Last Crusade Whip

Post by Mal »

I originally got into the game, for lack of a better word, to collect only the bag, strap, and jacket. Months of spending time amongst this community has inspired me to assemble the rest of the outfit. As such, I thought I'd start with one of the pricier pieces of gear and ask a simple question that I can't seem to find a precise answer to:

If I were looking for THE Last Crusade Whip, as in not a close enough or on a budget, but the same make/color, etc. which whip would it be?

As I understand it, David Morgan did the whips for the films - so what are the specifics I would need to look/ask for in a Last Crusade whip by DM ?

As other s here can attest, DM doesn't make his whips anymore, but his younger family members do. This is not to say the quality isn't good or anything, but given that DM whips are in the upper end of the price range because of the name, it may make better sense to look at some of the other vendors listed on this site.

Somehow or another I have yet to see a coloration or dye job done that truly feels like a whip from the film - save for the 89' and 90's Morgans found in this part of the gear forums by senior members.

Del Carpio's do not seem to have the right color to them - is that a perspective/lighting thing or are his whips accurate in specs but not in dye?

Del Caprio has lighter then in the movie, cause H. Ford has used whip ;). I mean that sun, wet and dirt darken natural color of hide. If you order whip in natural color it will be darker for few weeks. Of course you can order whip in another oclor from any maker I think :).

Mal,

David Morgan made ALL the whips in the first 3 movies in natural tan, the same color you see in the pictures of my website. All vegetable-tanned leathers will darken with exposure to sunlight. Also, leather dressing will darken the leather, as well as saddle soap and dirt. Thus, a natural tan whip will look rather pale when new, but with use and age it will get that rich brown color you see in the movies. The older the whip, the darker it gets.

As for specifics about the whips used in Last Crusade, none exist. David Morgan style has been evolving through out the years. The DM whips that look "Last Crusade" are the ones made in the late 80's to early 90's.

Thank you, Bernardo.

I appreciate the info and the insight. I am very new to the whip market and it's good to know that there are ways of getting the coloration I am looking for.

I'm not sure this is entirely accurate. Or is it?

Check out this page on the DM website for more details on how the leather workshop is being run and who is braiding the whips: http://www.davidmorgan.com/workshop.html?cPath=7_187&. It's a nice, detailed list of all the people who have a hand in making the whips at DM and exactly what part of the process each of them contributes to.

You are welcome Mal.

Satipo, last time I checked (last week), he was still doing some cutting and braiding.

I thought you might like to see this pic of three Morgans made in different decades. On the left, a Morgan from the 80's, in the middle one from the 90's, and on the right one made in 2000.

All of them are natural tan, so it's obvious how dark they become in time. You can also see the subtle evolution in style between them.

Now that certainly solidifies the point you made above. Thank you for posting it!
