Hey Adam,

Sure! I dyed the overlay before plaiting so that the leather absorbs the pigments better. For the handle, I calculated how long I needed to die the strands in red, and painted the rest in black.

And yes, it's cowhide. The roo hides I have ordered will arrive in a couple of weeks, and cowhide is all I have at the moment.

Nice job, Bernardo! I was wondering who the first one would be to finish a "Young Indy" whip. Looks gr8! About the comment on it being a bit long~ if anything, it looks just a bit shy of being the same length as the one in the movie. As always, awesome job!

Bernardo, you nailed it. I’ve been waiting to see what you guys came up with regarding the young Indy whip. I really like that one. The length looks about right to me, 6ft? Did you dye the black too or paint it? Any problem with color bleed on the dyed leather?

By the way the Indy bullwhip you did with the hourglass shaped handle looked really good too. Nice job

Hey Strider and Jabba,

to me it looks spot on with the length. they both look to be 6 footers to me, and if you look how bernardo's whip is coiled next to how the screen grab whip is coiled you will notice how it goes around the outside of the handle of the whip before it coils back, braided length wise. So that could be where it looks longer and shorter depending on the point of view.

Ooh, aah...once again, a direct hit as far as the exact look of the movie whip. It's very hard to tell the difference between the two whips! (totally excessive adulations, also known as 'sucking up'!)

Hey Bernardo, are you sure that handle color isn't 'blood red', possibly from a cut finger or two...

I'm not sure I understand this dilemma with the colors?

Isn't there roo hide that you can get that is pre-dyed in certain colors? Like- red - for instance? And black, especially? I've been wanting to have one of these made by a particular whip maker here (ahemcoughwinrichcough) and didn't expect that it would be too much of an issue. Is it?

Hi again,

It has taken me a while to reply, but I wanted to properly address your comments.

Strider, Steve, Dan, Paul, Jace, thank you all for the kind words.

I used a natural tan hide, that I dyed in red first for a short length, and then I dyed the rest in black. I found that I could dye black over red but not the opposite. I chose to dye the strands before plaiting, since the grease in the plaiting soap prevents the full absorsion of the pigments.

The length is 6ft, since I read somewhere it probably was the used in the scene. As far as I can tell, the handle on the original whip is just a little bit longer.

I have received an order for another 6ft Indy whip, and this time I'm going to make the handle longer.

When I tried to coil my whip to match the colis of the whip in the screen grab, I simply couldn't; my 6 footer was apparently too short. So I took out a couple of my 8 footers (a Morgan and a Stenhouse) to see if perhaps the whip displayed there was an 8 footer, and...bingo! The 8 footers coil just like the whip in the movie:

Also, I did the same crack (that R. Phoenix does in the scene) in my living room with the 8 footers and I had no problems whatsoever with the length. I also found out that is quite possible to hit your face in the same fashion that Young Indy did!

Glad you shared that last pic Bernardo, I think it's wonderful. I really hope to order a young Indy from you one day - but an 8ft as i think your observations are correct.

Incidently, regarding the colour - has anyone else noticed that the pics on the main Indygear site seem to show the young Indy as brown?? Could this be evidence that the whip was a repainted Morgan?

Bernardo, Great pictures and Interesting theory, but I am not convinced it’s an 8 ft whip just yet. The Lucas film archives lists that bullwhip as approximately 8ft long but that would probably have been measured over all length, which would include the fall and cracker. That alone would add another 2ft to a 6ft whip

Maybe it’s a different whip, but Secondly the way the light and shadow play on the bullwhip in the film capture, its very difficult at least to my eye to tell where the coiled whip ends and shadows on the wall begin giving the illusion of an extra coils. I’ve tried lightening the picture and while I could be mistaken, to me it seems like the bullwhip was hanging like this 6 foot Morgan.

If I'm not mistaken, there are two "Young Indy Whips" accounted for - one in the Lucas Archives and one still in posession of Elstree Props. The "Elstree" appears to be much longer than the "Lucas". Just as with the other Indy whips, it would make sence that there were several lengths to work with.

By the way the whip looks great and I for one would love to add one to the collection to hang in the boxcar we're fixing up for the '07 FL Summit.

Rick, you're right. From what I have heard, there was an eight footer hanging on the wall. Due to space restrictions and River Phoenix's inexperience with a whip, he used the six footer to crack the whip.

It is pretty easy to see that there are two complete coils of the whip right where the coils come back to meet the handle, not including the fall being coiled up over the post. It takes an eight footer to have two coils and hang like that. Definitely an eight footer on the wall. I also believe the legend to be true that River cracked a six footer. There is reportedly two whips in existence that were used in that scene, and they had a reason to use two whips. I believe it.

In the screen shot there are definitely more coils ( as well as the shadow) - it's especially easy to make out near the handle transition

Fair enough, I stand corrected. I had a really hard time seeing the other coil in that picture so I pulled out the Last Crusade DVD and watched that scene frame by frame, sure enough that bullwhip hanging on the wall was an 8ft whip. So it looks like we indeed have at least two young Indy whips to deal with, the 6ft shown in the Archives and the 8 ft version hanging on the train wall. Makes sense as the prop guys always have more then one item on hand and backs up the story of River cracking a 6 ft bullwhip. Good catch and thanks.

First off, my hat is off to Bernardo....That's a mighty fine lookin' whip ya got there....

Now, on the issue of the coils of the whip on the train wall....I remember early last year when Elstree did an eBay auction, selling that whip. If my memory serves me correctly, they said that this 8-footer they were auctionioning off was indeed the whip seen hanging on the wall (the implication being that a shorter whip, a 6-footer, was the whip we see being cracked). That answer the question?

Chris, Here is a photo of that 8 ft bullwhip Elstreet Studios was auctioning off last year, it’s the one they claimed was used in train car scene in the Last Crusade. It looks like a differnt bullwhip.

After seeing the pics of the coiled 8 footers that Bernardo posted, and taking another look at the pic of the whip from the movie, I was mistaken it is definitely an 8 foot. The shadows really throw it off.

I think it's great we've found that we can choose between a 6 ft or 8 ft Young Indy whip, and still being screen accurate.

I've been figuring out a special price for all Indy gear fans, and here it is:

8 ft $ 260

Then again, heaven only knows what it's been subjected to over the years in storage. Or it could have just been that pic was taken at a bad angle that didn't show enough of the details....Who knows?

I am very surprised at the condition of the Elstree whip. I remember being disappointed when I saw that picture when they were auctioning it off.

It has not recieved very good care over the years, and it seems to actually have some mold on it. I would think that they would try to clean it up and have it look good, before trying to sell it. If that is what it looks like after they cleaned it up, I would hate to have seen it before. Ooooh, yuck.

However, I do believe that it could be the whip from that scene. If you look closely, you can just tell that the handle is a slightly different color than the rest of the whip. If is was really cleaned up, would the handle's red color return? Who knows. If the red section of the whip was dyed or painted in some fashion, I suppose it is possible for that red to have faded.

Well, enough bashing of the original screen used whip. Bernardodc, that is a beautiful whip. It is a perfect replica of the whip we saw in the film. It would make a great addition to any Indy fan's collection.

Chris, No problem on the picture, it is kind of taken at an award angle but I’ve seen a couple other pictures of that whip and seems like a different style bullwhip all together. Its built more like a swivel handle whip, with a bit wider plaiting then the Morgan “style” bullwhip shown on the wall of the train car. The resolution was a bit worse on the others, but it I'll see if i can find those pictures again.

I was pretty disappointed with that Elstree bullwhip too when I seen it; It didn't look in the best of shape though Sometimes leather, whips included will get a white powdery looking coating on them if they have been in storage for a while or exposed to temperature extremes. Sometimes it’s mistaken as mold or mildew, but it is actually just leather spew. It occurs when the plaiting soaps and leather dressings work their way out of the leather over time and form white powdering or crusty coating on top of the leather. It can be easily whipped off and does not harm the leather like mold or mildew.

Bernardo, you really did do a great job on that bullwhip, I’ve showed those pics of it to some acquaintances and they where impressed as well. Time for some of you other whip makers out there to step up and see what you can do with the young Indy bullwhip!
