Darkening/aging leather - how?

How do I darken/age leather without making a mess that will rub off, or dirty clothing and furniture, or weaken the material?

This is not for a coat, BTW, this is for some leather trimming on a repro WWII shoulder bag.

Here is how I darkened my holster some time ago;

You could even buy leather coloring stuff and do it that way with good result.
Mine turned out great after taking the Zippo to it. ;)

Thanks for this info too... My jacket & Aldens were looking a bit off colour after some distressing...
