Interesting Hat Behind the Scenes

Post by Local Land Surveyor »

These grabs are from the making of Temple of Doom. Harrison is talking to Ke Huy Quan about working the whip. A kid walks in behind Harrison as he talks. That hat caught my eye. Notice some of the charateristic of the hat. When I saw this hat, I thought "that sure does look like a Raiders Hat". Does anyone have any info as to who this kid might be, or any knowledge about the hat he is wearing?

Note the dents at the rear of the hat.

With this hat being in the same frame as the Temple hat, it make me take notice of the difference of the two. Very interesting.

too bad we did not get a straight on shot of this hat.....i just don't trust screen grabs anymore from my tenure in the leather jacket section. i do notice the lack of flanging on the brim which is prominent in TOD hats.......not so much in raiders hats unless we are in the flying wing scene....but that hat was beat to ####.

could be one of eddie barons.......then they can claim that their hats were in TOD.........the making of.......

I'm with G on this one. It's hard to trust screen grabs of this kind.

I did see this pics before trying to guess the crown height of the TOD hat. Can you tell if the crown heights are different.

I'd doubt it to be Terry Leonard. Looks too young. My guess is with the way he's dressed that he's probably the Stand-In for Ford. The person who stands around "as Indy" when the crew is setting up lighting and such so they know how it'll look when Ford comes in to do the scene.

Looks like the stand-in guy had a better bash than Indy himself

Hey BendingOak,
I'll check to see about a crown height. Not sure how accurate it will be. TOD measures in the work. ;-)

Hey Erri,
I couldn't agree more on that one.

The pics are more about if there has been any inquiry about this hat before. If he is the stand in, my question is still the same. What is that hat? It obviously is not the same type hat Harrison has on. Block, brim length, bash and all.
Very interesting

I believe it's the same thing, just different bash and probably the stand-in guy's hat was much less used so that it appears almost new compared to Harrison's hat... and in general, different looking . Just a wild guess.

Other people previously pointed out how often ToD hat looks remarkably similar to the Raiders hat, when not the same. If that was the case I believe that the costum designer was much less caring of its look while perhaps in Raiders when the hats got ruined (tapered etc) they probably adoperated any possible tricks to fix them, otherwise throw them away. I don't believe that hats in '81 were made of untaperable magic material while in 84 the felt was so bad that it would taper imediately. Even if the quality decreased, I believe in Raiders there was simply much more care about the look. Dear old Nadoolman why didn't she look after the sequels too??

Simply put, because she blew it with Stephen during the filming of Raiders in how she handled the costuming contracts.

Well it was a sort of retoric question but thanks for reminding me the reason :P

To my eye ( and don't everyone at ounce drive over me) the TOD and LC hats changes it's look right before my eyes. I see so many different hats in both those movie's.

Oh there's not much doubt for me that you're absolutely right. I've not paid as much attention to the LC hat as I have to the Temple but the Temple fedora seems to change from scene to scene.

Dramatically so, in some cases.

What's striking is the the way the felt is caved in spots and bulges directly over the top of the ribbon- That's what the Raiders felt did. What Ford's hat isn't doing at all.

Yeah...that does look like Terry Leonard. Only younger....

Where'd you get those shots? I have that particular segment on video somewhere....I'm positive. Of course, so do you (?).

These pics have been around for some time. I saw a couple of them on Canyon's site.

As for the caved in spot. There is a small one on Indy hat near the top.
