Oh dear. It hadn't occurred to me to add this stuff up. Gulp. LOL

Here's my lineup:

AdventureBilt Deluxe: $1200
Tony Nowak CS jacket: $700
Todd's shirt: $50
MKVII bag: $45
Todd's holster: $30
Alden boots: $344
Todd's weapon belt: $30
Wade Egan whip holder: $27
Close enough whip for costume purposes: $150
Wade Egan bag strap: $45
What Price Glory pants: $143

Some of these figures are a bit higher because, where possible, I included my ACTUAL costs including shipping...not just the list price of the item.

My grand total: $2,764

As far as I'm concerned, that puts me well below the costs of many other hobbies. Plus, there are several items which I simply chose to buy the best (e.g. AB Deluxe) instead of something that would be "just good enough". So, before you let the numbers scare you off, consider Michaelson's words: you can play this game for less than most people spend on other hobbies.

Since when did an ABDeluxe, even with shipping, come to $1,200.00? I know Marc raised his prices, but I didn't think they went up that much. Is this for multiple hats?

No, that's accurate.

I ordered my hat in April of 2008 and the price of an AB Deluxe was €798.
The Euro was stronger against the dollar than it is today. But, even at today's rates €798 is $1163.

Today, the AB Deluxe is nearly €200 cheaper than when I bought mine.

That's interesting. Because, even if the price dropped after I bought mine, that's only €445 for a Deluxe. I wasn't aware that Marc had ever dropped his price below €599 which equates to $873.

You got a deal. :)

Marc just raised the price of the AB Deluxe (check the thread in the Vendor Announcement section) to 599 euro. It used to be 399 euro (I believe).

I had no idea that the same hat had been priced over such a broad range of prices in the last 18 months.

It's a great hat, to be sure. I certainly feel that I've got far more value than I paid for.

With the raw edge brim at 599 Euros, that still doesn't come out to over $1,000 USD. Here is the current exchange rate as of today:

Live rates at 2009.09.29 22:20:08 UTC
599.00 EUR = 873.179 USD

1 EUR = 1.45773 USD 1 USD = 0.685999 EUR

But you got one of, if not the best, hand made beaver hats that money can buy. I'm glad that I got my ABD before the major price increase, as I certainly could not afford one of those now.

I agree 100%.

You may have missed the statement I made above where I stated that the price when I bought mine was €798, not €599.

At today's rates €798 is $1163. The exchange rates of April 2008 were a little more in favor of the Euro than the dollar so it was actually a bit more than $1,200 when I made my purchase.

I'm happy to clarify this stuff for anyone with questions....but do you guys honestly think I don't know what I paid for my hat? :D :-k

I'm just a bit confused... I never heard of the price for an AB Deluxe being that high. I have only known it as 399 euro, and now 599 euro.

I just found a post from May 23rd, 2008 that stated that the price for an AB Deluxe was 399 euro. I would double check that if I were you.

In that case I think you may have been over-charged. It doesn't make sense that in April of 2008 the price for an AB Deluxe would be 798 euro, and a month later 399 euro (after the May 22nd price jump with the release of KOTCS).

To be honest, it's been so long ago now that I don't remember. If I had any special requests about the hat, I don't remember. Evidently I did.

Mine has a solid gold lining. Maybe that's it. ;)

BTW, I didn't mean to hijack this thread with this sub-topic. I'm going to clean up some of these posts.

I think it is time to get this thread back on topic. I'd post my costs, but I didn't keep a good record of them. I just know this was the most expensive or second most expensive costume I've ever put together. As we've seen from the budget Indys, a "close enough" costume can be scrounged up for little expense, while some choose to get top of the line gear that can really add up quickly.

I do apologize for getting off track... so here is my on-topic contribution:

Hats:

Akubra Federation IV Deluxe: $140
Adventurebilt Deluxe: $650
Penman Grey Seaplane: $265
Penman Last Crusade: $320
Adventurebilt CS: $410
Adventurebilt Raiders (bought from member here): $175

Clothes:

Noel Howard Shirt: $75
Todds Indy Shirt: $45
Adventurebilt Indy Shirt: $95
Oak Creek close-enough pants: $35
Wested Washed Goat Jacket: $230
US Wings Jacket: $250
Todds Adventurer Boots: $65
Web Belt: $5

So grand total for me is roughly $2760.00

Oops, I forgot about the Azuma Last Crusade Shirt that I just ordered, so tack on another $61.50, bringing my final grand total to: $2821.50

But the good news is I think I am done now. I don't need anything else. In fact, I am slowly started to sell some of my things and might have a sale in the upcoming future.

To jnicktem:

That's a tidy sum for hats and clothes. Do you have the gun belt, holster, gun or replica, whip, or MarkVII bag?

My father has a MarkVII bag and a Winrich IOAB whip, so I can't really count those as mine. I also have a large gun collection, but none of them are Indy guns, but can play the part if needed.

I thought this hobby was supposed to be expensive!

Post by Farmboy »

I was raised to ask 'why buy it if you can make it just as good yourself?'
I have no problem with being 'close enough'; I get plenty of nice compliments anyway and I don't feel bad getting my gear dirty!

Fedora--$0 (family heirloom--my great-grandfather's from the '20s)
LL Bean Akubra--$20 (A more practical, wider-brimmed hat)
Jacket--$0 (" my great-uncle's A-2 from The Big One)
trousers--$2.50? (Goodwill--good color, no pleats, flap pockets)
shirt--$12? (Old Navy--took off third pocket to make epalettes)
web belt--$4? (Army surplus, dyed darker brown)
gun belt--$5? (nice quality from Dollar General)
satchel--$10? (modified M17 gas bag, another DG belt for shoulder strap)
Boots--$100 (Rockport Farnums)
whip--$4? (brown ductape, rubber tubing, and some scrap wood)
whipholder--$0 (cardboard & some brass fasteners)
dummy gun--$10 (Dollar store clicker gun and a can of bondo)
S&W Victory--$320 (+$15 for the lanyard ring)
Holster--maybe $10 worth of leather, but made it myself.

Artifacts:
Zippo--$5? (1947 IM paintjob by me)
FoA stone disks--$0 (ceramics class)
Holy Grail--$0 "
Chachapoyan idol--$0 "
Willendorf Venus--$0 "
obsidian knife--$0 (birthday present)

without the revolver, right around $170.
with the Smith, $490 or so.

Well ok then. Not sure what to say about that, except that it is the "eh, close enough" people who are responsible for abominations like this:

I know, I'm feeling snobbish tonight. I'm sure your gear is fine, but it was that bit about 'why buy it if you can make it just as good yourself?' that bugged me. You saying that your ducked tape whip is just as good as a Morgan?

I'd love to see some pics.

Here's one from last May: (note the cardboard holster--from before I acquired the revolver)

Keep in mind that about the only time I wear more than boots, belt and jacket together is for the kids at summer camp, or for drunk college students on Halloween--and neither of those are very discriminating.
I guess I'm more into having the '1930s archaeologist' style (dressing like Indy) than I am about dressing up as Indy. Since for me it's more of an outfit than a costume, I've never had the need for high-quality, high-dollar, screen-accurate gear.
