That's... inconvenient... I just ordered and received the normal version for my father-in-law for a birthday present - would certainly have got the deluxe if I had known that there was one to be had in black...
You didn't bash it yet, did you? Maybe you can exchange it, but pay for all the freight?

How do you get the top of the front pinch to sway back like that?

Can we see some pics of the side profile of the hat (preferably on you)? It looks like the hat might slant back too far where the front pinch is, but then again it may just be the abgle of the picture.

I posted a few pictures last week of the Fed IV Deluxe my wife got me for Christmas, but it was just sitting on its The Hattery box it was shipped in. The USPS didn't feel it necessary to "pre-bash" mine a la RaiderZee's. Here a few shots of it actually on me to get a better perspective on the hat's bash.

As I indicated on a prior post, I wasn't going for any specific movie's bash. I just wanted to give it that Indy feel. Cheers.

:o Holy side dents batman! So that's how you got the front to swoop back like that. Not entirely SA, but still looks good on you.

Nice hat. Nice bash. If you let your boy wear it, he won't give it back. I know cuz my boy loves to wear my hat.

Can't wait to get mine. Ordered on Dec. 23rd, still don't have it yet. Deb emailed me and said that although they shipped it out the next day, due to the Holidays, nothing probably left Australia until Jan 4th or 5th.

So I am to wait until mid next week and if nothing happens, then email Hatsdirect again. Of course, Monday here in the USA is a federal holiday, so "mid next week" = "next Friday".

EDIT: Super Sleuth, did you turn that hat?

Heh, strange thing, my son refuses to wear my hat, he just kinda smiles at me and say - naah, it is your hat. He loves his summer panama, he dont care about SA at the moment.

I've been a lurker on the boards for some time, and based on this forum ordered a Fed IV a few weeks ago.

Hey - JKD - any sign of your Fed this weekend? I believe ours were shipped at about the same time.

Not yet. Of course yesterday was a Federal Holiday. I hope she shows up today.

I told the Mrs. to NOT call me if it comes in. I'd rather it be a surprise. I'm looking forward to comparing the felt grades. A lot of folks say the delux is worth it and has better felt. We'll see.

And then you'll all see as I promise to post pics.

It came in yesterday.

Observations: STIFF! Like I dipped a pair of Levi's in water and left them outside in the 9 degree weather for a day or two. I bought a Delux. The felt is BEAUTIFUL! The color is better than the Fed III.
Had to use some steam to coax it since it was so stiff.

I have some work to do on the bash and on the brim.
Any suggestions? (note, the photos above are before I steamed it).

I've own a Fed Delux III for about 5 years now. I've hated it because the bash among many other things. I was rather inexperienced with bashing and didn't know the technicalities of bashing such as what made a Raiders hat look good or how excess amounts of steam and water are bad.
But...jmacpix and jkdbuck76, those bashes look really good. Both suit your both very well. It almost makes me want to buy another Fed in the future and now knowing what I know, bash it and be 10x more happier with it then what I am with my current Fed.

There's some other photos around here as well that have great bashes.

I really love how individualized these hats are. I mean, we've all get FedIV's, but each one is really different.

After a few weeks of wearing, my hat is softening up, I've worked on the bash some more to where I like it.

BTW, why did you move to Finland?

It just shows how versatile the fed 4 can be.

I moved to Finland because it is where my wife lives. We met online, and after talking for a few months I came over here to visit in summer of 2007, and have been here ever since. Couldn't be happier :)

Okay!!!

Just got my Federation in the mail. I decided to take a shot at something other than Raiders, judging from the posts on this thread ( and there are some really good ones !!!) I went with a CS type crease.
So here are some pics, but I need to know, before it settles too long, how is it? Particularly the side dents; do they go back far enough? Any input will be great, as this will be front line Indy until I replace another hat I recently abused. Thanks in advance.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj29 ... G_0846.jpg

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj29 ... G_0847.jpg
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj29 ... G_0848.jpg

The first thing I noticed about this hat is, it's a definate step up from but my Squatter and AkAd DM in terms of a smooth appearance. Secondly, it's MUCH stiffer than both. I look forward to the creases settling so I can start the process of softening it up.

Again, thanks for any help/input.[/url]

Kiltie,

I reckon you have done a great job on the hat and have done it and the CS bash justice. I recall that Ford's hat had a pronounced brim curl at the rear (in KOTCS) which I am not super keen on, however it does add a difference to the hat which is what differentiates all of the Indy hats.

Did you get the Deluxe or Reg?

Keep bashing :)

I reblocked my AkAd which I will post here one day - I was quite happy with the final look. It still remains a great serviceable field hat!

Cheers

Wait Time?

Post by Bartram »

Hey everyone who has received their Fed's in the last month, how long did you wait from the day they shipped to the day it arrived?

I'm in the US and tomorrow is 14 days from when Hat's Direct said they shipped it. Is this par for the course for international shipping?

Yours in all my impatience,
B

Thanks, Jones Boy! This is a Standard, but the felt has a much finer appearance than the two Akubras ( Adventurer and Squatter ) I received from David Morgan a little more than a year ago. Not nearly as soft, but much finer looking. I don't know if it's a change in the Imperial felt line, or just the difference in the Hatsdirect line, or what. Each has it's perks...

Bertram,
The exchange rate being what it is, I paid for the ultra-mega fast shipping and got mine in three days, not counting Sunday.

A word of caution:
I remember early on the fit of these things being in question. I ordered a 58, my usual size, and this thing is SNUG! I'm almost certain I'll have to go a 59 in a few months. Unfortunately, I was so excited about having it that I shaped it before fully digesting any future wear issues. I've had it on, off and on, for about four hours, around the house. No change as of yet. Tomorrow, it's going on the rack. If you're snug in your regular hat size, order up!

Bartram,

I too am 14 days waiting for my Fed 4 DLX (Moonstone). I e-mailed Jenny today, and she said USPS is a little slow right now. Hopefully our wait is not much longer. I just started my four months of wearing a suit to work and needed a Fed to go with my blue, grey, and black suits.

So I was wondering, is there really that much difference between the regular Fed IV and the Deluxe? It's going to be a few more months before my Camptown is wearable and my gray fedora is, well, I'm not super happy with it so I am considering getting a fed IV in the mean time.

Oh Yeah!

Post by Bartram »

Here are some pics of my new Fed Dlx. As I indicated before, I am so pleased with this hat thus far.

I went for a Raider's-esque bash with a slight turn, but I feel like the stiffness of the felt on the deluxe is wreaking havoc with my brim. I couldn't get it to stay "snapped" down until I used a little steam, but now I can't tell if it has a strange wave in it. Que Cera. Do these things find their way and settle in so to speak or do I keep working at it?

Also, on the Raiders hat I've notice some guys have a really pronounced down turn on their front brim. Is that necessary and if so, how does one get it?

Any way, all here's what I've got after one try this morning. I decided the wear it dressed up, a la the Venice pier.

Best,
B

My Fed 4 DLX Moonstone just came in. Since this is my fourth Fedora, I am really thinking about just bringing the front brim down and leaving it open crowned. Anybody else pretty much leave a Fed untouched?
