Do pocket sizes on the various Wings Indy jackets vary?
They all look different on the website photos. And if so which version has the smallest pockets?

Re: Do pocket sizes on the various Wings Indy jackets vary?
I believe the key is the jacket size. Bigger jackets get bigger pockets to avoid that awful size 50 jacket with mini-pockets look. For the photos, though, you also have to consider how color, lighting, and exact angle can trick the eye.
If you specifically want small pockets, Wings is not a good choice. If you want pockets that are proportionate to the size of the garment, then Wings is your best off-the-rack option.

Thanks Chewy,
I do prefer smaller pockets. It's just that each photo on Wings' site show a differnt size and flap shape. I thought maybe the Adventurer ones were smaller.

CM if you are thinking Indy jacket your only option for small pockets may be a ToD. They are about A-2 size, actually smaller even than some A-2s.
The Wings are fairly large.

Despite what the photos might suggest, I have found Wings jackets to be the most consistent in terms of details like pocket size and shape.
If the pocket issue puts you out of the Wings as an option, may I recommend a custom jacket from Magnoli or Todd? You could probably get whatever size pockets you want, along with other details, and since it's summer the wait wouldn't feel so bad. Both are stella gents, and make a heck of a jacket for just a little more than most of Wings jackets.

I was wondering if Wings scaled their pockets to size, good to know. Is it the same with their other jackets... like an A-2 for example?

I have an A-2 from US Wings and they are bigger than an A-2 from the past,if you look up old A-2's but smaller than an Indy jacket. I have both jackets. They look really good on the A-2 hope that helps.their horsehide jacket is a very good jacket, but there are no hand warmers,it's pure miltary.

Re: Do pocket sizes on the various Wings Indy jackets vary?
I have to back up jacksdad and say that their A-2 pockets are smaller than their Indy pockets. However, I don't know if they scale the pockets to jacket size. I do know that they don't look "too small" on a big jacket, though. If that's happens to be you specific concern, then you have nothing to worry about.Inbanana wrote:I was wondering if Wings scaled their pockets to size, good to know. Re: Do pocket sizes on the various Wings Indy jackets vary?
Thanks all. I like the Wings jackets milspec quality but not the big pockets. Not interested in the other makes (already have a G&B and Wested) just wanted a non SA beater in goat.
Re: Do pocket sizes on the various Wings Indy jackets vary?
Ya... that was my concern, I like the look of the smaller pockets, but unfortunately I'm not a size 40... so I want to try and avoid the look of pockets being disproportionate to the jacket. However I also get the argument that if you have two people the same height, and one is a size 40 and the other is a size 50... if you scaled up the pockets proportionately, does that mean that you would scale up the width only? But, if you scale height also, does it look like your pockets are almost coming up to your armpits? (Sorry, jacket OCD kicking in...) I guess thats why I like to start off with small pockets... (wonder if any other A-2 manufacturers scale thier pockets )Chewbacca Jones wrote:I have to back up jacksdad and say that their A-2 pockets are smaller than their Indy pockets. You know, that's an interesting thought. The issue is probably resolved somehow by making Tall and Regular sizes. In the end, though, buying off-the-rack requires a certain flexibility in how something will fit.
The A-2 design is generally a shorter jacket that kind of retreats up the body when unzipped. The pockets will seem rather high when the jacket is open if you're used to the placement on an Indy jacket. But that's just how A-2's are. A thinner build, even in a larger size, will have less of it, but with a gut like mine the pockets will creep up pretty high. The style works best on guys who have a narrower midsection than chest.
If you get a custom jacket, you might be able to the pocket beast, but Wings and G7B are probably your best off-the-rack choices.

I have an older US Wings jacket, and the pockets look smaller than alot I've seen lately, even though mine is a large. Are they using current photos of all their jackets? I see what you mean; the pockets on the cowhide and lambskin jackets look larger to me than the goatskin.

Re: Do pocket sizes on the various Wings Indy jackets vary?
There is a definite difference in pocket size from my old goat skin to my current cowhide. Not, I don't think Wings has changed photos in several years, but I haven't compared my goatskin with newer ones. I don't know this for sure, but maybe the Cowhide versions reflect a KotCS look?Weston wrote:I have an older US Wings jacket, and the pockets look smaller than alot I've seen lately, even though mine is a large. size Medium (which is more like others large)
Goat 7"x8.75"
Cowhide 7"x9"
I think the difference is just manufacturing tolerance

The difference on mine is a bit more dramatic. Is yours the regular Cowhide or the limited edition?RCSignals wrote: Goat 7"x8.75"

Old goat skin pockets; 6.5 x 8 including flap.
Collector Edition Cowhide; 7.5 x 9.25 including flap.
Both jackets are XXL. I think that the goatskin measurements would suggest a change in pattern between yours and mine.

Yes, Chewie. That's what it looks like form the old pictures. I much prefer that goat jacket size

Just curious, has anyone thought of dropping Sgt. Hack an email and asking if they scale their pockets to size? He's a member here, you know, and answers all his emails.
Rather than guessing, why not just ask the man?

If anyone did not read the information I posted in another thread (this seems important enough to re-note), US Wings offers a $100.00 discount to COW members on the Signature Series "Adventurer" jacket, and possibly a few others.

And it turned out to only be the limited Vintage version and the German Fighter jackets. Bummer, since I already have my limited vintage jacket.Max Chance wrote:If anyone did not read the information I posted in another thread (this seems important enough to re-note), US Wings offers a $100.00 discount to COW members on the Signature Series "Adventurer" jacket, and possibly a few others.
