Webley archives

Post by Alan Eardley »

I mentioned that the archives of Webley and Scott were disposed of when the company went into receivership in December 2005.

I have news that the they have been split up, but are intact. I'm going to see a part of them next Monday. I think the owners of this part know where the remainder of them is.

Gentlemen, your expertese on the subject amazes me. I am astounded!! :D
Canyon,

Nothing controversial here! Just two middle aged dudes having a discussion...

Michaelson is correct - Mr. Barrowman is sporting a Mk IV Webley in the photograph.

He is also correct that Webleys were archaic, crude and obsolete by the beginning of the 20th century. I think that's a part of their charm - a bit like the British motorcycles that used to be made in the same city.

How about this? It's a Webley and Green .476 with a nine inch barrel. Called 'the British Peacemaker' at the time.

Alan, believe it or not, there was a compliment in my original comment.

And what's this about two middle aged gentlemen? I'm sure you are, but for Michaelson... :rolling:

Just kidding Mark! :P

It all depends on your point of reference...

Compared to Alexander the Great (at death), he's Methuselah.

Compared to the last surviving Confederate widow (at death), he's middle aged.

Compared to Methuselah (at death), he's wet behind the ears.

Been and seen. Many of the commercial records of Webley and Scott (minutes of meetings, sales books, catalogues) going back to the 1930s are now in the Birmingham County Records office. Fascinating! They don't show an export sale to a Professor Jones, so maybe he bought his Mark VI second hand?
They don't have the engineering drawings and specs (which is what I was really interested in) but I now know where these are. Still on the trail. We over 60s never give up...

Russel T Davis must be an Indy fan, in the just shown Christmas Special "The Runaway Bride" the Doctor says "I don't know, I'm making this up as I go along!" in one scene. :)

BTW Pic from an early ep of Torchwood with another pic of Jack's gun.
