I can't tell you how many times I've visited this great, great thread... but I've just realized that I actually haven't written anything here yet!

(I think I got confused from writing praising comments to both fedoraiders and Holt on their own separate threads that featured their amazing SoC Hats!)
But now that I've realized that I never DID post here on this thread... I'm prompted to ask myself:
"What's left to say about these amazing replicas of my most favorite Indy Hat that hasn't already been said"

(And said really WELL, by the way!)

Nothing really...

But by writing this comment I've at least ensured that I get notified when new posts arrive on this thread!

(And you never know... One day - hopefully - I'll be able to contribute a shot or two of my own SoC Hat.)

Now that I have the crown and brim SA, I just want my hat to naturally gain that "used and abused" look the o'naturale way.

I'm very impressed with the skills of members like fedoraiders and Holt. The only thing that always bothered me on the Federation is the color never seems right. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I got my Henry. That color was spot on, in my eyes. The pics I have posted before and are a bit overlighted, but stay with me. The hat has a bit of SoC going on, but I actually see it more as the Flying Wing/Truck Chase hat.

Hello Richard! I Like your SOC hat very much, i like your all pictures but i love the second and third pictures. On the second picture your front pinch is perfect, i realy sur that your front pinch mesure 4 3/8 or 4 1/2 maximum, 4 3/8 or 4 1/2 it's the best height. Your brim is perfect too. On the third picture, the center bash is perfect same as Raiders.

Thanks for the compliment Fedoraiders! You're right, my front pinch is 4 1/2". I've cut my brim, so it's not SA, but matches my face better. In comparison to Holt's

3" front/back and 2 1/2" sides, I've got 2 1/2" front/back and 2 1/4" sides.

The best of the best sizes for a SOC hat are:
front pinch: 4 3/8" or 4 1/2"
Side: 4 7/8" or 5"
Back: 3 1/2" or 3 5/8"
Brim front/back: 2 7/8" or 3"
Brim sides: 2 3/8" 2 1/2" or 2 5/8"

But you are right when you write " I've cut my brim, so it's not SA, but matches my face better. " This detail is very important and i'm realy sur that the " Brim sides " it's more important for great look on the miror.

The length of the brims sides, changes the shape of the hats. If the brims sides are shorter, the crown appear more higher.

I don't understand when you write " so it's not SA ". What is " SA ", sorry for my ignorance.

I have a anothers questions, your hat, is it a Standard or Deluxe and is it's Federation 3 or IV. By curiosity, is it a 57cm.

No this hat is the factorymade AdventureBilt Henry, size 56. However, my first hat was a Fed 3 deluxe, size 57. The crown height and the color always bothered me and I couldn't get it to look like a Raiders hat. So I bought a Henry when they came out.

Michael is right, SA=Screen Accurate. So that means it's identical to the movie. You will see that term a lot around here and the other sections as well.

This is my try to achieve the SOC look.
Without the fuller earth or any kind of dirt (artificial I mean).

Always the same hat, the first pics are from my last trip in Europe and Egypt, on last may. The last ones are a few days ago, so you can see more details.

The big thing about being screen accurate(SA) is those specs, just won't work on everyone. You have to have Ford's facial and head shape to use those. So, some adjusting may be needed for these projects, in order that the hat matches the facial shape etc.

I have had my own line sent back to me a few times to reduce the brim size, at my own request when pics were posted here in the past. I don't want any of my hats to look "dorky" and without the right specs for the particular person, it can indeed look dorky to me. Perhaps dorky is not the right word though.

So, let's just say, the hats don't always match the facial shape close enough to look "right"

I am so impressed at how we have so many folks now playing with their hats, and turning out outstanding SOC fedoras, which to me, is the most difficult one to replicate. This year has seen alot of creativity from many guys here, and it just tickles me to death!! This is what Indy Gear is all about!! This is the essence of this site, to me. And many of these creations come from newer members!! Speaking for all of us, but me especially, I am so glad you guys are here!!!

Any section on COW can get a bit stale from time to time, but you guys here in the Fedora section, keep it very interesting, and I can't wait each morning to see what else you guys have come up with. Keep on keeping on!! Fedora

Michael, thank you so much for your words. The hat is an Explorador, but after so many re-blocks and tweaks, I think is something else now.
Everytime I have the opportunity to travel on exotic destinations (and others) I wear my entire gear. Jacket this time was off, because of the 40º celsius in Egypt!
I never feel shame of beeing too "Indy" dress. People look at me sometime, but I just don't care....I'm too happy in my gear!!!

Holt, thanks! I already said, your Fed is the SOC hat!

And I'd like to absolutely agree with Fedora. The research, and all that study is the "soul" of this site. Looking pictures for hours, playing the movies on your DVD over and over again, making conclusions and deductions (sometimes right, sometimes wrong) and then SHARE everything here, with all. BIG THANKS to those who help keeping this spirit alive.

Well, finally I get my turn to offer up a few photos of my unique prize:
A newly made Rabbit Raiders Fedora in a Pre-Distressed "Streets of Cairo" Style from Penman Hat Co. Artist John Penman .

John did a wonderful job on this hat.
Fits like a dream and despite it's "weather-beaten good looks", it feels just as soft & smooth (with a little bit of grit here & there) as you would expect from a hat that John had just made.

If the first shot looks familiar to you it's likely because you saw a number of similar shots of it at different angles over in my "Wear My Penman: Higher or Lower? (Or: Too Much of My Mug!)" Thread here in the Fedora Forum.

I know it was hard for John to do that to a hat and then send it off to a client... he IS, after all, in the habit of making only beautifully crafted, gorgeous hats...

Beautiful hat and you wear it well. John did a great job, the crease suits you. Unmistakably SoC.

I love my rabbit hats, I've got more than I need really. But I don't use Fullers Earth because I like to wear them with a suit. Thats why I can't post my SoC hat. It wouldn't be an SoC without dust. I just like the way the rabbit felt suits the SoC bash and I feel like they get better with age if you wear them a lot. IMO they look more and more Indy the older they get.

I agree John DOES do great work. I can honestly say that he's not only a guy I enjoy doing business with... but I'm flat out A FAN of his, as well.
I want you to know that if I didn't already have my (reasonably) clean, beautiful brown Garrison Raider (for the few opportunities I get to look "dashing") I don't think I would've had the guts to ask John for THIS hat! I likely would've been asking him for one of his PERFECT brown Raiders-Style Penman Hats first. As it turned out, of course, I was lucky enough to ALREADY have LLS's Raiders hat on it's way to me when I first approached John. Better STILL was the fact that LLS's Garrison fedora wound up being a hat I loved as much as I did.

I've gotta tellya... it's a real pleasure anytime you give me the nod on a piece of my Indy Gear. I know what a discerning eye you have for a lot of the details that matter most to... well... someone like myself. So it's always appreciated whenever I get a "thumbs up" from you.

Ok my Fed Deluxe 4 is really starting to look more and more SA but I just won't put Fullers Earth on it. It has the bulge, the channel, the relaxed brim-break, the brim looks right now and I really want to post a picture of it. Would anyone mind considering there's no dust on it? Technically its not an SoC without the Fullers Darth but I'm so proud of my bash. Its the same hat in my avatar but i've really distressed it now.

I'd LOVE to see it!

And I've got a very specific reason for wanting to, as well:
I've got a Fed IV that I'm... (how shall I say this?)... intent on "leading down a distressing back-alley to the streets of Cairo"...

Now, I'm NO "hat-shaper/distresser" and can only look up in AWE to you guys who've posted your photos here in this thread... So, I hope it goes without sayin' that I'll be takin' this reeeeeeaaaaaal slow...

The very LAST step I intend to take is the application of the Fuller's Earth. So, I'd really like to see a SoC hat in it's "undusted" state, where we're just focusing on the actual shape, dimensions, warping and curling of the hat.

Snap, I'd really be interested in seeing this... please DO post these shots.

Don't worry about the dirt.
Mine is clean, but the bash is SOC (or at least some details of it

)

IMO is all about the bashing.
Off course a little of fullers earth, in the correct spots, will give you more screen accuracy, but then that hat becomes almost unwearable.

Please, let us see those pics.

In point of fact that IS Pankot Palace, or at least its ruins. Late last year I journeyed to India, into the dark and mostly unexplored interior. Train to Rajabad, from there by elephant across the Punjab River to Krischnalakot from which we had to proceed on foot three days to the base of the mountain upon which the palace once stood. The climb up would have been hard in the best of times but the ruins of the palace lay strung out down the sides of the height. Our exploration was threatened by snakes, a tiger even bandits. Then after having taken this ONE photo against one of the few standing walls... my guide, Ajala, dropped the camera rendering it inoperable! I had the above painting made in Islamabad by a street artist based on the one photo.
That night ... as I slept in my un-air conditioned hotel room, I was attacked by a Thuggee with a garrot and strangled to death!

I know, I know.. this thead is worthless without pics.
But I didn't resisted to share with you my happyness to own a new Indy fedora: is a Garrison Hatters Raiders SOC hat. Firts of all I have to say David is a great and very kind person, the talk with him was a pleasure and I think the work he did for me show perfectly how much he loves what he does.
The has is simply amazing, obviously ASAP I'll do a photoshoot with the hat to share it with you. But so far, let me say that I found Garrison Hatters a great choice for my SOC hat style, the felt is so soft and is a pleasure to wear, the look is perfect, brim, crown, and the distressing too, was beyond my imagination.
I'll post the pics to complete the review as well!

I'm already a fan of Garrison's fine work (and excellent service and attention to care and detail on behalf of his customers)... but there are FAR too few pictures of his Streets of Cairo Hats foating around!
