Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
So, in LC we were introduced to a new bit of gear. Indy decided to wear a tie with his adventure gear.
Some have chalked it up to indy wanting to dress up for Elsa...but if you notice in Harrison Ford's appearance on Young Indiana Jones, he's wearing the tie also, with his sweater and gear.
Yet, in CS indy does not wear a tie at all with his gear.
So for some reason during the late 30s and through the 40s Indy just decided to wear a tie and the during the 50s said "nevermind"?
Anyone have any thoughts?

In all four movies Indy not wear any tie when use his gear. In LC he's wearing Elsa's tie and hat as a disguise to enter Castle Brunwald.
Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
Yep. You don't see him rocking the tie until they enter the castle, as far as I can remember.

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
I could be wrong, but Indy was wearing the tie in the car BEFORE he decided to wear Elsa's hat. And then he continues to wear the tie throughout the castle, throughout the car chase scenes, in Germany, in the zeppelin, and in the plane.
Why continue wearing the tie if it wasn't his....he didn't keep her hat on....why was she wearing a black tie?
He is only seen without the tie and his gear in the beginning of the movie, and from the scene with him, dad and Sallah in the car to the end of the movie. Other then that I could've sworn he that whenever he was wearing his gear, he had a tie on.
And again, in YIJ "Mystery of the Blues" Indy (played by Harrison Ford) is again wearing a tie with his gear which is set in 1950.
not to mention publicity shots with Ford wearing the tie.

My guess would be because essentially he's in "civilization" at that point. He's not in the jungle or in the desert, he's in Europe. He would have stood out without a tie in the 1930's. It was how you went out and did almost everything back then.
That's how I always looked at it anyway.

Yes, you're right! He wear the tie in the car. So...hum...I really don't know! Maybe that is the Indy's "elegant way" to use his gear during a trip through civilized countries...

Thats possible...but he's also toting a gun and a whip with a satchel...thats not common wear. In fact that would stand out more then not wearing a tie....lol.Travner Ravenweird wrote:My guess would be because essentially he's in "civilization" at that point. I don't know, I've always wondered but then I saw the pic of him wearing the tie in YIJ 1950.....while sporting long hair and a beard. Therefore it can't be too "fit in" as 1950, you didn't have a beard and long hair, less you were a beatnik....lol.
I just thought it was an interesting choice to wear a tie.....but then in CS 1957 he doesn't ever attempt a tie, although I suppose theres no point being in South America.

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
True. Gunbelt and whip could be shoved in the suitcase or under the car seat when you grabbed a bite to eat. The satchel worn under the jacket isn't imediately noticeable. A tie though was just standard attire unless you were a laborer of some sort (and in the process of working). I just figured it was something he shoved in his pocket just in case he had to hobnob with a certain class level of people. Like the bowtie and tweed jacket in TOD. Something he threw in the bag "just in case". They didn't provide it for him there at the palace before he dined with the maharaja obviously, there is not much use for tweed in India I don't think. But there would be places he wouldn't have been able to go in to without a tie, heck there are still places like that (though these days few and far between) and they have ties for you to borrow at the door before you go in. It would have been less of a hastle just to have one on.backstagejack wrote:Thats possible...but he's also toting a gun and a whip with a satchel...thats not common wear. Plus now that I think about it, a basic black tie would have been easily and inexpensively aquired back then too.
But to be honest I never noticed the tie in that MOB pic before, and I've only seen the episode the night it originally aired and then not the whole thing. I guess I don't have an answer for you there.

I just wondered, as since it only appears in LC and YIJ, if it had been some quirk of Lucas. "I want Indy to appear nicer." as he is know to do things like that (greedo shooting first). or maybe they just threw it into YIJ to make him connect more with the last time Indy had been seen which was in LC.
I donno. Just figured it merited some thought...as it is part of the gear I suppose...yet an often overlooked part.
Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
Nah, it's all because of Dad! He just knew, his "governor" would have reasons enough to lament, so he wanted at least to be dressed right.

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
See I agree, I feel that he was wearing a tie because he was going to see his dad, first of all. Secondly, his gear is very Officer in feel, so the tie just makes sense.
Hes not wearing a tie in CS because he spends most of the movie in a warmer climate. Colder climate like Germany, or Montana, he wears a tie. The time period hes from, you dont just button your shirt up to the top button and not have something dressy on, that would be like going out without your hat:)

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
I think that in OB, he had it on for reasons similar to LC (going to meet his Dad), in that, when he and his Native American friend recovered the relic, they would have taken it to one of the tribal leaders. Or, perhaps Gray Cloud was a tribal leader. Just my two cents

i'm gonna go with Travner and Jens on this one. he was in a more civilized area(though still prefered to random, clumsy blaster ) so he dressed more civilized ie. add a tie.

But if you're going to wear a whip, satchel and gun...why worry about looking civilized since in 1930 and 40s and heck even today walking around with that gear in a civilized area will get you all kinds of looks if not arrested.
Maybe it was because of his dad.....

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
Indy started wearing a tie because he found it could be used as a divining rod for finding water. Also, it was known to have acted as an inflatable life raft in times of dire need, or as a baseball bat when his whip or gun were out of reach. Subsequently, since it was black, it offered him nighttime stealth capabilities, keeping him out of view of his enemies. Since the tie was made of Irish poplin, it also granted him mystical drinking powers, enabling him to outdrink any adversary.
That, or the costumer wanted him to wear a tie. Personally, I like the first theory.

Hey, here's a question, does anyone happen to have a screen cap showing if Marion is wearing one of those during her drinking competition in Raiders? There might be a theme going on here...

maybe seeing as it was raining and therefore a much colder climate, he knew he'd need a few brandys and thought the drinking tie would come in handy.
Or possibly he was worried about being caught and without cyanide pills he could have used it as a noose if he wanted to end it all.

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
You know, all joking aside (well, maybe not all), wearing the tie due to a cooler climate makes sense. He had the tie in Venice to look nice with his suit, then trucked off to a rainy Austria. Given that his outfit was the same as his usual hot weather clothes, it's became a handy "scarf". The reason he wears it for most of the time he's in gear is because from the time he enters the castle until he reaches the book burning, he's basically on the run in a cold climate. Makes a perfect omlet, as I see it.

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
In 'polite society' during that time period, entry to most locations were barred if you did not have a suit coat and tie on. You can still find some restaurants like this today, but in those days it was considered socially proper to wear a coat and tie in public. Jackets were acceptable in place of a suit coat, but the tie was required.
Every place we see him with a tie seems to be in that 'required' situation, be it in a public location, or visiting a formal place like a castle.
It was the requirement of the era.
After the war, ex-soldiers rebelled against this type 'formal' requirement of tie and jacket in public, and that was pretty much the end of that general practice, with the exception of those who had this practice engrained in their personal 'dress code'.
I have seen photographs of my own grandfather and Dad sitting around at home reading the newspaper in shirt sleeves and tie with a jacket within reach, so it was even practiced at home where the general public never saw you....but there was that chance someone might come to the door, and therefore you had to be prepared to greet them looking your best.
MAN, how times have changed! We have a local walking park/path, and I've actually seen folks walking their dogs wearing their pajamas!!!!
Regards! Michaelson

Yes it's true, none of us lived thru times when it would have been socially unacceptable to wear a shirt without a tie. I do think it's either the weather or his father that inspired the tie. However I really do wish more people wore hats - most especially fedoras. So I propose we start a society who always wear their indy fedora and see if it catches on. Who's with me?

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
The other day, I got home from work (where I can't dress up), put on a pair of nice trousers and a button up shirt, slid on my indy straw and went to the local chilis to have a good dinner by myself. It felt great!
I've honestly seen some disgusting things at walmart.....and I can't understand how and why people would allow themselves to go outside like that. I honestly wish people still dressed up to go out, but rarely anyone does.
And you know what bothers me the most? At walmart......when people decide to wear full camo to walmart....they don't even wear matching camo!!!!! I mean COME ON!!! If you're going to be red neck AT LEAST match!!!!

I try to dress better these days, even with the warm weather I wear nice shirts, a pair of nice shorts, and if I wear jeans I wear a button down shirt and boots and I have my hat on. I guess getting older I feel like the days of dressing down in public are over, for me at least. Now when I cut the grass or work on the house, then it's back to the jeans and tee shirt look.

Hey man...I'm just sayin....lol. Not only to people dress down...way way down these days. They don't even have the good sense to match. I'm not try to be all metro about it but jeez at least match your camo.....maybe its my OCD but it bugs me to death that people wear different kinds of camo together.Travner Ravenweird wrote: Seriously! But I try to dress nice when I can. In this heat and without having an AC in my truck it gets kinda hard cuz I don't want to sweat horribly in my nice stuff and then get out and have pit stains etc....I need to invest in some more nice linen clothing as most of my good stuff doesn't breath well.

Don't think he has it in the opening boat scene in LC.
I think it was to make a visual connection back to him as a scout.

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
You're right, he wasn't wearing it during that scene. He has the tie only from the car scene at the start of the Castle sequence until they escape the germans completely after his dad destroys the german plane with the birds. And then in the YIJ MOB episode.ANZAC_1915 wrote:Don't think he has it in the opening boat scene in LC.

It makes sense that maybe he wanted to dress up for his dad.....but mixed in with the YIJ episode, it makes it more then just that...so possibly like someone suggested part of his cold weather gear.

So far as the long hair and beard goes in YIJ MOB.....it was during time Ford was filming 'The Fugitive'......

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
Most men wore ties in those days - pre-sixties. Check out the old movies. Cowboys wore scarves round their necks. Or string ties. But Indy as a wheathered, older may, in the fifties, may have just said to heck with it. Ties are good. And a black tie against the poplin khaki shirt enhances the military look, which fits Indy since he is a man of action.
Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
With the tie, I think Indy was trying to portray more of a civilized "Professor Jones out in the field" look moreso than Indiana Jones, treasure hunter.
Throughout the films, Indy tends to put on the sportcoat and tie when he is in professor mode.
In his gear, Indy was definitely expecting a fight as he was there to rescue his dad so he dressed for it. The tie was probably added as an after thought to tone down the adventureous look for the nazis and perhaps to impress Elsa.
I never understood the whole beret and scarf thing. I think the butler would have let them in if Indy had Elsa do the talking and just said their car broke down in the rain. Cold, wet, female in distress= entrance almost anywhere.

Well, 1) he was wearing Elsa's poncho rain coat, which covered up his whip and gun. That may have been a good reason for it. 2) I think GL and SS just wanted some more funny stuff to put in it. Come on, Harrison Ford doing Scottish?? That's funny j/kBrowncoat wrote:
I never understood the whole beret and scarf thing. I think the butler would have let them in if Indy had Elsa do the talking and just said their car broke down in the rain. Cold, wet, female in distress= entrance almost anywhere.

Don't forget, the Nazi's also knew who Indy was, so they were probably watching for him no doubt. (As it turns out, they were, but Indy didn't know that yet.)backstagejack wrote:Well, 1) he was wearing Elsa's poncho rain coat, which covered up his whip and gun. Good point, that also. Since they had Henry Sr., Indy knew that they knew they had his father...therefore in his mind, he knew they were probably looking for him.maboot38 wrote:backstagejack wrote:

And the name Indiana Jones was not a welcome one around Nazi HQ I bet....lol. Hitler outlawed the wearing of whips throughout Germany.

Re: Why did Indy start wearing a tie?
Doesn't anyone else think it's strange that there were no soldiers, just a butler guarding the castle. It would have been a push-over to break in, even without the sharade of a Scottish tapestry enthusiast. Seems kinda redundant keeping up the impression long after the realisation that the butler wasn't armed to the teeth. Seems a bit sloppy on the part of the Nazis who weren't exactly laid back to say the least! Anyone else think this is a bit strange?

They were trying to get the diary back. If they made it too forboding, Indy wouldn't have gone there, and they wouldn't have been able to get the diary from him.Snapbrim76 wrote:Doesn't anyone else think it's strange that there were no soldiers, just a butler guarding the castle.
