I solved that problem by wearing my JCrew Deckers - they're like 405's with tread!

Dick's Sporting Goods also carries these slip ons called Yak Trax and those will work on any shoe.

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/produ ... tId=848788

With those things on you can actually run across and icy parking lot without falling.

So, I think the whole issue of the Alden's being to slick to wear in certain conditions is pretty much resovled. I'd own some now if I could afford them.....I'll probably go for Todd's boots once he gets my size. 8)

YakTrax are the best. Inexpensive, effective, easy to put onto a variety of styles of shoes, and I think they look better than the Cabela's. There are two models, I think. And you can find them in lots of places, not just Dick's.

This morning we had a thin layer of ice on everything here in Quincy, MA. I stepped off the porch and literally surfed 10 feet down to the sidewalk.

Next time, I'll be ready...

Does anyone who lives with winter ice and snow have a pair of AF 64 boots to compare? I wonder how they would hold up to those conditions.

I have never seen or heard of an "AF 64", but here is the boot I swear by:

Image

It is the L.L. Bean Cresta. If you are looking for a boot that will allow you to go anywhere, an all around bang up, kick around, beat you up and spit you out, kick-butt and take names boot, this is it!

Learn it. Live it.

Of course, I still enjoy slipping around in my Aldens from time to time.

The Alden AF64 is a unique offering from Alden of Carmel. They used to market it as "the boot Indy wished he wore". Oil tanned leather with a lug type sole.

i have/had them......got them resoled to get those ugly lugs off....i didn't care much for them and it really took away from the indy feel of 405's. in all honesty, i didn't do enough with them on snow to tell the difference between that and the standard 405's........then again, i walk on ice and snow daily with treadless boots so i've aclimatized to it.

i believe indyblues also has a pair.......you may want to PM him and see if he's been running around the white stuff lately.

Ha, I recently had my Aldens resoled because the orignals split. Got 'em with vibram treads. Not so all-weather looking like those, but a tread, all the same. I guess I should post pics some time.

I have the AF64 and they work perfect on snow and ice. Very robust, but also comfortable boots.

do you find them a hair looser than the standard 405's? i think these were meant to be worn with wool socks or something as the fit is not as perfect as my other 405's.

Yes, a bit looser. That's right. But in my case the AF64 fits better than my standard 405.
I have to add, that the AF64 stains on the heel side. So if you put on white or bright socks, they get a bit coloured.

I'm glad I live in an area where there isn't any slippery ice. 8)

Oh Tinfoil, you beat me to it. Nice one.

I couldn't imagine winter without ice. Guess I'll never move outside New England.

Another coating expected tonight as a matter of fact. Bring it on!

No School! LOL.

I'm really hoping for it.

6 inches of snow and then freezing rain. No Alden here!

I think we're getting the Northern edge of that one right now - calling for @10 cents followed by ice pellets & freezing rain.

Back on topic, I have a set of those traction boosters and they make a HUGE difference! Kinda like the studded tires we can't get here anymore. :(

I do have a pair of the Alden AF64's, and I love them. I can't help with this thread yet, as we haven't really had any snow yet. We had an ice storm last night, but by morning, it turned to rain and melted everything.
I'm not complaining.
I will, however, post again in this thread after giving them a thorough test in the snow, when we finally get some.
