What do you put in the small pocket of the Mk VII?
There's that small pocket on top of the flat pockets. Very small...what was the original purpose of it, and what do you guys put in it? I tried a ZipLight, but it pops out too easily. Anyone?

I keep a sharpener for my lead holders in there.

You don't want to be in the middle of a project and have only dull lead.

We are talking about the really dinky 2 inch deep pocket, right?
I've only been able to get pills to stay in there. Since it doesn't close, the only thing that stays in is like a sheet of the blister-packed cold medicine pills - I just fold it up and stick it in. The stuff wants to unfold, so it stays jammed in the pocket.
But you reminded me of something...that little pocket in mine has a small metal eyelet near the top. I always thought it was for hooking on something you didn't want lost, but probably the point of having it on that pocket was so that a string anchored to the back wall just above the pocket could be threaded through this to tied the little pocket shut.
Swindiana would probably be able to shed some light on this...Swindiana?
(Best guess, a small can of defogger fit in the pocket. But it's just a guess.)

Hey, even if it is in need of an update, www.IndyGear.com is still chock full of great info and pics. I think every one on COW tends to forget that.

Everything pops out too easlily from that poket! Your question was also in an old thread but also in the old thread we didnt find a real solution to this question... nothing useful anywayArizonaBones wrote:There's that small pocket on top of the flat pockets. While we are on the subject, here is what I did to create an additional pocket, some like it, some don't;

That is a good idea. I prefer films myself for cameras instead of memory sticks but ... digital cameras are sooooooo easy sometimes... expecially to post pics on cow!IndyJens wrote:If I use the MK as "camera bag", I put an additional film into that small pocket (yes, I'm an old-fashioned analog-camera guy,; like celluloid (sp?) more than digital photography).

Holding something you never use is a perfect use of a pocket that nothing will fit!Sheffield Jones wrote:I keep a compass in mine(Never had to use it,but I keep it in there anyway). It fits perfect.
Are you kidding, Swindy? I always thought that was a great idea - especially since so many folks were cutting out the dividers anyway! I can see people just not doing it, but actually DISLIKING it? (P.S. Still haven't gotten around to trying that idea I was telling you about. Maybe now that I'm thinking about gear again I'll take a shot at it. Yes, SLOW-ER than molasses. Hey, at least I never run out of things to do. )

Jerrry, the hole usually has a long string attatched to it. On the oriiginal straps, there weere two loops opposite of one aanother, one a rounded piecee of thickk string, the other a piece of metal with a hole in it. The string was fed through these and then pulled tight, keeping anything inside froom falling out.

Having trouble w/ the visual on that one...strings on what original straps? Anyway, it does sound like it was for tieing it shut...okey doke, I'll wait until someone clever like Swindy posts a pic of this...(hint!).IllinoisJones wrote:Jerrry, the hole usually has a long string attatched to it. Well... The eyelet you are talking about was to anchor the anti dimming case with a piece of string to prevent it from being lost. (A snap closure pocket is the equivalent on most Canadian bags.) Equally common is to just have a looped string that would do the same trick, fastened to a string which in turn was fastened to the lid of the case.
The eyelet feature can be seen in LC as the cross is removed from Indy's bag onboard the ship right after the "young Indy" sequence.
Not sure what Illinois is saying though.
Do you mean the strap loops as seen here and here?
And then the buckle loops?
Regards,
Swindiana

My WPG bag doesn't have the divider, or that handy-looking snap closure pocket. That divider seems like it would be pretty useful to me, since it seems like I am always pulling half the contents out to find what I am looking for. What is the objection to the divider?Indiana Jerry wrote:Holding something you never use is a perfect use of a pocket that nothing will fit!Sheffield Jones wrote:I keep a compass in mine(Never had to use it,but I keep it in there anyway). It fits perfect. Are you kidding, Swindy? I think I may have to round up one of the Canadian bags!

I haven't seen ANY bags WITHOUT the divider (unless removed)...wasn't it to hold the respirator can upright? It was a basic part of the design...if yours doesn't have it, it sounds like someone already removed it.
Or is yours actually a repro someone made without?
EDIT: Oh, right, the WPG...it doesn't have a divider???

Nope, no divider. So it isn't an exact reproduction, apparently! Does anyone else's WPG bag have the divider?Indiana Jerry wrote:I haven't seen ANY bags WITHOUT the divider (unless removed)...wasn't it to hold the respirator can upright? Shoot, guess I'll have to round up a genuine bag sometime. Add that to the list....

I've got something in mind regarding experimenting w/ the divider, an idea Swindy got me thinking of, whether he realizes or not...but I think I may have to pick up a cheap old MKVI to experiment on, in case it doesn't come out like I think - because I really do love the divider! It holds up my coffee mug!

The divider was left out of the WPG repo bag because every one was just cutting them out anyway.Indiana Jerry wrote:

Some one correct me if I'm wrong, but the divider on the real bag does not extend all the way to the bottom of the bag.

That is true. It only goes down three inches or so, and then the bottom three inches or so are open. So it really is still just one big pocket, but w/ this partial divider from about the middle to the top.Serial Hero wrote:Some one correct me if I'm wrong, but the divider on the real bag does not extend all the way to the bottom of the bag.
Again, ideal for keeping my travel mug upright, but if you put change in both sides of the main pocket, the are still all just together in a pile at the bottom.
Brilliant...simply brilliant!Swindiana wrote:I just fill mine right up with glue. Hardly ever falls out.Indiana Jerry wrote:A ball of Gummie bears. They'll stick anywhere.
