Re: Wings signature series size question?
Shootist, An XL sounds like it would be too big for you. I'm 180 pounds with a 42 chest and 36 waist. My size LARGE Import Legend is VERY roomy (on the verge of being too big). I'm 5'9" and 165-170 with a 43 chest, usually wear a 42 jacket and a medium shirt. 34" waist. I have a Legend L ...

Re: U.S. Wings Legend Imported vs. U.S.A. made?
the import leather is 'naked'...not suede, but that top of the skin has been removed, which gives it the 'distressed' look ; it has a 'soft' textured feel to it. I prefer the leather with the smooth finish better personally. As far as fit and finish, my import had no issues with stitching, but one ...

Re: U.S. Wings Legend Imported vs. U.S.A. made?
I must admit that I like the color in the picture of the import better than I like the color of this jacket. I am quite tempted to put something on this jacket which will darken it somewhat and maybe add some shine to it. I don't know if it will work. I tend to like a darker colored jacket. I tried ...

Re: Color transfer to cloth and other leather from Nowak Jac
You sure it's not the Obenauf's leather treatment transfering instead? :-k This is the first I've heard of any colors or dyes transferring from any TN jackets to date regardless of hide. Regards! Michaelson I'd think it very possible this is the likely culprit. Is this Obenauf's Oil or Heavy LP? I ...

Re: How much would Indy's jacket have cost in 1936?
Considering it was the height of the Depression, few had cars at that time. I guess it depended on where you were living at the time as to what you had, and what you didn't have. From stories my parents told me, they had one car between several families, one 'Sunday-go-to-meeting' suit, and a semi-...

Re: How much would Indy's jacket have cost in 1936?
So, in the end, I would say we have concluded a jacket like this, made by a medium to large company would cost between $5 and $10. Custom fitted perhaps a couple of dollars more. Overall our purchasing power today is far better than it was then. Most especially in consumable goods, clothing, food, h...

Re: U.S. Wings Legend Imported vs. U.S.A. made?
I just bought one of the imports. The leather is very high quality. The construction is pretty good. I wouldn't say incredible. I do like the durability and texture of the steerhide. The color is nice, but does not have luster. I think that was their exact intent with this particular model. Somethin...

Re: Anyone else experience this with their leather jackets?
I will add that this is assuming the leather is only wet. If it dirty with mud, then that should be cleaned off first. Nothing kills leather faster than dried mud. Just like dirty hands dry your hands out very quickly, dirty leather dries out quickly. It pulls all of the natural oils out of the leat...

Re: Anyone else experience this with their leather jackets?
If leather becomes truly soaked through it is best to apply a conditioner like Pecards or Bick 4 while it is still wet, though not soaking. Leather absorbs conditioner better when wet. This has been a practice of mine for many years with leather jackets and boots. I have never had to toss a leather ...

True that, but an Akubra is an Akubra, so you'll be well served by your incoming hat. Enjoy, and report back when you get it. We'll be interested in reading what you think of your new purchase! Regars! Michaelson :M: An Akubra is an Akubra. Enough said. I have just not found a better made hat for d...

Re: under 150$ ?? which one would you buy ?
I can't speak to the Garrison or Todd hat mentioned. I can tell you I am a firm believer in the Akubra. I do not own a Fed IV. My Fed was made several years prior to that. I have a lot of hats and my Fed has been through more than any of them. By my count it has about 4 million miles on it, if you c...

Re: How much would Indy's jacket have cost in 1936?
Keep in mind, Indy was a college professor and not a public school teacher. I would think his salary would have been at the upper end of the averages. Plus his honoraria he would get. Regards, Indiana Jeff To add to that thought, most teachers back then in primary education were women. That was one...

Re: How much would Indy's jacket have cost in 1936?
Nice jacket Warbird. This is the exact jacket I want, but in black. Thanks all! I do have a special affinity for this jacket. I have recently found a company that will put a new lining in the jacket and I plan to do that in the next few weeks. I have nothing to base it on, but I think black is hard...

Re: Measuring pit to pit for a jacket
One usually needs to take measurements from old vintage jackets with a small grain of salt, too, as you have to allow for a little shrinkage of the leather over the years. All leather shrinks. If your size 42 jacket has 21" measurements, one has to wonder where it started out when the jacket w...

Re: Measuring pit to pit for a jacket
Old thread here, but my experience is that different manufacturers have different tendencies. But my vintage coats almost always are very close to right on the money. My two oldest leather jackets are size 42 and they both measure 21".

Re: New Legend Jacket for the 30th Anniversary
Wells guys I finally recieved my Texas Steerhide legend jacket today! Man it is so soft but kinda heavy, but I wanted something like that because I was afraid the lighter stuff might snag and rip on something. Its a little darker than I thought but I do like it and I really think the fit is good. I...

Re: New member needing some help here
I have personally found most hat makers have similar sizing. The biggest difference that I have found is due to the weight and stiffness of the hat. A western weight hat, with the stiffness of a modern Stetson, is less giving and usually feels tighter than a fedora weight hat.

This jacket cost my great uncle $10 in 1937 http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj286/magnuscat/IMG_4088.jpg http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj286/magnuscat/IMG_4086.jpg He wore it through war, from the air, and weather and gave it to me nearly 30 years ago. It is made of FQHH. Leather is still in...

Most of my hats stay in their boxes. I keep two out at a time usually. The one I have just worn or will wear the next day and an old western beater that gets tossed on for working outside. I never put it in a box.

Re: Kangaroo hide?
Kangaroo has more cross sectional fibers than any other leather. It is very difficult to tear. But it is more prone to scuff than most other leathers. I have no experience with the jackets in question, but own several pairs of kangaroo hunting and western boots as well as one older jacket. Usually i...
