Fedora Question

Post by Toldog07 »

If the Herbert Johnson fedora is THE fedora, the one he actually wore in the films, how come so many of you die hard fans are getting fedoras made by other hatters? is the original not good enough or is there something im missing?

The reason many, if not most of us buy hats other than HJ's is because they are not the hats they once were. In addition to that, they are also using a different block to make the hat than they did back when Raiders was made. So in short, there are more accurate and better quality hats on the market. If you do some searching you will find all kinda of info about this.

Oh, welcome aboard! :D

Is it me, or do we have an influx of newbies all of a sudden? If so, that's great! We always like to see newcomers here, so welcome!

Toldog07, if you use the search function and do a little rooting around, you should find plenty on the subject. Still, Herbert Johnson still has the name going for it, which attracts many Indy fans. However, as stated above, for a multiple number of reasons, HJ isn't the company they once were. In the attempts to find the perfect Indy fedora, many folks here have talked with various hatters in order to replicate "the" hat. Offerings like the Akubra Federation and Federation Deluxe, Peters Brothers Indy hats, Lee Keppler's Indy fedora, Optimo's Indy, etc., have had various levels of input from die-hard fans in order to replicate the hat. Still, other fans who have never been totally satisfied with these offering for one reason or another have gone on to make their OWN hats, hence the AdventureBilt and the Camptown.

There are a LOT of offerings for an Indy fedora these days. Sometimes it seems overwhelming! If you are after the hat because of the name, then there is no shame in getting a modern Herbert Johnson. If you're after a hat which looks like what you see on screen and/or can withstand true adventures, then there are other good options around. Either way, do your homework, don't be afraid of the search button, and be less afraid to ask questions! Good luck!

This is just my opinion, but I was'nt too impressed with the HJ from

Todd's Costumes. It cost about the same as an AB , but the quality

was'nt near as good. Don't forget about the Peters Bros custom

Indy either, for about 185. Welcome aboard! The people here are

terrific! :D

Just don't plan on wearing it in the rain, as the Todd website says. I wear my Adventurebilt in all kinds of weather with no ill effects at all. Also, from Adventurebilt, you can get a 100% pure beaver, the best fur for fur felt hats, for the same price you get a rabbit hat from Herbert Johnson. THe choice, at least to this humble fedora wearer, is clear...KC

Welcome Toldog07. You will find as many opinions and proponents as you will find fedoras!!

Do not be in a rush to buy anything. Do the research and work within your budget.

I should add the Akubra Federation Deluxe is a great hat for the money.....

If you want pure beaver, I'd go with my hat, the Cairo from Lee Keppler (www.adventuresupply.com). If you want a great hat but aren't set on the best possible felt, go Adventurebilt. If you want a hat that you can fix up yourself, go Akubra Federation Deluxe.

Oh... and welcome aboard from another relatively new guy!

Um, I think you have that mixed up, my friend. The AdventureBilt is only made from 100% pure beaver felt and can be supplied shaped or open crowned (shape it yourself) with no difference in cost. The Keppler is a beaver mix, but unless something has recently changed, it is not 100% beaver felt. You can get this hat shaped or not, too. The Akubra comes open crowned only. All of these hats are great hats, with the quality in materials ranking from highest to lowest: AdventureBilt, Keppler, Akubra.
