Whips - Whips and more Whips

Post by debi duke »

How many whips do you own????

I'm not sure how many we have....

I would guess maybe 15 or so......

I want Robert to make me a special whip.... But I'll have to wait a long time to get one made.....

Maybe I should get someone else to make me one.... The bad thing about that is I would have to pay for it.... :( lol

An 8 foot Tim Bass nylon and one of Kyle's (The Edge) pocket bullwhips. But I am thinking about adding a 10ft Stenhouse b/c I want a variety and I love his work. I just have save some moola b/c the Expedition is so expensive (but worth it). :whip:

I've got an 8' Mike Murphy bullwhip, a pocket bull (#10), and am currently working on making my first whip ...a snakewhip similar to the one PropReplicator (Wayne) made.

1; an Indy 14 footer  from a whipmaker in Colorado. Don't bother PMing me about getting it either. :) I'm still in the market for a good 8ft Indy to trade for some props... :-k

Kind regards,
Indy

P.S. If anyone's got a spare popper they could send me, my 14 footer is popper-less.

Lemme see:

Stockwhips - 5
Cowwhips - 2
Nylon Bull - 1
Aussie Bulls - 4
Long Handled Target whip - 1
Indy Style - 2
Mini Indy - 2
Texas Bullwhip - 1 (bought 1 to see what it was)
Hungarian whip - 1 like in Grant's book
Signal and Snakewhips - 2
Misc whips - 3 (old handmade whips)

Looks like about 24

That doesn't count the ones that I am making for customers - those aren't really mine unless I don't get paid for them. (Never have been stiffed by a non-paying customer) I am putting a mini Indy and a dark tan 7' Indy up on Ebay this weekend. Time to move some out the door. The 7' Indy has only been used a little - used it in Dallas this past weekend to win 2nd place in the Zorro board precision contest. And ITG cracked it a little bit too. So that is about the extent other than some cracking in the back yard to get it set and see where it falls.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

And I must say that 7 footer had a good feel to it when I cracked it. If you're looking for a bullwhip, this is a good one.

I bought a whip from them quite some time ago, a 10' 6 plait leather swivel. Not a bad whip, except for the fall they have on those whips. I chopped it off and put on an Aussie style white hide fall~ first whip maintenance I had ever done. That thing has taken a beatin'. At least now I know 1 other person who's bought one from them :D .

At current count, we have (my other half and I) 16 whips from various makers, the oldest of which (a restoration project) is over 100 years old, dating from the Boer War.

There's a fella not far from us, who owned over 50 whips last time I spoke to him.

I've currently got 6, but I've worn out about 6 or 7 more over the years. They were $15 Mexican whips that I would pick up every time we drove over to Juarez. Now I have a 10' David Morgan, and I haven't touched one of the others since.

I've got three.

a 10' four plait Meskin bullwhip.
an 8' eight plait swivel handle bullwhip.
and a really beautiful twelve plait 6' blue nylon Dittmer snakewhip (I think it's about 6' anyway).

Mr. Dittmer has started work on a brown nylon bullwhip for me.

I really like the nylon ones; you can use them where you wouldn't want to take a leather one and the play in them is amazing.

I used to date a Spanish speaking girl who called herself a Meskin. Her parents were from Mesko and her brother lived in New Mesko.

I learned my geography from an American textbook, like this:

Maybe she meant Mexican...

Here's a pic of my whip collection

From top left:

Vintage NOS Bucheimer bullwhip
Simon Martin 16x20 plait 7 ft stockwhip
10 ft Morgan bullwhip

Next row down:
Drew Schrag bullwhip, a 'woodie'
pair of Russell Schultz bullwhips
David Morgan 8 ft bullwhip
Pair of 16x24 plait Fraser stockwhips
Pair of 4 ft 8 plait Fraser stockwhips

Lying down on the couch:
22 ft nylon cow whip
pair of whitehide Fraser stockwhips
pair of nylon cow whips by Chris Hall
another pair of Hall nylon cow whips
Stenhouse-Winrich Indy bullwhip
pair of Murphy stockwhips, 12-plait 5 ft.

Including my pair of fire whips (not pictured) I think that comes to 23 whips. Most all of these whips I've gotten in the past year. Part of me thinks of getting a whip by Joe Strain, but then again, maybe I've got enough whips already

Nice looking collection, Adam. Tell me, is that Bucheimer whip in its original condition, or did you have to do any repairs yourself? It looks to be in incredible condition!

Impressive collection Adam, thanks for posting the picture. The Simon Martin and 16x24 Fraser stockwhips especially stand out to my eye, but they are all very fine whips. I get the feeling you have more whips that you've made and kept for yourself though  right. All the Best.

Hey everybody,

I was talking to janine the other day, and here are some pics that she sent me of adams new whips. Truely gorgeous!!! I figured I'd share them with everyone here.

I think I finally have figured out how to post photos, I hope. So here goes,

IT WORKED!!!

I'm so excited that I can post pics now, I just found this pic that was taken when Chris Camp and I met up before the WWAC in april. We put all 36 of our whips together and here is what it looked like:

Image

Also, note chris's foot, Aldens I believe, to the left of the photo.

There are 11 Joe Strain whips

6 Janine Fraser whips

2 David Morgan Whips

4 Paul Nolan whips

1 Peter Jack Whip

1 Si Davey whip

1 Terry Jacka whip

1 RM Williams whip

2 Maurice Doohan whips

1 Russel Schultze whip

and 6 Mike Murphy whips

I always liked the look of this picture, and it was taken April 1st 2005.

Two cowhides, 2 12x24s, and 1 16x16 whip?

Actually, I only count 35 whips in that picture, not 36.

The ones I'm having trouble finding are Paul's 4th whip and Janine's 6th.

I can figure out which whips are whose, except for the black signal whip, but that might be Paul's fourth, if he made it, but I don't remember seeing it in Oklahoma.

I know Janine has made signal whips before, but the black signal whip doesn't look like the one that I've seen.

As far as 36 whips go, I actually think that you forgot to put one of Chris's whips in the shot. I know he has two pair of short Strain bullwhips, like 4 ft and 3 ft, and of those, you're missing one whip from one of the pairs. So you guys did have 36 whips in Oklahoma, just not not in the picture.

I count 16 bullwhips, 17 stockwhips, and 2 signal whips, which adds up to 35 whips.
