As far as natural distressing goes, it has a lot to do with the leather you start out with. Behold, the 1984 LL BEAN goatskin that will not age, will not distress, and still squeaks like the day it was born, despite being worn for over 20 years in the soaking rain, the flying snow, the baking sun, and a fight with not one but two angry rhinos.
my wings lamb jacket has gotten a few small rips in it (caught on a nail or whatever), am i the only one that experiences that (as i always see more worn then torn)?

That’s actually what happens in real life with lambskin. What world are you living in anyway? This is the fantasy Indiana Jones world you’ve popped in on, where lambskin “distresses” and loses color without being ripped to shreds.
Here's a Gibson & Barnes goatskin prototype that was purchased in 2000, (and subsequently distressed) by COW member Koreana Jones. He sold me the jacket two years ago. Cheers
Purchased in 2000 you say? What's the timeline with this jacket exactly? When I called to order mine in 2001, it was only offered in lambskin and wasn't in their online catalog yet. I had to custom order mine in goatskin. Kathy Falcon tried to talk me out of it. And weren't they still putting Flightsuits labels on their jackets in 2000? I may be wrong. I probably am wrong.

Is that jacket missing handwarmer slots?
You must have called in very early 2000 or maybe 1999. This jacket does have the G&B label, but I remember that some prototypes had the Flightsuits label. My original personal prototype was in deerskin and had the Gibson & Barnes label. No handwarmers in this jacket. The pocket flaps weren't right on this one either. I still like the jacket though. Cheers

Thanks.
I just looked up the invoice. I ordered it on January 10, 2001. It was delivered in early March 2001. Sometime during that period it appeared on their online catalog. The reason I wondered about the label is that I have a Flight Suits G-1 from October 2000 with the Flight Suits label.
Mine looks almost exactly like that one but it does have the handwarmer pockets.
Look at how the formed creases in the sleeves have distressed during those years.
Yeah, same thing happened to mine. I began to notice distressing in the folds of the leather that weren't there originally. It adds a nice touch to the overall effect, I think.
My hair looks really weird in those pics. I should have worn my fedora. Not only is it a functional and stylish hat, but it covers those embarrassing bad hair days!

Kitty litter, minus the kitty's litter.
Exactly. Although im sure Indiana Jones would'nt mind a little on his jacket, please. We hava a lot of gearheads who is affraid they get a scratch in their new shiny jacket and get their hat wet and dirty. The Indy "costume" is supposed to be like that. What is all that bullwhip training an the right gear gonna do if you aint ready to get yourself and your gear dirty like Indy.

If you're going for a Raiders style of distressing then you have to be subtle
about it. Mine has had many alcohol rubs followed by acetone and different
grits of sandpaper. Oh...and Fullers Earth goes a long way.
Without Fullers.
Great jacket! What color is it?
EDIT: i found out in an old thread.

Yeah, that's the best distressing job I've seen. Looks like it could have come straight from Temple of Doom!
my first "Indy Jacket"
same as Davy Jones and Tredwell's. Got it at a Wilsons outlet store when i was a wee lad, before the idea of SA gear had even crossed my brain
. \
i've had this thing for many years, and the only damage is a small tear on the back.
Unfortunately, this jacket no longer appears to be available. i've looked all over, and can't find it anywhere.
This jacket has been quite abused, and is still in remarkably good condition. Then about two years ago i got a black lambskin jacket for nicer occasions, and the first day i wore it, it got caught on a bathroom door handle. my old jacket has been with me on some true adventures, but that door handle ripped a huge hole in the sleeve of that lambskin. I thought i must have gotten a defective product. Imagine my surprise when i was told that all lambskin is delicate like that. I vowed i would never buy lambskin again.
Sorry to tell whipwarrior, one cannot be always nice, your jacket seam more runnied than distress. For me, it looks more artificaly spoiled than naturaly used.
ortiz344 wrote:well, i kinda agree here, i respect the idea you had, but its just kinda fubar at this point, i think even indy would get another jacket
Why? It still has a little dye left on it.
Rom Hunter, I have to ask. What are you doing with your jacket to naturally distress the inside of the action pleats?

That jacket died last month, and I burned it. Thanks for the sentiment.
i think why people are reacting on this distressing is because of the big contrast between the dark and the light spots.
I like it.it has the LC look.but if it was maby dressed up with brown pecards after distressing it would give it that flow between the ruff light spots and the darker areas
I always enjoy seing well worn jackets, but in this thread one could get the impression that distressed is always "over-done" or unnatural.
I dont like the look of the LC-jacket because it IMO was too obvious in some scenes that the distressing was intended and not natural. But I still prefer distressing some of the hides, especially the lamb, since I find the non-distressed/new jacket very un-Indy.
Distressing the authentic brown lamb slightly means a world of difference in appearrance. When removing the new plastic-like coating with mild sandpaper You get a mat-darkbrown jacket that looks exactly Raiders. Distressing the cow in the same way ended up looking like a damaged hide instead when I tried, and the goat, though being a fine hide, turned into a totally different look than expected, maybe because of the grain of the leather being different.
The new CS novapelle is the first jacket I've been totally happy with right out of the famous Wested-bag. It needs NO distressing to be SA, and I guess it will also be the first jacket I will actually take care of (Pecards...) instead of the opposite.
So to the matter of distressing vs natural wear I will say, that it depends 100% on the amount and quality of the distressing.
Whipwarrior, I liked your LC jacket! Those 2 pics didn't show it to it's best. You had other shots where you'd blended the distressing in and it looked JUST like the screen jacket.
they're two different locations at the University of Florida.
Hey Treadwell---That's really funny. I was another HUGE Indyfan at UF from '89-'92. When I stayed on campus I was at Rawlings.....You still in Florida?
That's hilarious... I have to admit that I find most distressed jackets very unconvincing and kind of sad. Why sand the #### out of them? "Gee, I wanna look just like my hero only I haven't been anywhere and don't really know how to make it look real..."
The jackets look fantastic new. Part of the fun is wearing them and watching them age - kinda like a good marriage.
