Comprehensive Indy whip price list and comparison (03/01/13)
ok, I'm not sure if there's a reason I haven't seen this done before (watch someone provide the link, a suggestion to use the "search", and a ) but I really wanted to make a list of all known Indy style bullwhip offerings with page links, prices, and pictures. much like I've seen done with the hats and jackets. so I'm going to start it off, and let me know if I've forgotten anything.. and if any vendors don't want pictures off their sites used, maybe some owners from the community can contribute. also, possible a review from anyone that has any of the whips... let me know of any I miss. And to clear up any confusion.. where more than 4 whip length options were listed, I chose the 4 most common.. all prices are also for 12 plait kangaroo hide whips.
Where applicable, I have listed prices as roo-hide/kip-hide. If there is no designation, assume the whips are roo-hide.
Note: where I've had to convert the currency, US prices are in brackets, and current as of 10/09/09.. as are all other prices.

Due to the numerical order having some correlation to the Raiders collage, as vendors are added they will be listed in the order in which they were discovered. In no way does the order of vendors listed relate to any implied preference.

I'm not really a "full-time" whipmaker and am still learning. The only Indy whip that I really make is a 6 foot and an occasional 8 footer.
http://bullwhips.org
6 foot indy style bullwhips $285.00
My 6 footies that I've shown David Morgan have gone from "it looks like a whip, but taper is soo critical..." to "it does what it's supposed to do, but..." finally to "not too bad, but..." I'm still working towards gettting a passing grade from him.
That said if you are buying a whip, you should really order from a fulltime maker like Joe Strain, Paul Nolan, etc to support them.

thanks. ok, I added giovanni and louie foxx, and changed the currency on mr. martin's whips to AUD. also I changed western stage prop's whips to Mark Allen. I know he doesn't really make them, but for all intents and purposes, they're his whips. Joe; your name is still in big bold letters across the top page of their Indy whips section in the 2007 catalog, fyi. also, those are Gus' prices for his kip whips.. I know he also offers them in roo hide, and I was quoted a price for an 8 footer, but I don't know how he decides his pricing, so I'll let him post them if he wants to.
I'll probably add kip price lists too at some point, but I want to get pics up first.
note: I never would have guessed there were almost 20 indy whip vendors out there before I started doing this (with pagey and joe strain)!

Ztmario, you beat me to the punch I’ve been working on a similar list for the forum and for the Indy Gear site update, but it wasn’t ready for posting yet. Great list though and since you already put up the topic, lets go ahead and roll with it.
I’d really like to see the whip makers represented here, post a picture or two of the Indiana Jones bullwhips that they make, especially if they would like them added to the site when the vendor updates are finished.

well, if you have the ability as a staff member to edit my post, feel free to add whatever you like! as far as the pictures go, I was going to just take the main picture off of each site and use it as the representation here. I thought it would be cool to use member's personal pictures, or whatever the vendor wanted, but I figured that since every vendor isn't present in the community, it's not fair to only have SOME vendor's with hi-res product pics. so, if it's what they use to market the whip on their site, it's what I was going to use. probably scaled down to 150 x 150 thumbnail that would link to the original size. also, I'm definitely going to add the kip hide lists.BullWhipBorton wrote:Ztmario, you beat me to the punch I’ve been working on a similar list for the forum and for the Indy Gear site update, but it wasn’t ready for posting yet. I agree, for a comprehensive list everyone’s work should be represented fairly and accurately. Most of those whip makers listed are members here though, so at the same time I don’t have a problem with giving those who are active vendors and members of COW a chance to put there best work forward if they so choose, as long as the images posted don’t not exceed the 640x480 pixels and 50kb limit.
If you decide to post another whip makers images from his or her websites, be sure to get their permission first. I don’t think they would have a problem with there work being reposted and represented here, but better to be safe then sorry especially if this thread grows into becoming an official informative sticky, I don’t want any one getting miffed that their pictures where posted here with out their permission.
Also, just something to keep in mind is that Mark Allen’s Western Stage Props Indy whips are made by a few different whip makers, so the picture you see in the catalog or their website may be slightly different then the one you end up with, hopefully some of the memebers can add in with the few differnt indy style bullwhips they have gotten from WSP.

borton,
as you can see, I added pics for all but joe strain, who doesn't have any indy specific pics up yet. all the thumbnails are 150px either horizontally or vertically, and the dimensions are constrained. depending on whether the image was originally wider or taller determined which dimension I made 150. I also rotated some pics to be more uniform, and cropped out everything down to the whip in each picture, but cropped out NONE of the whip in any picture. also, each picture is a thumbnail for the original pic, completely unedited. wherever there was some sort of TM or address on the picture, I moved it to crop, and then replaced it. this is pretty much as fair as I think it can get. maybe you can come up with some sort of template email to send out to the whip vendors that aren't a part of the community? I'd be happy to send it, but since I'm very lazy, maybe you can do that to?
for the rest of you, get some reviews in here!!

Ztmario,
Great work! I think this will really help everyone out, especially people who are new to the forum.
For a pic of Joe Strain's Indy whip, there is a picture of one on his site on this page:
http://www.northernwhipco.com/Whips.htm
You could probably use that one.
I will snag a picture of one of my more recent Indy whips for you to use.
Regards,
Paul Nolan

thanks, I hope it does. I added the handle collage, which I'm sure some people will find interesting. something makes me think I've seen it before, but I didn't find one posted. I've also added the Joe Strain pic. I'd be happy to update your picture to something better/newer, all I ask is that it be a picture advertised on your homepage also.midwestwhips wrote:Ztmario,

I think Jim is making whips to order again, at least it says so on his new website is www.northeastwhips.com Check with him to be sure though.
Coronado3, Indy style bullwhips made by Terry Jacka won’t be added to this list just yet. These whips are not widely available for sale, as soon as that changes though (and official word regarding the Indy 4 whips is announced) we will add them, but not before.

thanks for all the kind words everyone.. but I did this for myself as much as anyone else! I'll probably be upgrading to a roo hide whip, and I think I'm much more sure of which one I want now...
a few notes:
-terry jacka does not come up in any google searches I did in a capacity where you can actually buy a whip from him.
-northeastwhips.com certainly does seem to be offering an indy whip. I'll probably get around to adding him tonight.
-dunno about jim markell, but if you find somewhere to buy his indy whips, I'll add him here.
-since we still don't have any whip reviews, I tried to add two threads from COW about each vendor's whips to the list. unfortunately, I couldn't find threads on all of them. if anyone comes across them, post em.
also, just because I received a few pm's on the subject, I chose the pictures for the whips based upon what each vendor uses to advertise their own products on their own websites. if I owned a (random vendor) whip, it would be nice of me to shellac it up, pull out the 8 megapixel camera and take some professional looking hi-res shots of it to use on the list, but I think that's kind of biased.
for instance, I'm sure the picture of the morgan whip IS outdated, but if he's satisfied with advertising his product using out of date photos, who am I to take it upon myself to post a really good picture of his whip in a thread where it's being compared to vendors? I'm not his marketing director. for that reason, I'd rather not use pictures of member's whips, or pictures that aren't found on the vendor's site. and granted, I understand that at any time, any vendor can request that their picture be pulled from this thread, but I still think it's important that this be as impartial of a list as possible.
I guess what I'm REALLY trying to say is that... if anyone has any questions about what pictures are used or aren't used, I'd kindly ask that you PM them to bullwhipborton.
edit: wow, a sticky?? ..I guess I better get those cowhide price lists up sooner.

BWB is right, even though Joe Strain is no longer making them for WSP, I still am, and I'm sure there are one or two others. I know Russell Schultz, and Jack Perry have at certain points. So there are slight differences between the different whipmakers.bullwhipborton wrote:Also, just something to keep in mind is that Mark Allen’s Western Stage Props Indy whips are made by a few different whip makers, so the picture you see in the catalog or their website may be slightly different then the one you end up with, hopefully some of the memebers can add in with the few differnt indy style bullwhips they have gotten from WSP.
Also, I'd like to add that Indy whips may vary even by the same maker, as the leather can vary. Though you can request specifics, and the whipmaker can try to pick out a hide that will suit what you want.

I'll get that new picture to you as soon as I get it updated on my site. The handle comparison is a great collage, good job!
You won't be able to come up with a website or contact information for Terry Jacka as he only sells wholesale. As far as I know there is no way to buy a whip directly from him.
Also, Jim Markell is northeastwhips.com
And thank you for posting the threads for the reviews, that was a very good idea! Are you limiting it to two threads per?
Again, this is a great thread, it benefits everyone!

ztmario,
I don't know what you think about it, but you might want to conisder putting up info about the other screen accurate Indy whip offered from various whip makers - the Young Indy. I know Paul Nolan and Giovanni Celeste both make them, and I believe I got a quote from Bernardo when I was first looking (though I could be wrong).

I did start to produce again at the end of last year. I'm temporarily on hold for a few weeks because I had broken my hand last month. It has been a pain in the neck (and hand!) because I've had to turn down a few orders recently that I just couldn't give a definite start time on. I was already in the middle of a large order when the injury happened, so I have to finish that one before I can start on anything new.

ok, I ran through the list quickly and updated all the prices and currency conversions. first thing I want to note is that some prices actually dropped from six months ago. and I don't mean because of the currency value, either. at the same time, nearly all prices went up.. some as little as $15, and some over $100 for the same length whip.. which I personally think is (use your imagination). then again, some whip artists who could have EASILY raised their prices have kept them the same or very close to the same, which makes them even better deals in this inflated market. anyway, it's changed.

Special Prices ONLY for COW members
Ztmario,
Thank you for updating the prices, I know my prices have been raised once or twice since you first put this up. Something to also keep in mind is that over the past 6 months the price of Kangaroo hide has gone up, as well as the Australian Dollar, which causes the material cost to U.S. whipmakers to go up even more.
That being said, it would be interested to know who's prices went down.
I know that most reputable whipmakers are trying to keep their prices as close to the same as they can even though the costs are going up, and the huge demand for Indy whips right now.
I also wanted to mention that I offer a substantial discount available to COW members ONLY. I have made mention of it in other area's of the forum. This offer is, and has always been, ONLY for COW members. If you are ordering a whip, you must PM me through COW first, so I can verify that you are indeed a member.
Here are my Special Indy prices for COW members ONLY:
6ft - $350
8ft - $400
10ft - $465
12ft - $550
It would be great if you could add the COW special prices to the list as well.
Also, I do not know how much longer I will be able to keep this large of a discount going for COW members, but I will keep it available for as long as I can.
Regards,
Paul Nolan

paul,
I'm about to run to the gym, but I'll add the COW prices as soon as I get back. I didn't know you did that, and I think it's awesome. along with you and AB, I think more vendors should consider something like it, since I have to imagine a large percentage of their business comes from the forum (especially when you take into account how many COW members are multiple item buyers).
and I'm sure that hide prices have something to do with some of the price jumps, but obviously there is a lot more than just that going on with may 22nd coming around. and like I said.. we're talking more than just the $10-20 jumps that you and some of the other vendors raised prices, and well into the $50+ range. I kind of think 15-25% is a lot for just six months. but that's just me.
also, only about three or four vendors lowered prices.. and not much, but I did notice that western stage props dropped about $25. at least, I know that their 12 footer was $700 before. maybe this has something to do with joe strain not making whips for them anymore.. and his whips now being $100 cheaper than they used to sell them for?

I guess the Australian dollar difference is hitting all the whipmakers at the same time. Here is the Midwestwhips updated Indy price list:
6ft - $405

10ft - $565
12ft - $680
COW member prices:
6ft - $385

10ft - $525
12ft - $630
Add $25 for KOTCS style.

Adam's whips are more than decent- they are expertly done.
Adam is very creative. He is also congenial and accommodating.
I have several of his whips. I particularly like one he made for me out of deer hide. I have a hefty cowhide whips he made that is one of my favorite "users."
His prices are reasonable, but I believe his turn around time has been lengthened due to his performing obligations.

What's the difference and anyone have a whip they will sell?
Fellow OORA's -
Anyone have the time to explain the difference between cow and kangaroo hide. I know the difference in animals but what about quality as in for a collector. I will probably play around with the whip, but not so much that it would mess it up.
Second - Anyone have multiple whips? Anyone have one of quality that they want to sell for a bargain?

Hi Everyone,
I thought I chime in here. I'm back in the States--SE Idaho to be exact. I've just landed a house. Once settled, I'm going to look into making whips again. I've been keeping tabs on roo skin and am not duly impressed, compared to the quality and size I could get for a lower price in the late 90's. But, I'm going to look into it again and start making something. I may make whips in cowhide--we'll see.
Best Regards,
Paul Stenhouse

When I posted earlier in this thread about now having a much nicer whip (than a cruddy one jokingly pictured that I got back in the day), I neglected to say what it was.
It's a roo from James Emery, or classicbullwhips (formerly known as earpick). Now, I'm not a whip expert, and haven't held or cracked other whips for comparison (other than the cruddy one), but I'm quite happy with it. I'll try to take some pics.

Mike Murphy does great, award winning, work.
He is versatile in the types of whips he makes, and his designs, and quality, are first rate.
I have 6-7 of his whips including a swivel handle bullwhip, and his "Old Tom's" whip: his unique rendering of a stock whip (this particular whip won first place at the Melbourne competition).
His web site has lots of pictures and plenty of helpful information. You won't be disappointed with one of his whips.

Whips has 2 bolsters and 2 plaited bellys, and are made with kangaroo. I add 10 polypropylen crackers to every whip. Falls are made with redhide.
Shipmment cost is 18 USD. Time needed for deliver the parcel is 6-7 days.
I need 5 days to make the order, so for now you will have to wait about 1-2 weeks to have a whip in your hands

Re: Comprehensive Indy whip price list and comparison (11/20/08)
All,
I've moved back from NZ--not that it's really important. More important is the good looking skins that just showed up on my doorstep.
I'm going to slowly go back into it--I've got a job with a company I really love working with, and don't need the money, and am short on time, too.
However, if and when I do make a few, I'm going to try sticking with my original pricing scheme--$30/foot. Now, I just have to check the price of those skins! I may experiment with english kip as well. Plaits okay and looks decent.
Taking a hiatus was twofold-move overseas, and I felt the quality of skins I could lay hands on wasn't good enough for me.
Cheers all,
Paul Stenhouse
