Nylon/ 5-50 cord?

Post by bandit6 »

Ok i have some whip making books and seen some thread here on nylon whips. Are you guys talking about 5-50 cord or para cord? I want to make a Indy whip and here we have 5-50 cord by the spools. I just dont know where to start. Also if it is the stuff I am thinking of, do you gut the 7 strands on the inside? I got 4 more months here in Afghanistan and I have read all my books and watched all the movies that we have. Thought I might try to make a whip. Thanks.

I can offer this: http://www.dittmer.ca/whips/supplies.html

I'll also PM you with Lash Dittmer's address, perhaps her can tell you where he got the cord to make my snakewhip.

550 cord or parachute cord are both names for the military issue green cord. There is a cheaper version out there with a bunch of dacron strands inside instead of the 7 separate cords, but either one will work.

You'll get a flatter, smoother braid if you take the inner strands out. I tried one a few months ago when I was stationed in Africa and it came out OK, but I prefer leather. Another reference I found useful for nylon whip construction is http://www.dallasdogsled.com/Whips/CowWhip.htm

Stay safe over there, and happy whipmaking.
