Gibson & Barnes Expedition arrives!

Post by Kevin Anderson »

I'm now the proud owner of a G&B Expedition in dark brown goatskin.
Ordered on the 27th of March, I was told it would take 3 to 4 days to make, since they were out of stock of my size (40R).
I won't pile on the praise too soon; I did that with my Westeds, and after spending some time with them, found them to
be fairly poor jackets.
I can offer my initial impressions though. Firstly, it arrived packed in a box, as a several hundred dollar jacket should, not a bag.
It feels solid, but not heavy. Very similar to one of my Wested lambskins actually. Smells like leather, pretty strong too.
The goat is very soft and grainy, but I can tell it will take quite some time to wear in. The collar in particular is quite stiff.
Stitching is superb. I didn't like the brass zipper at first, but it's growing on me. Pockets are big, flaps are nicely scalloped.
Perhaps most important to me; no squirrelage. The gussets actually work. I can zip the jacket up fully and raise my arms,
and the jacket barely raises, and I have no silly underarm 'wings'.
So fairly positive thus far. I won't post pics; it looks just like any other G&B Expedition.
It's certainly nice to have a real leather jacket again!

Enjoy it.

They soften up pretty fast if you roll them up in a ball and sit on them while watching TV.

You can also apply Pecards leather 'creme' (jell) as that helps leather relax.

It will become an old friend in short order.

So is the Expo available in "seal" brown and "dark" brown? I have seen pics of both but I don't see that info on the site....

I've heard there's a seal brown, but you're right, the website only lists the dark brown, which is what I ordered.
Rundquist could probably tell us more.

i for one would like to see a 'latest and greatest' expo so........

;0

no, i'm not trying to be difficult  .........i was actually entertaining the thought of getting one regardless of how 'close nuff' SA it is for my taste. i'm intrigued at this offering's heritage and the bulletproof construction. i'd like to see it if you have time to post pics :)

It is a fantastic jacket, I think if you search Rundquist had posted alot of pics of his various Expos, including ones in regular seal. I love my Aero FQHHs, but my Expo is right up there...

believe me, i've looked at rundquist's expos quite closely......but i'd like to see one that is right off the machines like KA's.

the jacket looks different on different people too. this offering has evaded my collection for a while now and i'm very curious about it.

Yeah, they had to make mine too ,when I ordered a couple years ago. It arrived within a week with a small printed tag attached that had my name right on it. Just like a custom job! I've used the @#$% out of my goatskin and it's still in fine condition!  You'll love it!

'See some sales'? They can't keep them on the racks as it is, so I don't think they're concerned about making sales. ;)

His is the dark brown goatskin (as is mine), and they are indeed bullet proof. The also make them in a seal brown that is closer to a vintage color, and I've read reports of them being dulled with a wipe down of alcohol (don't quote me though. I don't practice the 'black art' of artifical distressing. =; )

VERY nice looking jacket!

Thanks all for the compliments. I don't mean to hijack your thread KA!
IG &RC - That's right, 2 years old, hard to believe. I must admit the Expo looks pretty darn new in those pics.Their goat is tough! The Lambskin they sell may wear in quicker perhaps? I've worn it alot but don't abuse it either, and I don't believe in artificial distressing. There are plenty of methods for that, but on a $400 item? Yikes!!
PLATON -that's a size 38 tall. I'm 6 ft. 168lbs, but I got skinny shoulders. So I hit the size just right. (40 reg. is really the "recommended" size for my ht/wt)

My G&B is around 1 year old but looks much more broken in. I guess that's what happens when you put it through the washing machine on warm with lots of soap.

Mind you, I've always liked the look of a new jacket. The distressed look does not please everyone.

The one thing about G&B that I sometimes find hard to take is how heavy they are. Mine can only be worn part of the year here in Aust. It's as heavy as my cowhide jackets.

Me too! More pics, more pics.!

On a side note, what would happen it you changed out the zipper for a nickle one? (I know that they won't change anything on the jacket) Would that void their warranty or something? Anyone know?

I'm a big proponent of washing this jacket. I washed mine after a Pepsi accident (through it in with some jeans as I knew of the jacket's durability). Took off some of the shine and put some nice creases in. The best part was that it really popped out the grain of the goat.

Since they have a zipper replacement waranty, I'm sure it would void that. Don't know about the stitching warranty but it wouldn't help your cause any.

I too have thought about getting one and having the zipper replaced but that's part of the reason I went with a TN.

I did too, I even talked to my tailor about when I had him shorten the sleeves. If I have him replace the zipper, I think I'm going to have him run it right down to the bottom of the jacket. I got my G&B used, so I'm not too concerned about the warranty, or if it's even transerable...
