I haven't browsed this thread in some time. Probably not since the last post I made here. There have been some fantastic hats recently. Great bash jobs, just great looking hats.. period. Good work guys!

Hi,
I wonder what will happen if I use warm water to bash my fed IV deluxe. Have you ever tried to do it?
Thanks,

You dont need warm water. I use distilled room temp water in a spray bottle. Works perfectly.

After looking through these pages I decided to fiddle with my hat again. I have thought, for a long time, that the front of the crown was just a little too high, given the block, so I worked the front down about a quarter inch.

This shot shows the overall side view: height and general swoop.

Image

This one shows the top and side pinches pretty well.

Im even more pleased with these results than I was before, and I really liked what it was before. :)

Nice work Scottyrocks!

And in terms of using hot water on your Federation, Wojtek. I had to use LARGE amounts of steam to get my Deluxe into shape. [I didn't try the room temp distilled water method, but may as I plan to tweak my hat soon.] But which model are you referring to, Regular or Deluxe?

The regular I owned was nothing short of a helmet. BUT, knowing what I do now, I could have handled it. It was only the second attempt I made at bashing, and was quite intimidated by the sheer stiffness of it.

Thats the nice thing about sprayed water. It makes the felt, even on the standard Fed IV, which I have, very easy to work with. With steam there is always the danger of overdoing it, which could damage (shrink) the hat, even if only a little. Not so with room temp water, at least in my experience.

My oldest Fed 4 (a deluxe) was much easier to bash with the use of heavy steam.

The hat started out very stiff and difficult to work with. But after nearly 2 years of wearing and abuse the hat has soften very much, as well as lightened up.

Question: I can't help but want to sand down my fed IV to make the felt smoother, less hairy/shaggy/fuzzy (not that it is shaggy to begin with...).

Should I do this, and if so, what is the best course of action (grit of the sandpaper, means of sanding)?

If not, what other methods do you recommend?

Yep, it's posted in both the announcements section:

and in Lao Che's:

...Though a bit later than I wanted, I'm giving general membership fair warning of our (now) annual holiday closing of the board. To allow for the staff to enjoy the season with their families, give them a much deserved break, and to conduct site maintenance…

The forum boards will once again be closed from December 24 through January 2nd.

We hope you all won't miss the place too much and enjoy the season with your families and loved ones. We'll see you on the other side of the holidays and look forward to tales of all the gear acquired from whichever holiday you observe...

Some terrific looking hats here, guys.

I'm especially impressed with the center dents some of you have managed to get. I know I'm like a broken record on this point, but I've never been able to get the deep center dent I see on Indy's hat. In order to get it, the crown would be too short and it would taper horribly. It wouldn't be that big a deal to me, but I can't get the camel humps as defined as I want in the front.

Maybe I just need to work the felt some more. :-k

Well, as you can see from my pictures, the trick to getting the dent just right is to have somebody put a baby crocodile on your hat... :[

By 'blank' I assume you mean an uncreased, or unbashed hat.

The Akubra Federations, the current one being the IV, comes uncreased, and you do it yourself. Its really not at all difficult. All you need is water in a spray bottle, and your fingers. As to whether it came out 'okay,' thats entirely up to you. If you like it, then it came out okay. And you can play with it endlessly, fine-tuning it to look the way you want it to.

Just got my Fed IV Deluxe. I bashed it using only my hands. No water or steam or anything. And my niece was kind enough to display it for me, though she has informed me she won't go out in public with me if I'm wearing it. Too bad for her. :P

Well, I think it's about high time to show you all my own Akubra Federation IV. I got it as a Christmas gift from my parents, and it is my first ever fur felt fedora (I also have a wool felt and a Panama-style).

Some pictures of me actually wearing it:

Resting while on a long hike in the hills... I did that today too.

This was when I got it on Christmas Day.

A picture taken during one of my daily walks. I always wear my Federation while doing that actually.

The regular and deluxe are dimensionally the same hat. The browns are also the same color. The differences are in the quality of the felt, and the sweatband, the deluxe being of higher quality in both, resulting in a higher price. I have a regular, however, and couldnt be happier with it. I think its beautiful, and feels great both on and off my head.

You will read opinions on both sides of this. Some will say the regular is perfectly fine, and others will say that you have to get the deluxe.

For lots more info on this, as well as other hats, check out the Fedora Lounge. There are threads there dedicated to the Federation IV that were instrumental in my purchase of mine.
