Re: Do The Movie Whip's Handles Taper out At The Keeper End?

Wow, I didn't realize Murphy's points were quite that small! I'll have fun doing some searches on here when I get a chance. I'll have to dig up the old correspondence I had with Paul and see what I can find as well.

Re: Do The Movie Whip's Handles Taper out At The Keeper End?

Snowy Baker sounds really familiar. I believe Paul told me this and I had just forgotten. As far as Will Rodgers, I was told by my Grandfather that my Great Grandfather James Scott and Will Rodgers were good friends. I guess my Great Grandfather had some sort of connections because I have a picture ...

Re: Do The Movie Whip's Handles Taper out At The Keeper End?

Author doesn't mind (grin). Hey Aldo, Hope you're still working on that whipmaking! Hope the earthquake wasn't too bad down there. I just heard about it. Dan, I think your speculations are about as accurate as we can ascertain. If you have the Kino version of Don Q. they have a bit of additional foo...

Re: Wested's HERO jacket...

Yeah it has too much shine. That was my first impression of it. And once I do get the jacket I will be keeping, I'll be working on dulling that in whatever way looks best. I'm sure it won't be hard to do. But the leather itself feels and looks up close like anything other than fake or plastic. It's ...

Re: Wested's HERO jacket...

Thanks. Yeah I see it's intentional because it's on all the hero jackets I've seen pictures of, so it must be a part of the pattern. Watching Raiders, the effect doesn't seem to be quite the same, but I don't mind it really. It's just different than what I'm used to. I just wish I had a jacket here ...

Re: Do The Movie Whip's Handles Taper out At The Keeper End?

Dan, I'm enjoying the discussion about Henderson. Perhaps you're right about Henderson's work being heavy. They certainly look aesthetic that way; I'm just not going to copy him on that level because I don't like the way heavy whips handle and that's important to me. But I love the look of those big...

Re: Wested's HERO jacket...

Holt, I hear what you're saying about the originals, but my jacket isn't cut that way from all I can tell. The neck is actually cut higher in the back than my old one, not lower. This makes the seams on the top of the shoulders' actually fall towards my back, not the front. It's sort of odd and to k...

Re: Wested's HERO jacket...

I don't mind the difference between front and back. It does seem more screen accurate. I just need a smaller jacket. I hope Wested writes me back soon. I'm anxious to get another and hope it's a perfect fit this time.

Re: Wested's HERO jacket...

Zip it up, lay it flat on a bed front up with sleeves flat and out to the sides. Measure the distance between the side seams across the front of the jacket from armpit to armpit.

For the shoulders, I did the same thing.

Re: Wested's HERO jacket...

Sorry, no pics. I still need to find time to set something up with photobucket or something. But pics will look just like the other ones recently in the forum. It's the same look. I'm returning this one anyway. Ok, jacket zipped up and laid flat on the bed. Armpit to armpit, seam to seam on my 40 is...

Re: Wested's HERO jacket...

I received my shrunken lamb hero jacket a few days ago. CRB's is an excellent representation of how it looks. The leather is awesome. I would say as far as screen accuracy goes, it's has the look but isn't truly accurate. It is more rugged looking and grainy than what I see on the screen. Compared t...

Re: Do The Movie Whip's Handles Taper out At The Keeper End?

Dan, It's definitely a compliment to say it looks like Chris Barr has influenced my work. His work is amazing, thanks. I have a day job, so I don't get the chance to do as much whipmaking as I'd like. Most of my orders are for 12 plait Indy bullwhips. As I get orders for the other stuff I get more p...

Dan, Thanks for posting those. Paul knows I'm a huge Henderson fan and so he generously sent me some pictures of the collection, but I haven't seen these pictures before. That bullwhip John's holding is simply huge!! I love the stockwhip you're holding there too. What a beaut! What a find to dig up ...

Re: Do The Movie Whip's Handles Taper out At The Keeper End?

Speaking of Henderson's work. This one's posted on the web already but it's too big on the size requirements to post here, so here's a link instead. One of my big challenges living up here in the boonies is that I only have dial-up internet. I have to crack my bullwhip to make the uploads go faster....

Re: Kid whip

I'm leaning towards the stockwhip idea at the moment just because it will be easier for a whip I can see now that' he'll abuse. But I've always specialized in bullwhips so it would be different than what he's used to. I actually use a spring transition that solves the breakdown problem, but it takes...

Re: Do The Movie Whip's Handles Taper out At The Keeper End?

Thanks gentlemen. You're awesome. Excellent and informative replies. I will definitely trust Dan's judgment with being able to measure a number of original screen whips. It doesn't get better than that!! What an awesome experience! Like whiskeyman, I have sort of stylized my interpretations of the w...

Do The Movie Whip's Handles Taper out At The Keeper End?

Maybe this has been discussed before. I'm a newbie here. I used to think that some of the TOD screen used bullwhips tapered up slightly at the end of the handle but that ROTLA and LC were typically untapered. Now I'm not sure that any of them taper at all. Yet I've been reading with interest on here...

Re: Kid whip

Riku, Hey thanks for the information on posting pictures. Very helpful. I was wondering how everyone was doing it. Bravo, Wow that whip is still a nice medium brown. I can't say much for my screen accuracy but it's a nice looking bullwhip. I'm making a Crusader in 16 plait right now, and have anothe...

Re: Cracking whips on dormant grass

Riku, I think if shellac is exposed to water for a period of time, it can eventually break down. As in it's not for waterproofing outdoor furniture or something. But for short term it's great. I also find it helpful on falls to tuffen them up and keep them from getting soaked, as they are the thing ...

Re: Cracking whips on dormant grass

I'd like to respectfully disagree with the idea that shellac doesn't waterproof. It's known as a tremendous sealer, that can even seal in odors on old furniture. I think what you are referencing is that since whips have plaits, the water can still get between them, even if not through the shellac. T...

Bravo,

Glad you like that whip. I remember it was saddle tan. I imagine it's probably started really darkening up by now. I'll remember to post pictures when I get it done. I just need to figure out how to post pictures here without hosting them for a url, if that's possible?

Re: Kid whip

Cute little whip! I have a short safe practice whip made of a rope with the pieces cut out of it at intervals, which my almost 3 year old son is practicing with every day. I told him if he practices hard I'd make him a bullwhip for his birthday, the end of this month. I drew up the plans the other n...

Re: Cracking whips on dormant grass

In my experience, cracking whips in the winter is no problem if they're treated right. The best thing I've found to keep a whip from wearing out under hard conditions is to regularly re-apply shellac to the thong. If the whip's been through some bad stuff, wash the thong well with soapy water and le...

Re: Wested's HERO jacket...

I think this is my first post on COW, unless I had an account years ago? I can't remember. Anyway, I've been around the Indy gear scene for many years as a whipmaker and nonslip holster maker. I just ordered the Wested Hero jacket in shrunken lamb. It's my birthday present from my wife. I can't beli...
