Raiders birdbeak brim

Post by Fedora »

How many have noticed the nuance on the Raiders brim? The brim over his eyes. While the LC brim as I recall was flat, just like it had been ironed flat, the Raiders brim still showed evidence of being flanged. That is, the brim is not flat, but has a hump in it. Similiar to this one here on an AB.

I haven't noticed it, but it's interesting. I've molded hats myself to have a forward bend to them (Wet the brim, then place it between two heavy books and let the weight of the hat cause the front curve), but not sure how one would acheive the flanged effect.

I had the same effect on my AB Deluxe.
I requested a flanged brim on the sides and in the back, because I wanted LC style from the beginning.
I assume the brim was flanged round and round, i.e. sides, back and front and then the front was snap down. (Marc, correct me if I'm wrong).
I had to steam and iron the brim just a little bit to get rid of the "hump" and flatten the front part of the brim.
When I snap down the back of my brim there's also a hump.

Cheers

Here's one that you can see the flanged brim.

Steve, what are the odds of a feature like that developing from pulling on the front of the brim. For example, if your hat was a little too tight, you would pull the middle of the front of the brim forward to stretch it a bit. Would that distort the felt like you see there? I think it would be more dramatic with a thin felt too. Or maybe, my hat is the one that is too tight.

Yeah, some of those things could do it I guess. But it is really from the flange used on the brim. I was rather proud of this nuance on my hats, until I had some sent back and I had to iron the front brim flat. I still generally put this in the Raiders fedora though, as it is film accurate. Now if I can just run an educational campaign so everyone knows that is supposed to be there on the brim. Perhaps I should have that as an option? I am joking here, because I have only had two returned for this issue. 2 out of over 700 ain't bad. Fedora

Yeah I've noticed it, and apparently Pyroxene has noticed it also since he mentions it at the Fedora Frequently Asked Questions. ;)

It's from the same batch of rawbodies, Erri... so just stop babying yours

The newer ones are as soft as the crown though.

The brim looks kinda LCish. Still great though. Got a front and side pic?

Wow. I'm definitely liking what I'm seeing there. One of these days, I might have to get me one of these.

@Marc: How much do you pay for these "hat model" pics of me?

BTW, it's a VERY NICE hat and I'm proud to own the very first predistressed AB dlx.!
