what piece of gear got you into the whole Indy thing....

Well when I was little I saw it and just wanted to be him for Halloween. So I got all the stuff I could and had a full costume. But then as I grew out of stuff, the one piece that I kept was the hat (well it was a Dorfman and it even had a Raiders bash!!!) and when I grew out of that one I just got another one, which I still have, only with a modified bash and a changed ribbon. Then I got a WPG MkVII, and then replaced my Dorfman with an Akubra, and it just took off from there. Now all I need to finish it off is a replica S&W!! I've kept a document the whole time showing my progress and what gear I've gone through.

I'm pretty sure the majority will pin it down to the jacket. I know I will.

While the fedora certainly defines the character, it does seem a bit too costumey. Leather jackets, on the other hand, are so much more common that anyone can get away with it. Same can be said with the pants, but I doubt anyone can honestly say that the pants define Indy for them.

Now unless, you're living in the outback, or are a game or park warden by occupation, chances are you won't be able to get away with the shirt either, since it is basically a pleated safari shirt. And similar to the pants, for most of us, the first time we saw the shirt we either thought it was a generic shirt, or just another safari shirt. I don't think it really made a difference to anyone BUT gearheads.

Whips would be unpractical unless you're a cattle rancher or a cowboy, and the gun just switches too many times to pin down (unlike the PPK for example

). The boots... well, that's something that only a true blue gearhead would notice!

Basically, I think the point that I'm trying to make is that for most casual or starter fans of the Indy movies, they'll most likely want to settle on picking up something that they can actually use regularly without raising too many eyebrows, as opposed to hanging up on a mantle. And Indy's leather jacket fits that bill perfectly!

I get away with the shirt just fine! I've actually gotten compliments on it before. But I agree with your points you've made - you did forget to mention how the bag fits in to all that, but I'm sure it's the same category as the pants, only a little closer to the jacket side of things. I think my previous post only backs up your statement - saying how I got all of the gear I could (when I was little) to make a costume, and then always kept a hat through all the changes. It was basically born out of a costume.

My first piece of gear was a DP from Disneyworld in like 1990. When I started collecting again in 2000ish it was the MKVII.

Like so many, I had a Disney fedora (mine was the Stetson ToD) from way back. Also like so many, what really did it in the "modern" age of collecting gear was hunting for the jacket. I found COW, and it's all downhill from there!

I agree with the sentiment that, in my life anyway, the hat is kind of a costume-y piece, but the jacket you can take with you anywhere, and it is admired as a great looking article of clothing. Actually, without the hat, only the really discerning notice what's special about the jacket.

I suppose I'm one of those cats that would prefer not to have the Raiders March hummed at him out of the blue. Maybe it's a token of respect, maybe it's mocking, but I'd just rather not go there. My hat's off--literally--to those of you who rock the whole gear every day!

It was the hat for me. I had a wool felt hat that was brown, which was my first. It was replaced by a Federation which I still have. I have an AB on order, but that won't be here until December.

The other item was the bag.

Well THAT price is still the same, but...

48 - 50 (Regular or Long) £160 ( $320 )
52 - 54 (Regular or Long) £175 ( $350 )

It used to only be sizes 50 and upwards that got charged £160. Now they're lowering the cap to 48-50, and raising the price for size 52 upwards.

For me it was the bag. I always loved Indy's bag and knew it had to be military surplus, but I had no idea what. In fact my search for the bag led me to this place. I've always been a fan of military surplus (to some extent) and it not only looks great, but is highly useful and very functional. Sorry guys, not the jacket or the hat, but the plain ol' bag for this gearhead. Love the hat though!

Okay, here we go:

First, at the age of four I got a Disney fedora (1995)
I lived with that one until the age of seven, and didn't have another piece of gear until....
2002- My dad finally gives me the Disney fedora he got in 1995, which actually had an LC bash. Later that year I buy a black bullwhip made in Toledo, Spain (from 2000 to 2003 I lived in Spain)
2003- Bought a not-so-screen-accurate messenger bag from Old Navy.
2006- Finally outgrow that hat, buy a Mayser Young Indy (still overseas, but this time living in Belgium).

So, the hat got me started. Later this year I shall be getting at least one Akubra.

Since I had been wearing fedoras for years, I figured an Indy-styled hat could wait a bit, which is why I went for the jacket first. I find it odd that folks are so afraid to wear a fedora places. It never stopped me. I guess if you wear the hat, and not the hat wearing you, people will notice that. I frequently get compliments on my hats when I wear them, as opposed to folks making fun of it.

well the first piece of indy gear i had was a bullwhip however it was far from screen accurate, but at least it wasn't a $10 mexico special. then i had one of the official hats when i was little...in my second generation of indy gear i started with an AB order and a mk vii, then got one of my favorite parts the jacket! shortly there after 2 new whips

The hat and the jacket. My first Indy fedora was the Stetson "official" hat back in 1984 and my first Indy jacket was one my mother created out of a trenchcoat. I still have them both today. The fedora's in bad shape (wool) and the jacket won't fit anymore unless I drop about 80 pounds.

I just bought my first piece of gear yesterday, although I have been an Indy fan for years! I have to save up a lot of money since I cannot get a job because of my age-15- (saving takes forever considering my allowance is $10 a week if I mow the yard; $2.50 if I don't

) Next year, I will be eligible to apply for a job, so I naturally cannot wait!

Well, I am ready to buy a MKVII from Endicott's but my mom says that Indy gear collecting is a passing phase....blah blah blah. I keep on telling her that the bag is a piece of history and WWII is not just a phase or a fad!

Oh well, if anybody else has been through this already, please give me some tips!

Keep talking about it, after like a year they might allow you to get one (1) piece of gear, then after a second year the second one and so on. Then when you get your own credit card you can get new gear every week.

For me, there wasn't one particular piece of gear that got me started.

One day, I just wanted to start dressing like Indy. I had bought a fake gun (which I had taken to a party as part of a gangster outfit) and it wasn't until some years later that I bought an Akubra, a Wested Raiders lambskin in authentic brown and then a whip, and the rest just kind of went on from there.

What a coincidence......my mom said the exact same thing last Friday.

Well, my parents said as long as I bought the expensive stuff with the money I earn (my allowance and odd jobs I do for neighbors), they might get me the MkVII. Or I could ask my greatgrandfather for his old WW2 bag.

It was the jacket. I had never been interested in anything else and would never have thought of wearing a hat. I'd been researching the jacket several years before I joined this forum, and while going thru some old book marks, found COW again. Still not too interested in the whip or bag. Just the cool clothes.

What actualy got me started was the hat...after all...it is what makes indiana jones indiana jones. However the first piece i bought was the jacket and to this day is probably my one addition to my indy gear i dont think i could bring myself to get rid of.

Hmm İ've always had an interest in indy, but it wasn't until 2004 that İ decided to look around for some clothing. That is also how İ found this site. I think the first things I bought was the pants and shirt from wested. I was going to buy the jacket as well, but I was afraid it wouldn't work well during the winters around here, and bought another jacket from them instead.

I remember buying the bag, lighter and the sand bag around the same time, but I thınk the pants and shirt came first.

My first piece of gear was the bag from Lee. He helped me get my first pair of Aldens, Leather Consessionaires jacket, glasses and my first Herbert Johnson (which I gave to Goodwill after it was too small with a hole at the top of the pinch Shoulda kept it!).

For me the Fedora has always been the most important piece of gear (what a surprise...

I would have to say that it was the group of COW members at the first Canada summit that got me hooked. The gear came later.

Buff dragged me kicking and screaming across the Canadian border...Oh yea thats right we got jacked up by the border patrol first and thats only because I had to open my big mouth telling the sexy female border patrol gaurd that she was pretty. And the fact that Buff had packed ever hat box in the world in the back of the car made them think we were dangerous people or something.

I wasnt sure what to expect when you have to think about hanging around a bunch of guys dressed as Indy all weekend. I had the best time sitting around making some really good new friends.\

At the end of the summit everyone (Farnham. Guybrush, Gater and Buff) was telling me to check out COW. "Just become a member" I said that I would check it out but that I wouldnt be buying all this stuff. It just wasnt me and I didnt think I would ever dress like Indy.

I WAS WRONG! 'Now that I own whips, bags, props and 5 Fedoras I think i'm pretty hooked on the whole thing.

So again the people of COW got me into the hobby.

Thanks to all those who attended the first Canada summit for treating me like a member and friend. They are why i'm here.

I always wanted the gear, I just didn't know you could actually get it until I found this site and met you all. My first item was the bag which I got a month ago. I just orded the strap from Todd today.

I have to say I always wanted the jacket. My problem is, I am a screen acurate kinda guy. So no "bomber jacket" ever cut it in my book because none of them looked like IJ's. I'm working my wife over to get Daddy a new jacket this winter.... hmmm Christmas is in the winter...

I came looking for a jacket...was surfing the web for any info about what kind of jacket Indy was wearing, too see if I'd like that or a vintage bomber jacket, and found IndyGear and COW accidentally. So the jacket is what got me here, and got me going...the first thing I received was the whip, though, an IOAB, and I think that's when I was locked in.
