i actually tried using that tutorial but when i go to pinch the center i don't get the v shape

What kind of ribbon are you using?
It's very hard to do with the generic 100% polyester stuff you buy in most stores.

Also, just pinching it doesn't automatically give you the shape.
You need to work it just a bit.
The pinch just starts it.
