indy89,

That's a great looking hat. I really like the bash. I'm not sure if it's the bash or the actual brim width, but the brim on your Fed looks a lot wider than mine - I like yours much better.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding and that smart out fit.
I love my Fed with a suit too. In fact, I tend to wear it more with dress "gear" than adventure gear - heresy?

Anyway, well done sir!

Does anyone know if you can get the brim cut to a different size? 3" front and back. 2 1/2" on the sides, for instance?

Thats a pretty dramatic dimensional cut. If they can get you a three inch brim, I don't see why they wouldn't be able to. I just don't know if you can get a three inch brim.

I've always thought the brim on the Fed IV was somewhat stingy. This one from a 'competitor'... :-$ ;).....is 3" front to back, and 2 5/8 each side. Combine the dense felt and superior sweatband of the Fed IV with the look of this one from the competition, do some custom bow work, and behold!....you'd have fedora purgatory!

Well nearly two months later and I think the Fed IV's well worn in, as this shot from about two weeks ago shows. Never quite got the exact ROTLA pinch I wanted, but I still like it. Now, combine this with the hopefully imminent arrival of my Magnoli HJ and my graduation celebration will be all the more enjoyable...

I just got my Fed IV today, and I'm so excited! It came way faster than I expected, and it is such an awesome hat! On to pictures:

Just for fun....

And my first attempt at bashing a hat. I was going for a Raiders look, so any comments would be appreciated.

Wore my Fed IV to a graduation at a local university this morning. It was a good day for a fedora!
The best back handed comment I got was from an indie-rock hipster kid who told me she "liked my get-up".

I must admit - I did too.

That's a fantastic picture Bartram! The hat looks great, and it goes really well with the suit.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I'm rather pleased with how the bash came out myself :D I didn't use any steam for it. It was relatively pliable after a little working, so I got the bash how you see it after about 15 minutes of playing around with it.

It's rainy and dark outside at the moment, but once I can get some good lighting I'll put up some more angles.

A great hat & tie look, Bartram (Magnoli's Casablanca Tie, unless I'm very much mistaken... I'm not sure though, about the jacket... is that a Magnoli, too?)
:-k
Either way, great photo and great overall "look", Bartram.

Good eye Mitch! COW members don't miss a beat;)
The tie is indeed the Magnoli Casablanca. It has been a great piece that goes well with so many of my outfits but really matches this suit in particular! Excellent quality and craftsmanship all the way from him, no doubt.

As for the rest...
The suit is JCrew
Shirt is Gap
Belt is vintage

That's my university graduation gear this week.

It takes around 2 weeks MAX. But usually not that long. And if you get one now you will have plenty of time to break it in before Halloween.

Yeah; as I said in an earlier post, I never was able to get the Raiders pinch I wanted. Size 58 is my preference, but Size 59 would have been better suited to it. Still, TLC is my favorite Indy film so I'm not complaining... :)

My Carbon Grey Fed IV arrived earlier today....

Whoa! This is a nice hat. I really dig my Christy's Adventurer, because it's really starting to react very much like the Raiders hat. This one is an entirely different animal, but in a good way.

Quite pleased with this purchase!

Here's my carbon grey Fed I....no digital camera at the moment, so bear with the cellphone picture. It's a bad representation of the color of the hat, but a good shot of the bash. I was going for another "Generic Indy" style bash, this one with a little more Raiders in it....I think it turned out pretty good, only needed a tiny bit of steam to get the pinch to sit right.

Just ordered my dark brown Federation IV Delux (w. expedited shipping option) about 53 minutes ago, will post pics when it gets here of course.

A couple of Q's:

1. How does the felt feel compared to a PB, modern HJ, and the standard Federation?

2. If I do a non-steam bash, as shown here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bFsukCT ... re=related

Will it stay? I mean, after bashing it will I have to re-bash it, and if how often before it stays? I've never bashed any hat before, and if I can avoid using steam and get a bash that stays - even after re-bashing it a couple of times, that's cool.

3. Not a Q really, like to do things in threes... I look forward to bashing my new hat, but am nervous, please tell me I won't #### it up somehow...

Mate,

You can't muck it up, just go slowly, little bits of water at a time. The bash should take pretty well, the Fed is a great block shape for a generic Raiders bash (or LC).

Mine looks as good today as when I first bashed it. I can't comment on the other hats, however the felt is quite something (the next best thing to beaver).

Good luck and post 'em if you've got 'em.

Cheers

My Fed IV Deluxe (in dark brown) came yesterday, nobody was home so it went back to the post office where I picked it up today.

(If it weren't for that fact, it would have been exactly 3 days from order time to delivery.. ok, not exactly 3 days, subtract a few hours to about 2 and 6/8ths of a day. Still incredible from down under to the Northeast U.S)

At first I was apprehensive about bashing it - first because of the stiffness, second because I never ever bashed a hat before - then when I got around to lightly misting the hat with water, the process (thanks to the guide at http://adventure-realm.com/raidersbash.html) became more natural, and now I feel as if I could bash any hat.

I find that the cardboard thing that goes inside the hat when packaged for shipping makes a decent (and cheap) hat stand.

I followed that website above for a Raiders style bash, but don't know how raiders-ish it came out, what do you think? If not raiders, what movie style does this best follow in your opinion(s)?
