I have a Fed 4 regular size 59 and the crown seems high
If I move down a size to 58, will the entire hat be smaller - i.e., shorter crown?
thanks
Here are pics of me in the hat, I took the bash out....is it just be or does it seem big on me? Or maybe my face is tiny....I also think it looks taller with the bash in

I think the FIV's are more consistent in crown height than the 3's. That's what I hear, anyway.
If the hat looks to tall, you may just need to get used to it. Also, try to get the front, where the pinch is, to also have a sharper "v" look from straight-on. It's amazing what that can do.
As for touching the top of the hat with you head... that's not uncommon. If it bugs you, don't make the dent so deep. Going up a size will probably just mean that the top of your head is going to be all that holds up your hat!

I concur. If anything, I would think one should go one size smaller so that the hat rests a bit higher on your head.
I looked at the pictures, and the proportions look about right. A tall crown generally needs a long face, which you have. I think you just need to get used to it.
However, your thin build might make it seem larger to you. Throw on a light jacket and look again. It might not seem as big to you then.
I agree with CJ, that the specs look right for you. the first shot it may look a little big but I think it's the shot. Lets see some shots with the bash in the hat.
tighten the pinch at the very top just a bit -the crown looks good on you, though. Wear it around a while and you'll realize it too. It really does just take some getting used to seeing yourself with it on. As we look at your pics with it on, we have no prior knowledge of your face without the hat, so we can judge proportions, fit, etc without bias.
When I first wore a tall crown I thought I looked like the Man in the Yellow Hat from Curious George. Now anything shorter than at least 5- 5 1/2" range looks goofy to me.
The last two pictures look good. As for the bash, stick around here and you'll pick up many good tips on bashing it to make it YOUR hat.
I have to say that it takes time to feel comfortable in any change of style. Especially when that style is not one most of the population wears. First few times I wore a tall crown fedora with that wide brim I felt like the Flying Nun. I had a small case of nerves crossing the doorway wearing my fedora. Decided to wear it on a day trip to Delaware where I had no where to put the hat but on my head.
At first I noticed every glance my way but as the day went on, and I had other things on my mind, I stopped.
Each day after that the nerves lasted shorter and shorter. Now I wear it most days and I'm getting another for more formal occasions.
That hat suits you well, Gunk.
I would not do anything yet. Wear it around a while, get used to it, move into it. At first, it's going to look very tall, very awkward, but it's just because you're not used to it. Soon, you'll wonder why it had ever looked funny to you.
Looking at the photo, I think it looks amazing.
I would also hold off on styling it. It you put a tight front pinch in, it's tough to take out if you decide you want a different style.
Bottom line, from my perspective, move in, get used to it, own it for a while before making big changes.

I agree with the other posters, this hat looks good on you in the majority of the pictures. I purchased a Fed IV about a month ago, and it took some time to get used to the tall crown, and like Kokipelli, I felt like I was wearing a huge hat...but that feeling didn't last.
your face is a bit on the tiny side but otherwise it looks fine
it's supposed to be tall
I was like WHOA this looks big at first too but got used to it
I would just add that if you are unable to adjust to the tall crown, you could substitute another type of crease in order to lower the top. You can easily reduce an inch, even more, with a teardrop/C-crown or diamond crown.
Yes, it would not be a "Indy hat", then, but if it works in making you feeling more comfortable wearing it, I think this is preferable to you leaving the hat at home.
I think if you had someone take a couple of shots of you out side with good lighting , you would like the look better. Holding a camera at arms length inside of the bathroom is not going to be so great of getting what you and your hat really looks like.
When i first got my Peter Bros i thought it was way too tall, and it is a bit taller than my Fed IV, but i was so used to seeing the little four and four and a quarter crowns on my head it looked like i was wearing a top hat when i put that PB on. Now i put on my smaller crowned hats and they look weird, even wrong, and i hate the taper in some of them.
The short and sweet is i got used to it, and now its comfortable to wear at all times, even in my car.
