New Whip! What do you think?

Post by MustangLoverMex »

Hello COW'ers!
I bought this whip a few days ago.
It's 8 ft 8-plait cowhide made in Mexico. (at the end is a 4-plait)
It remembers me to the "Official" Indy 10 ft and cost me about $35 USD!
By this moment i can do the Cattleman's Crack and i'm practicing the Overhead crack.
Btw I asked the seller that sold me this, to make me an SA Indy whip, i'm still waiting for his answer.
What do you think?

Reminds me of a whip I bought many many years ago in Juarez.
I still have it- it's not the highlight of my collection, but it does mark the very beginning of my fascination with whips.

it looks alot better than the mexican bullwhip i got to play with before my delcarpio whip showed up....that swivel handle piece of junk.

yours looks like it has a nice weight and progression in the thong, something mine was lacking and because of it, i could probably get better cracks off with a wet towel.

your whip looks like it'd be fun to play with

Looks to me like it should be a good functional whip. It has a nice taper to it.

Not a bad starter whip and way better than the most ofet seen whips on Ebay that's for sure.

It looks heavy and the taper isn't bad at all, though a bit big toward the tip (but that's just my personal taste). Not sure what's inside though. If it's strips of leather then it's close to what bullwhips used to be like in the old west, but if it's string or rope, you will know it because it will feel very light. How is the balance on the handle? Meaning if you put a finger under the whip, where does it balance? Near the ring knot at the end of the handle or further down the thong? The fall hitch looks well-made and the fall seems alright too.

The strands are a bit narrow as they leave the handle in regards to the width of the thong at that point, which tells me that this is not an extremely meticulous whipmaker, but it's not the end of the world since there isn't a huge amount of flexion at that point of the whip. You may find the thong bending sharply at that transition zone once the whip is broken in. But for the price you paid for it, that is not half bad.

Please let us know how it behaves with time.

A very nice whip, Alfonso! It has a very nice taper compared to other Mexican whips I have owned / seen. It has a very peculiar material. It seems redhide to me, and I had never seen a Mexican whip made with redhide, only rawhide.

A good starter whip indeed. Lets see if that guy will make you that SA raiders. It'll be interesting to see if he pulls it off.
