Is it a bad idea to store a bullwhip in a display case?
Hi all, I've been considering picking up something like this
to store one of my bullwhips in, and I was wondering if anybody would advise against doing so? I'm thinking of going with either a plexiglass or acryllic type of display case, but I was wondering if it might be bad for the bullwhip in the long run? And yes, I most likely will be taking it out once in a while to crack it, and Pecard it maybe once a year...
But otherwise, does anybody know if this would be a bad idea?

I think you'd be fine storing your whip in that fashion. You want to keep them
from extremes i.e. a closet/dampness or direct sunlight. As long as the display is
on a wall that doesn't sit in the sun all day, you've got an ideal and sharp looking
storage solution.

That is really a neat question,
I have always wondered about keeping them in a glass tiered display case. Seems like it would keep the dust off the whips, but I guess not as much as a heavy duty zipper case such as Bernardo's or Robby's types.

Castor, When it comes to long-term storage, Leather whips will do better when they are able to have air circulate around them. But displaying a bullwhip in a case like that should be fine, especially since your still going to take it out and used it once in a while. I know some folks with collectable or screen used film whips display them in a similar manner. Basically try to keep it out of direct sunlight and don’t coil it up too tight.
Allen, Your better off storing a whip in a glass display case then a whip bag/case.
Storing leather whips inside a whip bag for long periods, especially if your in an area with high humidity is never a good idea and over time can open up a whole bunch of problems with leather. A rosin bag, silica gel pack or even sock full of non-scented kitty litter can help with the moisture, but its still not the best way to store them.

Thanks Dan and SHoWhips, this really does help me quite a bit in making my decision! Direct sunlight shouldn't be a problem, and I agree that it should *hopefully* turn out looking rather sharp! I'm mainly doing this as I decided to find a better long-term displays for my gear that would be eye-catching, but also safe from the elements...BullWhipBorton wrote:Castor, When it comes to long-term storage, Leather whips will do better when they are able to have air circulate around them. I'll be sure not to coil them up too tightly, and Dan, air circulation really is a big concern for me as I don't really get a chance to use them as often as I'd like (last time I used them was probably back around June!!!). However, maybe I'll take them out of the case for a day or two every now and then to help aerate them, worst case scenario!

That right there shows that I need to reorganize my "priorities"
I told my wife I was not using the whips too much and that proves it!

Castor, I'd imagine you could get a plexiglass or acryllic type display case with ventilation holes, or "install" some yourself.

I crack my whip all the time in damp grass, but then I tumble it dry on a medium setting. It shrank some, but it sure keeps the mold from setting in...VP wrote:Same here, can't crack 'til the grass is dry.Castor Dioscuri wrote:(last time I used them was probably back around June!!!)
