Indy 'on a shoe-string' bullwhip (now in brown!)

Here's a brown one that can be had for $50. After this one, all Indy-on-a-budget bullwhips will be $60 plus shipping, regardless of color.

Here's some pics of a new design of whip that I'm trying out. After reading a few posts about people looking for a relatively inexpensive whip that would look good with an Indy costume, I decided to make something that I felt would fit the bill.

This whip is made with an 8" spike handle and a lead-shot core. A bolster of heavy cowhide goes over the core, followed by a four-plait cowhide overlay. It is carefully weighted and tapered to crack loudly and easily.

I also took care to give the handle the look of an Indy whip with wrist loop and the oversized knob. The second picture compares the Indy 'on a shoestring budget' bullwhip handle with the handle of an Indy bullwhip that I made recently from kangaroo.

If I can figure out how to do it, I'm going to list this whip in the IndyGear classifieds with a price of $40.

Now that's an Ideal Indy whip for Indy on a budget, or a starter whip, heck, I can remember starting out on a simple four plait swivel handled bullwhip, (as I'm sure many of you did)which was built with a straw belly inside, or the like, that whip lasted me for what seemed like ages and was put through the wringer,

Adams whip looks to be about a 100 times better built, along with being Indy correct, a definite plus.

That whips looks pretty cool for the price! Being in high school, it's probably better to get a cheaper whip, knowing my friends, who would want to try it out (and I definitely wouldn't let them touch a $100+ whip)
I'm definitely game for that whip...if only it came in tan/brown.

:idea: Adam, you'll be sainted. An 'entry level' whip for Indy-On-A Budget!

$40 would be truly amazing. I'm assuming that the color choice would be driven by availability of colors in whatever leather you are choosing for economical purposes, so I'd understand completely if you had a price hike for a more accurate color. Even if you had to, I'd still suggest you offer the cheaper variant for those just looking for the in.

It would be great to have this cheaper variation! Even the EC budget whips aren't that cheap...I've been looking for such an accurate whip for below $100.

Adam, do you think a tan/brown one would cost much more than the black shoe-string budget one?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I know that black would be cheaper than tan, I'm just saying Adam might be getting the price down for folks like you and I by using a good grade leather he can get at a low price - since the price is the driving consideration here, you have to understand the choices may be limited.

Me? All I know about leather is it tastes good...ew...sorry, I was trying to think up some way of saying I'm just typing here, I'm not an expert on leather.

Adam's doing a service trying to get a low price here, so don't give him grief if it turns out that limits the choices. That's all I meant to say.

I have one whole brown cowhide and a few smaller pieces that I could use to put together a new Indy 'on a shoe-string budget' bullwhip (shorter name pending).

The $40 price is for black or dark brown. The one pictured is dark brown. A medium brown bullwhip would be $50. I'll make one today and post some pictures later.

The leather I'm using is 5 oz. chrome tanned cowhide from Weavers. A customer of mine worked with me to develop a cowhide cow whip, of which he had several made and I took the rest of the hides as payment for the whips. Now I'm trying to find a way to use these heavier hides to make something that isn't as labor-intensive as my other whips. Most of the hides that I got in the deal are dark brown and black. To get more brown, beyond by limited supply, I would have to visit my leather dealer in Minnesota.

I'm still trying to figure out the best price for this whip. I'll make a brown one that can be had for $50, and after that I might set the price at $60, with a promise of no more price hikes.

HOKEY SMOKES, BULLWINKLE!!!! I should check the whip forum out more often!!! This may be my first whip, too! I am most certainly on a budget with everything and have wanted an Indy whip for a while, but the spare change has gone towards bills and hats. Also, not knowing if I'd end up getting into whip cracking (time and expense, much less a place to crack it) I had always feared I'd spend a lot of money on a "wall hanger." But for $50-$60, heck, I can squeeze that! If anything, it looks like it would be an ideal beginner's whip for me as well as a good costume piece!

How often are you making these, and how readily available is the brown? And how long are these whips?

Since I've decided to make whips full time now, my turnaround time is pretty fast. I had a good run of orders this summer but now things are slowing.

With some spare time, I've decided to develop new products and sell some whips on Ebay. Since there are quite a few guys making quality 'roo whips, I figured that I had better diversify my production line.

The two budget whips pictured are still available for the prices listed and can be shipped out immediately.

I crack my whips indoors all of the time! I've worked out this thing in my basement were I'll take a six-foot stockwhip and cut playing cards in half that I placed at the other end of the room.

This is an awesome service you're offering since I'm sure there are many Indygear-ers out there that don't want to spend $150-200+ on a whip not knowing if they'd like cracking a whip. Is this whip crackable in terms of weight distribution and balance or would one find it difficult to crack?

I cracked this whip today at our local Whip Enthusiast meeting and have to say it's not only a hearty whip, but boy does it crack! If you are on a budget and need a whip for your costume and want a whip that cracks (not those puny ebay kind that fall apart), then you definitely need to get this whip. I was highly impressed. It was probably the loudest whip I've cracked...no joke. If I wasn't saving up for my California trip next month, I might have considered getting it.

Well I broke the news to my wife that I've got the whip (shown at very top of the page) coming my way. When I told her how much a was paying for it, she gave me a surprised smile which told me that I did good on the purchase for the price! $\:D/$ Now, if I told her that I just paid a bunch of money on a much more expensive whip, then she might've ended up using it on me!

Now I don't have to worry about sneaking around with the whip.

(To be quite fair, my wife knows I never use bill money for purchases like this but instead use the cash I earn on the side as a musician or doing freelance design work. Even so, she likes that I usually keep the budgets in mind anyway. Besides, she's excited about the bed and breakfast I'm taking her to for our anniversary next week, so I'm in the clear on all sides!

Hah funny that i just got my SW trilogy set from the states last week, and just watched ESB over the weeekend. I left my Indy box and individual cases at home, and brought the dvds in a fat leather binder/case with all my games and other dvds. Otherwise I would display my indy and sw dvds together...

I cracked a Winrich OASB whip this weekend at the DFW Whip Weekend V.

It is heavy and that will give it some zap when throwing it. It's better than a whip that has no guts at all. For a beginner it's a good whip to start on.

I saw ITG, but missed Indiana Mikey as I was not there on Saturday. I wore my Indy gear on Sunday... fed, wested and everything else... I expected to see more COW members there, but I guess not that many are into whipcracking. I brought out many of my Indy bullwhips that I have to show along with a few others. Finally, I won the gold medal for winning the "Technicals" also known as the 10 trick routines and also won "most improved whipcracker"...

Well, I finally got a chance to crack it today, and wow. I did an overhead crack and it echoes down all the alleys. I practiced the forward crack. For some reason I got it down with my left hand, but my right hand (im a righty) can't get it everytime. Maybe my arm was just getting tired after doing it for an hour. I pecarded the fall afterwards, and I dapped a bit onto some small nicks near the end of the thong near the fall from when I started to do a forward crack, but realized I was on sandy area and not the grass...
It's fun having an audience. A few little kids and their dad were on the jungle gym on the other side of the park were watching me.

If you are etting a whipholder, i find that the todd holder isn't the most optimal but still works. i say that because the snap closure isn't too secure on such a heavy whip, and I found myself reclosing it sometimes 2day. I saw the one at whipartist.com and was considering that one for my whip. It looks more secure

The texas gear still uses only a single snap to keep it closed. I like the whip artist because it uses the aritificial bone to apply leverage to keep the the snap closed, even when running or jumping.

Well, my friends and i went out to the park today because the weather was so nice for once in Taipei, and since I was casually already in full gear we took some pictures.

Prepping for a forward crack....

Picking up momentum for an overhead....

And the follow through.....
This whip is definitely vey heavy. My arm was pretty sore by the end of the day, and I think I need to upgrade my whipholder, beecause the weight of it is making the todd's whipholder snap open when I walk.
Maybe we'll go take some more pics next week. I'll try to get some more interesting looking shots, some more indy-esque action shots.

That is actually called a "Rolla Bolla" Here's a picture of me earlier this year at a Cub Scout function when I was on the rolla bolla pretending in this shot that I was "surfing".

It was a bit slick doing it on wet pavement while it was raining and cracking the whip at the same time

Since Adam didn't mention it here, it can be made a foot longer for another $10. So, guess how long mine will be?

It's a beaut, Adam! I can hardly wait to try it out! The color is nice, too. It feels hefty, but like it will take a lickin.' I've never owned a whip before, so I'm excited to see what this whip cracking thing is all about. I'll let you know how it goes when I finally get a chance to try it out! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to see if whip cracking is for me, Adam. The price (and quality) was what made it possible for me right now. If I take to it, it just means that I'll have to save up for another whip from one of you other whip makers!

My arm was pretty sore by the end of the day

It took me about a month of cracking , 2 hours a day,
Before my muscles got used to it. Muscles are used in whipcracking
that arent really used in anything alse aside from arm wrestling.
