Andreas Dometakis

Post by ReturningSon »

Hello to All

I have always been on the quest for the Indy shirt. Since the original was designed and created by Andreas Dometakis, I sought to contact him. Being in the US, presented some problems. I called but he never picked up (done it 5 times) and since their was no email, I sent him a letter with still, no response. Curious, but do any of our fellow members live near Dometakis shop? Furthermore, Do any of our members have Dometakis shirts they would like to snap some pics of? And, the million dollar question, does anyone want to order me a shirt? :)

Although I can't speak from personal experience, I recall he wasn't all too friendly or enthusiastic a guy and wasn't thrilled about discussing gear.

Yeah, I guess he could have been employed at BN but I just figure he has a shop, he anyone ever walked in there and ordered an Indy shirt from him? It would be awesome if we could do something like Marc with Alden, maybe get Dometakis to make 50 shirts or something...

Darn, I had few days work in Great Portland St. not so long ago, I ended up wandering over to Belstaff at lunchtime. Should have gone to Domtakis!

Ok, next time I'm over there, I will wander in, thick skin required I suspect! :)

This is correct.

And the main reason by my record-holding eleven year wait for a piece of gear that never manifested.

I got a Dometakis-made shirt s few years ago as someone was selling them through the classifieds. The fit is great, but the material and buttons were all wrong. When I brought this up to the seller, he stated something along the lines of "yeah, AD doesn't really care what materials he uses, he works with what's available, but gets the patterns to spec." Wish he would've let that fact known before the sale.

I didn't know he still had a shop! Wow, it would be funny to walk in casually with a Noel Howard shirt on. I guess I'm going to do it next time I'm in London

Mike, apparently you weren't the only one to have "difficulties" with this person... also Noel had some issues back in the 80's :P

Well, after all I think it's still a good collection piece, a shirt made by AD.

MacGuyver(I think it was) was selling one of his AD shirts in the bazaar a couple/few weeks ago but the post is now gone. He's the only one I remember ever having one.

Not saying its not. In fact, I was wearing it today as it's a warmer shirt and we had frost on the ground this am. Just wasn't what I'd hoped it be.

When I first got gear in 89-90 from Lee keppler he was offering shirt and pants by someone who worked on the film. I think it might have been AD. The wait went on for years. I was still in contact with Lee when I got back from Florida in 99 and still NOTHING. I basically ended up writing it off as a loss in the last ten years. Ended up getting MBA shirt and pants in 2000. Wonder if I can bother Lee and see if anything came of it and I can get my money back? Wonder if Lee would still remember after all these years?

You know I'm crazy enough

I'm surprised that you are not getting a refund people, it sounds like Dometakis is running a pretty fraudolent business

To everyone reading this thread: PLEASE DON'T take the above quote as bashing Lee in any way. He is an UPSTANDING guy and got some of us our first authentic as possible gear before anyone knew what any of it actually was. I have the utmost RESPECT for Lee. My problem is with the vendor who was suppossed to supply Lee the clothes. It's all water under the bridge NOW. I've upgraded to SA size gear since then, but wouldn't change anything as far as my experience and enjoyment of my original gear.

Scott :)

Yes, I was the one who had and still has actual Dometakis shirts. To clear this issue up for everyone, here are some tidbits.

I used to pick them up in person while in London, but only after a significant wait (some were 2 years), but he was always gracious. The thing about him was that he impressed to me that he will not be rushed by anyone, and to him patience was a real virtue. He is/was extremely busy with order for other motion pictures, plays, celebrities, etc., so yes, I would say small orders for Indy shirts are not priorities for him. Don't want to speak for him, but that was my impression.

Just like any other vendor, it's not his bread and butter, so I don't blame him for putting off orders, But he did tell me back then that some people have been waiting years and still he has not had the time to finish the shirts, which I agree is a bit much. But, that's just the way he operates.

I was fortunate as I met him a number of times, and was introduced through my British friend who knew him even better. He's a great, kind man. Gave us a soda, took a few hours to talk to us about the shirt's details, and showed us artists renderings he was given back in 81 for the shirt from the costume designer. Say what you want, but it is *his* shirt.
he made them for Raiders, probably the rest as well.

I have a few of his shirts left, but decided against selling them. Unless you want to spend probably $300 each and wait a few years, the Todd's or AB are just as accurate.

That sounds like just about every Greek person I know. I guess it's a cultural thing.

No wonder he never gets any shirts done...
