I love Caicedo (pure) Whips! - Updated with Pic!

Post by mooniteman »

Hey there guys - I'm a new poster but loooong time lurker here and i just got my brand new whip from pure whips .... lets just say I broke up with my girl friend a little while ago and when I got my whip I was like " Girlfriend? What Girlfriend."

But the whip was his 8ft 8 plait whip and its beautiful - really amazing - i was expecting to be a little disappointed - but Wow I'm blown away.

I'll get a pic up later today!

Moony

***Updated

Okay - I promised a pic - and I remembered my Imac has a built in camera so ignore the devilishly handsome rogue on the left - but here's the pic - and FYI I did indeed Re-dye the whip a little to look more SA - though if you notice it gets a little lighter brown by the tip as I'm not done dyeing.

Thanks again GUS!

And yes - thats my wested in the pic - and an Indy 4 poster

For the price I was expecting a costume whip.
What I got, was a really nice whip.
It is darkening up nicely with use. :D

That is exactly what I wanted to hear. I've been on the fence about this whip myself.

Pretty sure mine came priority mail.
I think Gus would ship ups/fedex if you picked up the tab.
He is a fast shipper as well. My whip arrived from order to house in under a week.

I'd also like to thank Gus. I have one of his whips, and it's really a fantastic piece. I'm definitely gonna get another one (or two) down the road. The speed of his production and delivery coupled with the quality of his product and the PRICE! I'm very impressed. I try to send business his way whenever I can.

HI thanks for all the great comments on the whips. :D
I ship with usps unless told to ship another way. Via fedex ups.
I work very hard to get everyones order out in time. Without losing the quality of the work for the whip.
:D

Hello guys, I too am new to posting after reading the board for some time. After all the good word I read here about Gus's whips I broke down and ordered one a couple weeks ago. I can't really add anything...only to say buy with confidence. Gus is a great guy and also exceeded my expectations. I got his 12 plait 8 foot special. Anyhow, a few pictures are below. My only problem is now I am thinking maybe I should also order a 10 footer from Gus sooner than later :D .
I wanted to say thank you to Gus again.
Ben

yep I placed an order for one of the 8 foot 12 plait specials over the weekend so now comes the wait  . I talked to Gus on the phone the other day about the whips so I'm really looking forward to receiving it. If it turns out as good as I think I just might be ordering a 10 footer from him in the future.

i have posted on this topic before but i will say it a gain gus rocks big time fast shipping super friendly and when there was a minor mix up he sent me double the replacement poppers. I do not own a morgan and never will ( I love my wife and would hate to lose her over a toy) so I cannot compare the two but the quality is the best of the 5 whips i do own.

rebelgtp & Machone...A 10 ft is definately in my future as well....Lucky for you, unlike most things in this hobby, there won't be much of a wait. :)

At last! Thanks for the pic...
Darken up those knots a bit more and you've got the first and probably only G.C.Jr KOTCS whip!

Mooniteman, I really like the look and color of your whip with the dying you are doing. If I order another I may ask Gus to dye it for the instant gratification of opening the package to find a beautiful dark brown whip inside. I've decided to let the 8 footer tan naturally, which I think will provide it's own rewards.

Ron - you can't be more right about the wait for most items. There is something to be said about placing an order and getting a handmade item in a week. How often does that happen anywhere? Thanks for the welcome.

well you guys all convinced me, I just placed my order this morning. Ive been looking to get an 8 footer in 12 plait for a while. I have a 10 foot IOAB from adam and its great, but i wanted something that would break in more and have more flow like the 12 plaits. I almost bought a Todds costume whip, but Gus's is a better price, and is constructed like a normal whip. Cant wait to start using mine in 3 weeks. Thats for posting everyone, i was running out of options till i saw this thread.

Hi, another new member here. I'm making a bullwhip out of natural tan cowhide and wanted to ask a question.

Mooniteman,

What sort of dye did you use on your whip if you don't mind me asking? You have done a great job and the color is excellent. I'd like to use this dye myself.

Thanks in advance,

Jon

Whip dyeing

Post by mooniteman »

I used Kelley's medium brown dye and I mixed it with Wilson's leather conditioner so that it made a strange paste and lighted the brown so i wasn't applying a streaky dark brown mess.

Basically i filled the bottom of a plastic cup with the lotion then added a few drops of brown then rubbed it onto the whip from top to bottom with an old sock. Its a good way to control the shade of brown otherwise you get a very dark color and it soaks in instantly to leather - as well as hands.

Hope this helps!

Well, after seeing the pictures posted here, I just ordered my first whip, an 8' 8 plait Caicedo. I can't wait to get it.
