I just received the same shirt ... Just wondered if/how much it shrank and/or lightened, etc. ...

I have washed it twice since I got it. Actually this is the second shirt. The first one I had was washed right away because is had a bit of a smokey odor to it.

Washed it, put it in the dryer and had a few stitches pop, and edges fray.

So I let Jerry know & showed him some pics of what happened and he promptly sent me a new shirt and asked me to keep the first one to evaluate further washing damage.

The second one, like I said has been washed twice but I hang dry it. Drys pretty quick, and so far no damage.

So, Spookey I would wash & hang dry only. This will reduce the shrinkage factor. I had ordered the sleeve length 1" longer than I usually get because of the shrinkage issues I had read about. So far the sleeves are plenty long and it stays tucked in. Oh, and keep an eye on the stitching on the back pleat.
So far I have been quite happy with Jerry's customer service. I am sure he has heard the complaints and is working with other COW members to correct any future problems.

Ditto on WPG Customer Service:
My first WPG shirt had rust stains of some kind on it - Jerry sent me a replacement immediately (and I returned the stained one).

Dan,
The body looks great. And overall, the shirt looks pretty good. The sleeves however look awfully long and baggy, though the bagginess is in the cut. You might want to consider putting it in the dryer to shrink it down a bit.

This is meant as constructive criticism, of course. Your shirt looks much better on you than mine does on me.

I agree with you also about Jerry's customer service: top notch. If there is a problem, he will fix it.

Thank you sir. You are a gentleman and a scholar. The fit of the shirt is a bit baggy but I'm afraid to put the thing in the dryer and get too much shrinkage. I had requested the second shirt that Jerry set to have a 36" sleeve because the 35" shrank way up in the dryer. So when I extended my arms I looked like an orangatan in a dress shirt. The longer sleeves I can deal with by tightening up the cuffs with an extra button. I never could understand when they make a shirt like this that they assume with a 17" neck that you have the wrists of a gorilla. Oh well, that is why I took home ec. in junior high so many years ago. So I can fix my own clothing. I will be taking it to a taylor to take the sides in to reduce the reverse taper. Bring the the the sides down straight so to speak so I don't look like I shop at Omar the tent maker when the shirt is untucked.
And thanks for the consrtuctive comments. What would offend me would kill most people.

For a cheap and accurate Indy shirt i suggest looking to Army Surplus. They are hard wearing too! Mine is a Mans Tropical Shirt. Whatever that means. Lol, i only care that it looks accurate!

I have the wpg as well and it is far to big for me(I'm of wiry build and the shirt is made for "full-bodied" people).Tthe smallest size was still about two inches too long on the sleeves. I shrank it as much has it would go (hot wash, hot rinse, straight in the dryer on high) the sleeves came out perfect. I've sent it to the tailors to be taken in I'll post pics as soon has I can. I like the color and the wrinkled look it gets if you don't press it. very Indy. a grest shirt at a better price than the wested I still want to get the wested, and also have one custom made. then compare them all to the movies.

Has anyone compared the WPG shirt side by side with the Wested? The WPG is definitely more screen accurate in the details, but the Wested shirt has a more accurate ROTLA color on my PC than the WPG. Jerry says his shirt is light khaki, but the pix on his website have a color more like Cabela's Stone safari shirts. Anyone got the straight scoop? BTW, if you live in a moderate sized city (250K-400K) good chance there's a custom shirtmaker in it. In Tampa, FL a tailor-made shirt, your choice of color and fabric, is about $95 plus 7.5% tax. Just take'em a photo of the style and the tailor will make one that is a perfect fit for you.

From information I got on this site, it appears the best thing to do with WPG shirts is to hot water wash them a couple times to get them to fit better. That is what I did and after inspection to see if the seams, buttons and material held up (which it did) . I must admit the shirt fits much better now.

When I use to do 18th century reenacting we had to hot wash the material before the group sewed the material into shirts for the unit.
This was done so the material would not shrink when washed.

Adam: No, it's not you. The cuffs are quite large. Basically the shirts are made for every-man. Although my arm length may be close to an orangatan I do not possess their wrist girth. Since that photo was taken I have added an extra button to the cuffs to tighten them. They fit much better now.

IndianaRedmond: Unfortunately the old hot water trick shortens the shirt when it shrinks, it doesn't shrink the width or cuff size. Such was my case.Also, I don't think that this material was washed in hot water prior to sewing. I know my mom, back in the day, had done this to all the material when she used to make clothing. Even now when I sew my own shirts, I follow her lead and wash the material prior to sewing. But, the Pakistani's who sewed these shirts didn't follow this common knowledge.

Oh well. They are still a nice shirt, and like I stated above, they are built for every-man. So we must taylor them to fit our own unique body types.
