Trying to track down a Particular whip, need assistance
Hey everybody,
There was a whip in the for sale section a long while back. I don't remember who was selling it or who bought it, and I don't have the old PM's anymore, but I do know it was bought by someone on COW.
It's a David Morgan 6ft Indy.
If the person who sold it, or the person who bought it, or someone who knows either of them sees this message could you please contact me.
Thanks,
Paul Nolan

Hi Paul,
That looks an awful lot like a 6 footer I made some time back for Sergei. Maybe he can chime in on it if he still has it. The fall material looks darn familiar. But, as you say, it's a Morgan, so never mind. I just remember having trouble picking it out of his bag, next to his Morgan, and being able to tell it was mine.
Anyway, good luck in your search.
Best Regards,
Paul Stenhouse

Hey Paul,
I'm positive that it wasn't Sergei who was selling it, but I would love to see a picture of the one you made for him.
And who know's it could be this is the same one, maybe Sergei sold it to the guy who was selling this one. The seller said it was a morgan, and because it looks like his work I assumed it was, but then again, I've seen some of your indy whips that I thought were morgans until the owner said it was made by you. So you never know.
I do hope someone recognises it and I can track down the previous and/or current owner.
By the way, how's New Zealand? I'm extreemely jelous!!!

Paul Nolan

Hi Paul,
Since it's your thread, I'll hijack it!
New Zealand's a great place to be. I really love it here, and the scenery is utterly beautiful. What ***** is that I have to have a real job, as I'd love to go and play every day. Some things to note about it are;
driving on the left side
saltwater fishing requires no license
deer, pig, and goat can be hunted year round without a license, and there's no limit.
Kiwi's speak a lot faster than most Americans, and have slang for many things (they also infantalize many words, too).
One drawback I've noticed is that Kiwis haven't built their houses to withstand the weather. I've been in 25+ countries, and this is the first one I've seen that doesn't match up. Oh well, the wife and I are going to fix that!
I wake up in the morning and can see the ocean. I almost bought a house on a bluff overlooking the sea, but was outbid for it. I'm going to get my little slice of paradise here, and put down roots for about 20 years!
Best Regards,
Paul Stenhouse

Hey Paul,
It sounds great!!! just like I imagine it.
I'm glad your enjoying it! So I guess your not coming back to the states ever again, eh?
It's too bad you were outbid on that house on the bluff, it sounds beautiful! What are you doing until you find your little slice of paradise? A hotel?
Also, I completely forgot why you moved there, I feel like an idiot! What was the reason?

Hi Paul,
I moved here to get away from the American way of life, to be honest. I wanted a slower pace, and a nice place to raise children. I didn't care for the way my tax monies were spent, and I voted with my feet. Never thought of myself as a political activist, but rather, I'd just quitely bow out of the situation. I feel as though I've paid my dues to society, and spent time in the military to be able make these comments.
I don't think I'll be coming back any time soon!
Currently, we are renting an amazing piece of #### house that is very cold at night, has no insulation, and sits behind a hill so that it gets no evening sun. We're looking, though, and we'll find something, I'm sure.
I'm thinking about the whip trade in New Zealand. I know that stockwhips were used for sometime, but I'll be hard pressed to find some history about it. Funny enough, Angie and I looked at a house this evening, and the woman had a stockwhip hanging in the hallway! No idea who made it, but I may be able to get my hands on it.
I've got some pretty awesome photos that I'd send you if you give me your home e-mail address. I'm not that smart when it comes to 'perputers!'

Paul S,
I know that you and I have had our disagreements in the past but I want you to know that I'm pleased you are happy in New Zealand. What I like about your decision to move is that your actions were driven by your principles. I have the highest respect for you because of that.
I hope that our paths cross again and if they do that time will have healed any old wounds. I wish you the best.

Kyle,
Thanks for your candor and your thoughts. Things I will definitely consider.
So, does anyone know anything about the whip trade in NZ?
Paul, I click on your www link, and get the temporary place holder for your site. What, are you busy making whips or something?
And where is Sergei these days? If he's got that whip I made for him, he could snap a photo for comparison.

Hi Paul,
I too admire your reasons on moving to New Zealand, and am a bit jelouse that you are so much closer to many of the great whipmakers!
That's too bad about the house you are renting, and I hope it doesn't get too bad as I believe you're just getting into winter. I hope you find what your looking for soon.
I wish I could help you about the history and whip trade in New Zealand, but I don't really know anything about NZ. Just Australia. You should get in contact with Peter Jack, as I believe he knows quite a bit about the history of the New Zealand Whip trade in use and making. And on top of that it would be awesome to get to visit Peter's shop, or perhaps do some work with him, or atleast see him work. If you do, take lots of pics as I'd love to see and hear all about it!
That's cool that there was a stockwhip in the house you went to look at, you should get a picture of that if you can for sure!
I'd love to see those photos, you can send them to midwestwhips@yahoo.com
yeah, unfortunately(and fortunately I suppose) I haven't finished it yet, I was working on it quite a bit durning january and february, but I've had to put it off for a little bit again due to excess work, taxes, and preparing for the upcoming WWAC convention. Hopefully I can get it done soon. It's just so hard to do as I am the same way with the website as I am with making whips, a perfectionist.
CALLING SERGEI!!! Where are you???

Paul Nolan

Hi Paul,
I've spoken with Peter Jack on the phone for a brief bit but the young'un was in desparate need of attention so I had to bugger off. He's about 3 hours north of me, and I plan to get up and see him some day. I'm curious to find where he gets his skins, and how the quality is. I'll ship out some photos to you directly.
I took a few whips in today to a local leather shop, and am going to see about consigning a few through them. They've got an old whip on the wall, which is an Aussie bullwhip. Looks a lot like the one Indy is using in the promotional poster. You know, the one that doesn't look at all like a Morgan? I offered to fix the end of it. I think I'll try to get ahold of the owner and see what he knows about NZ and whips. Peter ought to know something as well.
Don't bite your knuckle too hard with jealousy!

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the photo's!!! Absolutely beautiful!
I'm sure you'll end up spending some more time talking with peter, and it also seems that you're already picking up the slang
)
And yeah I need to watch the Jelous knuckle biting, I don't want it to affect my work,
Let me know how it goes when you get to meet up with peter or find out anything about the NZ whip history. And if Peter is cool with it, I'd love to see a bunch of photos of his shop and his work!

I've been biting my knuckles with jealousy since I heard you were moving to NZ. The beautiful country; the fact that you can bring up the subject of a whip with someone and not get that strange look from them. Plus, the chance to go and sit in Peter Jack's shop and talk whips with him! I remember what a privilege it was to sit and talk with Mike Murphy a few years ago at the WWAC, picking up some tips and hearing his stories. I'm sure the 3 hour trip will be well worth it.
Best regards,
Jim
