During my short time in the army 69-70. Many of the guys carried a type of Gladstone bag made out of a heavy pleather. Odd the way the army kept this bag shape.
I remember buying three of them and they came to about $10. I still have two that I store geologist tools in.
The soldiers would use these for a weekend pass or to carry the overflow from the duffle bag. I love the looks of a real, vintage Gladstone. But I must admit that when I see them I get Dejavu. Nothing pleasant either.
It is amazing how we or I relate so many items to events. The bad part is that it very often is not a pleasant event.
Human nature
Best regards,
Prof. Ed

Gladstone bag
Can I come on as the pedantic Englishman and point out that none of the bags pictured in this thread are true Gladstone bags?
Sure, Jump right in!
Especially if you can provide pictures or a decent description of what would constitute the correct article.
And oh yes, welcome to the forum!

This from Merrium Webster.Main Entry: glad·stone
Pronunciation: 'glad-"stOn, chiefly British -st&n
Function: noun
Usage: often capitalized
Etymology: W. E. Gladstone
: a suitcase with flexible sides on a rigid frame that opens flat into two equal compartments -- called also gladstone bag
But it's all academic because, in common usage, these oversized Doctor's bags are now known as "Gladstones." And, as any linguist worth his salt will tell you: nothing so defines a word as its common usage.
