Bag and Mask

Post by Ark Hunter »

So how many people actually got a gas mask (or other accesories) with thier MKVII bag? (or other MK bag).

I just got a original bag (with mask and accsories) but it's not a MKVII. Infact I'm not sure what version it is. It is stamped 1941, but I can't find any MK mark. There's a long number also. I'll try and post pictures. It's got a second back flap with thin pockets which a screw lid can with the Anti-Dimming cloth MKVI and eyeshields one box marked MKIII. Cool mask and the bag is pretty neat though not the screen accurate version. (maybe more correct period though if it's an earlier version?) I like the secondary flap with thin pockets. They would be good for a moleskin notebook or map or something.

It sounds like a MKVI. WARNING! DO NOT PUT THE MASK ON! Those old filters contain asbestos! (read 'carcinogenic', cancer causing).

have a nice day.

Ah!

Mask: Mk V
Filter: Type E Mk VI
Bag: Mk VI

Service number:
Depending on if that digit is an old 5 or a B, it served in either the Royal Army Service Corps or the Royal Corps of Signals.

:D

I would LOVE some shots of the accesories if possible. (Instructions still in there?)

So is it bad if we're carrying a pack of gum or breath mint strips around in our bags?

Are you saying that it would be better to let them walk around fat, dumb, and happy wearing their new gas mask until they die? :-k #-o

Yeah, got it from ebay for about $40. ErriWan

I can get some more shots for you Swindiana. (after I get back in town...I'm visiting family) What are you looking for specificly? I don't think there's any instructions for using the mask. There's some instructions on the anti-diming tin and the eye sheields though.

Is asbestos THAT bad? Like you breath it once and could get cancer? I thought it was long/extended exposure.

Well yes i think it's just for long exposures, nothing can cause the cancer in few seconds except maybe a very high intensity of electromagnetic waves at hight intensity (aka radiations), but they should be very high... like touching uranium with your hands..

anyway please someone reassure me about the safety of the bags! i put also food in them sometimes

It only takes one particle of asbestos erri-wan. It can sit in your lungs for 40 years before it does anything. It's expected it will be the plague of the baby-boomer generation soon. (I hope 'baby-boomer' isn't an Australian only term). They've already started taking asbestos related illnesses out of life insurance policies here, because they anticipate there will be so many. Sad.

Merrick nailed it. My dad had two tumors in his lungs when they detected them - the larger one was lung cancer. The smaller one was formed around a particle of asbestos. How many did he come in contact with before one settled in his lungs? Who knows for sure, really, but the point is it only took that one to form a tumor.

The 'good' news (notice 'good' is relative here) was that one was easier to reduce, but it still took chemo...and not everyone survives the treatment.

Better to scare a few folks than to be complacent and let someone else take the chance.

Thanks, Doc.
A shot of the instructions mentioned would be great, and one underneath the filter, plus a shot inside and one under the "jaw" of the mask, if there are any markings.
No rush though. ;)

Thanks!

It seems most of the bags that people get hold of these days have not had a mask and filter inside them while being stored for 60 years, so the filter was likely to be undamaged and leak-proof while being used, not letting its contents out. To be on a safer side, I'm not saying safe, I'd give the bag a wash to get rid of any unwanted particles. Asbestos in itself is not poisonous, it's the shape of the fibers/particles that makes it so bad to inhale, sticking to lung tissue forever. Not saying you should eat it either...

The point is, I'm not worried about it, but it is for each and everyone to decide for themselves. After all, the WPG replica is out there, and that's great.

I find this post pretty resourceful when it comes to asbestos used in some of the old filters;

Except in a survival situation... or breakfast. Bring worchester sauce and some pork chops -it's a meal. 8)

Oh, and one doesn't have to inject to be a bag junky anyway. Dangerous stuff. ;)
