Magnoli HJs?

Post by Chewbacca Jones »

Does anybody have an HJ from Magnoli yet? I was wondering what an owner thought of it. And, of course, pictures!!!!

Have you seen the pix in the announcement thread? It looks pretty sweet. I don't know if it's ready for sale yet, or if it's still in production.

They've been available for purchase for about six weeks now. I've sold several of them so far, but haven't received any customer photos yet. One of my customers did leave a review at my site though:

I'm pretty sure a few of them are COWers, so hopefully they'll chime in.

Kind regards,
Indy

That's pretty cool thanks!!! :D

The first fedora I've owned since the mid 80's when I picked one up in a vintage clothing shop in Notting Hill (London). It was the same colour as Indy's and was made in Alexandria, Egypt. It had a bound edge to the brim as I recall. Seemed very nicely made although it was a tad too small. Wish I still had it but I left it at some girlfriend's house many years ago...

The colour looks a little odd in this pictures but in normal light the hat is a decent SA brown!

:-k I missed this thread when it started, I was working 90+ hours a week at the time, but looking at djd's hat, I can see Steve's handiwork in it, as far as shape and bulges. It looks a lot like my AB. Nice hat djd. Did Steve use his new block on these hats?

Yes, Steve's using his new blocks on these HJs.

Here is a great shot sent to me by one of my customers visiting Machu Picchu:

SO the question still stands: how does it compare to AB and other hats in terms of screen accuracy?

Although I don't have one yet, I can guess that this will win the prize for SA hats. It's the AB block, Herbert Johnson felt, and the Magnoli quality seal of approval. That's why I can't pass it up. My quest for the ultimate Indy hat will likely end here. (Not that I'll stop buying them, anyway!)

Although from pics it seems pretty darn screen accurate, i've only really seen one comment on whether this hat is screen accurate and whether it will hold up a good raiders shape.

COMMENT ON SCREEN ACCURACY OF THE DARN HAT! I DARE YOU!

thats a pretty loaded question.....which depends on what the owner considers as screen accurate.

most of the beautiful feds i've seen on the board are missing that nifty little channel and the reverse taper caused by a cinched ribbon. alot of folks will not consider this in the SA category.....on the other side of the spectrum, most of the public will think a brown cowboy hat is sa

Screen accurate to WHICH scene? The hat at the begining of Raiders looks different than in the middle of the movie, yet they're both screen accurate. You can't have one hat which is screen accurate for the entire movie unless you repeatedly rebash the hat every other moment.

Alright wiseguy, I guess I meant the opening sequence hat, before he has to wet his hat because of the hovitos.

Not trying to be a wiseguy. It's just been debated SO many times as to what makes a s.a. hat that I've seen folks call a Raiders hat with no turn NOT screen accurate, when in fact, the hat didn't have the turn until later in the movie. So you CAN have a s.a. Raiders hat with OR without the turn. But now that you specified which scene you're looking at for your version of a s.a. Raiders hat, it will make it easier for folks to answer your question.

I've never owned a HJ, so I can't fairly comment on how well or how long it will hold any given shape, so I'll have to leave that to the others to address. But as far as AB v. HJ in the general s.a. comparison, keep in mind Fedora painstakingly researched and tweaked his block shape to get what many consider THE Raiders hat. The typical mderd HJ is not made on the same block as when Raiders was made, and as far as we know, that block is M.I.A. But the Magnoli HJ's are stretched over the Fedora block (as best as I recall) which puts them back up the poll in regards to screen acuracy. Ultimately, you'll have to gather up the information and figure out what suits your needs and wants best. Good luck!

I am with you Bink. To me, there are several different looks in ROTLA.

When you really get down to small details that is. There are even a couple of tapered hats in that film that you see very little of.

Getting that channel to stay is a function of head shape too. Harrisons forhead slopes back quite a bit, whereas mine and many of us here do not have that facet of head shape. A straight up forehead will knock that channel out unless the channel is sewn, under the ribbon. His head, does not seem to press on the channel due to the slope. Mine does.

So, some of that look that the soft Raiders felt gives us involves Harrison's head shape. A long oval with a sloping forhead. If your head is not just like his, I doubt you will ever nail each nuance of the Raiders hat, especially the channel, and his ability to pull a 5 inch crown(creased height) down to his ears without knocking out the top dent. I can pull the 5 inch crown down to my ears and my head is sitting on the dent, but some of us, if they did that with the 5 inch crown hat, our heads would push that top crease out. I have seen that with my own eyes. Head shape does play into it. Fedora

I also have one on order and Magnoli hoped my was being put together this week. It has taken a longer than expected due to Fedora's work on IJ 4. Keeping my fingers crossed, I am sure it will be worth the wait.

We are almost entirely sold out of hats, so most likely you'll have to wait until our next shipment arrives. Between that and the time it takes to finish, I would estimate a two month turn-around right now.

Indy, you might want to adjust that turnaround eta a little bit, what with Steve's workload and all. I ordered on April 6th, I'm still waiting... excitedly.

The new eta is based on ordering now. Steve is pretty much caught up with my hats, so everyone who has ordered one should have it before Halloween.

IM, I have to agree with Johnny. Better to over-estimate than under-estimate. If you've ever been on Steve's waiting list, you know that ol' Murphy loves messin' with his time table!

Seriously, though. When the flood of deliveries start, their gonna need their own show-off thread!
