thread up about a hat block I have. I wanna use it to reblock something, and Ive decided to reblock this:

Image

Its an old Bailey western with a grosgrain ribbon and bow. Ive had it creased a number of different ways, but this is how it looks now.

by saying "it's wrong" she may not have been commenting on the type, but the colour..

If yours was clean I can imagine that it would differ a great deal from the colour of the band in CS which from memory was quite dusty and lighter than a 'clean' band.

beaverlid, you could have at least asked her how you could improve the ribbon to make it correct.
The answer would be interesting reading at least.

W4l M4rt? Google "peopleofwalmart" and you'll get to see a photo collection of folks from the shallow end of the gene pool.

In any case, I got a compliment on my hat yesterday at the Santa village at the local mall.
I took my 2 year old to see Jolly St. Nick. While waiting, I put him on a train for kids. The old lady that was working it said "I really like your hat, young man."

Then she got a lump in her throat and continued "my husband wore a hat just like that and you just don't see many like that anymore." From the way she said it, folks, and her lack of wedding ring and the use of "wore" pretty much told me that he was gone. But I thanked her for the compliment.

When I was in Europe over the summer, some British guys and some Italians guys, (on completely isolated occasions), said that they liked my "American Cowboy Hat". :-k

When I went to Venice though, there were all these vendors selling white Fedoras, a bit like Belloq's. They were everywhere (and a very touristy thing to have, of course). :[

These people who contradict the Indy fedora kill me. I guess it's chalked up to them only believing what they believe, or what they think they know is right. I've gotten many, many comments about how my hats aren't even close to what Indy wears.

Like:

"That hat he wore in the movie was made of leather."

"Nope, that's NOT an Indiana Jones hat. My son has one, and it even has an Indiana Jones pin on the side!"

So, I'm definitely for the whole idea of making the hats of leather, sans bows/ribbons, and including a pin. I've obviously been wearing the wrong hats. I mean, come on, we all know Indy wears a cowboy hat, jeans, and waxed cotton jacket! (Guess maybe those boots were probably Sebagos or Timberlands, too.).

I have had a couple people question or should I say challenge me on my Indy knowledge on occasion... mostly casual conversation about the subject with people I already know don't have nearly the info and resources I do. So after one round of defending my stance and realizing it's just going to go round and round I usually say something to the effect of "I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong." then just walk away.

This happens to me with watches, too-Ill wear a really nice Laco/Lacher Flieger Pilot and someone will say something about how they saw a watch like that in a movie about WWII or similar. I just smile and unless they keep going I don't bring up the history of it all. Most people aren't ready for the onslaught!

This is kinda opposite of Beaverlid's encounter at WalMart . . .

I was at Leesburg, FL bike rally last summer sporting my Penman Raider's and a hat vendor asked me if I wanted to buy the Real McCoy.

Thinking he might have a used AB for sale, I said 'Sure, I'll take a look.'

It was a wool Dorfman with a pin.

I could only smile, then said 'No offense, but you need to stick to biker hats!' and walked on.

I've got several screen grabs on my phone so that i can prove my point.

In an official road awareness test carried out by the British authorities people were asked to watch a video of a car crash reconstruction and were then asked questions. One of the questions was "how fast would you estimate the white van was travelling?" But the van in the video was blue. Most people not only didn't notice the deliberate mistake but also argued passionately with the few that said the van was blue. The debate got guite heated and most people were willing to swear on a Bible in a court of law that the van was white.

I think this just goes to show how people think their always right.

That is why "eye witness" testimony is so unreliable. You as 10 people what they saw & you'll get 10 different answers. Fortunately I haven't encountered the ignorant ones out there as of yet with my Camptown's on. The only time I might get the Indy comment is through a compliment & it is usually while I'm wearing my rose/grey 1947 Stetson Whippet. Something like, "I love your Indy hat." :-s Leaves one taken aback, and all you can do is smile & say thank you. It was a compliment after all.

Sort of like if you are held up by a person with a black or dark colored weapon, most eyewitness testimony says it was a dark skinned person and not someone of Caucasian descent because of the dark weapon.

Wore mine to pick up my daughter at school on Wednesday and got called "Amish".

I was like really?! We're so removed from the fedora in our culture that your best reference when you see one is the Amish?

No offense to the Amish of course.

I just smiled and said, "Thanks?"
