Crown too tall?

Hey folks... Ren here.

My buddy Denny (a modern day Wu Han) and I were talking Vintage and he was telling me that the Raiders fedora is an 1/8th of an inch too tall. I make the arguement that no crown can be too tall.

Work with me, am I right?

You are right. No crown can be too tall.

Btw, where did he get that 1/8 of an inch number? Sounds a bit precise...

I have seen blocks used for fedoras than ran from 5 inches to 6 inches. So...........take his drink from him and show him the bed.

Suggest instead that his face is 1/8" too short. Plastic surgery can fix that, a chin job is hardly noticable after a year, and he shouldn't be ashamed of his little chin. Sympathize w/ the man, he has chin envy, and has misplaced it into thinking the hats are to blame.

Well, we know from the Indiana Jones Bonus Materials DVD that the crown was said to be too high for a conventional fedora.

But that was what Steven and the costumer wanted: a hat style that would be instantly recognizable and distinctive at first glance. A hat with a shorter crown would not have had as much of a visual impact.

You know, recently I've been feeling that my AB is just slightly too high for me. I've noticed that the I think the HJ I got fits my facial proportions better. I think I'll take pics and start a new thread, maybe with a poll.

Keep in mind the times they spoke this in. When they say, "too high for a conventional fedora..." that could mean most brimmed hats circa 1981! Because fedora wear was uncommon in the 80's, anything slightly higher would look out of place.

Indy's hat is not uncommon for the period he wore it in. It was very recognizable for the time they made the movie.

Maybe he was looking in the mirror and didn't like what he saw!!! Maybe it is too tall for him? Could be....

I think it depends on the wearer. I believe there is a direct relation to crown height and shoulder width. It has something to do with balancing out the head to the shoulders.

Just my thoughts.

Hmm...okay, I'll bite...let's go see...okay, this is the best I could slap together in a hurry. I was hoping you'd hit upon a 'Da Vinci-an' harmony of some sort, but the shoulders, brim tips, and crown tips don't fall in a straight line. But the do seem to vary by a uniform amount in each uniform pic he's taken.
