Possible origin of the bag strap found

German and I discussed this matter earlier and because I'm watching the Young Indy Chronicles now where a lot of weapons are shown I am now absolutley sure that the bag strap is really a shoulder strap for a rifle. It must be from a british rifle because of MBA and all the other stuff being british. I will investigate further and I will maybe ask Noel at the summit about it.

Redbeard

Interesting idea and quite probable. I always thought it was a variation on the leather strap configuration forming the gunbelt/shoulder strap used as part of military uniform in the WWII period, but you could really be on to something there!

A Rifle strap?? Sounds like a totally reasonable option to me.

This link suggests that the Enfield rifle slings were 43 3/4 inches long by 1 1/4 inches:

http://www.rifleslings.com/british_slin ... w_page.htm

However, I like the theory and if we manage to dig one up that measures 65 inches by 1 inch, we could nail it.

This is probably a good way to start:
http://www.rifleslings.com/ 8)

After all, Noel doesn't seem to be all that certain about the origin of the bag:
Can someone cover the MKVII bags; which version was used in the films? I have no specifics on the bag and strap, we probably found a bag in our stock at Bermans and Nathans and adjusted it at the fitting. Noel Howard

No, I took it from the site Sheffield posted.

Ah, sorry - thought it was one of yours.

Looks close, doesn't it?

Yep, but the buckle is a bit too squared.

Could somebody please post pictures of the original buckle which was used in the movies? I think we really may have found something here.

I've actually heard this theory once before, and YEARS ago, but it was never followed up on. Great work, redbeard and German! Looking forward to reading of your research progress! High regards. Michaelson

Well, the funny thing is, the Belgian Army's uniform were kaki pants, kaki shirt (the indy type !), webbing belt, ..

I have a nearly complete indygear, just by getting one of those outfits!

Great photos, aren't they?! :D Kris, you may want to give consideration to the cloth Wested Raiders jacket. Good price...probably the same as what you'd pay for a pretend jacket, and made by the folks who made the real Indy jackets! Something to ponder....High regards. Michaelson

I've always had a theory on the buckle. It looks just like the buckle of a gunbelt suspender worn by state troopers and Canadian law enforcement. Come to think of it, reading this thred, I believe those straps were common on WWII era British dress uniforms. I've tried to find these straps, to no avail. I even asked a state trooper about them and he didn't know what I was talking about! I KNOW I've seen them wear these!

I would say that the only thing holding me back on this theory of the sling is the legnth...I am looking at some of these and NONE of them seem like 72 inches...we'll just have to and see. I have a G3 strap coming to me soon.

Look at this price! With this price it's a winner in every case. Do you know the measures? Somebody in the state really should really check these babys out.

Heck, if it's wide enough, it might even be worth it for the buckle alone. Maybe not long enough for me, but if it's 65" a lot of people will be happy. ;)

Yeah I think it will do the trick. If someone is about to order from them. Please contact me because im hooked on getting one, so maybe we can work something out.

I saw the same sling here in Denmark and the price was 76$, so it´s quite a deal as you can see for a real leather gun sling.

Sorry about all my typing mistakes :-) It was "real leather sling" I was trying to write.

They look pretty darn good. Too bad that you can't see the buckle a little better. I just ordered a small handfull of these, so I'll let you know when they arrive if they are any good. Ace, I will reserve one for you.
Besides Ace, anyone else want one?? I ordered 5 total, so it's first come, first serve.

Yeah, I just ordered 5 as well...or 10, depending on what happened w/ that first order...oopsie...

Turns out their standard shipping is around $9, so it was hard to justify buying ONE for $2 and adding $9 shipping! So I picked up 5 just to spend more on the product than the shipping...oh, I think that's what my wife means by 'getting in touch w/ your feminine side'...I just rationalized buying FIVE of something I only wanted ONE of...

When I get them, I'll measure and post a pic. If anyone is interested, I'll probably keep two, and have 3 (or 8?) more on hand.

P.S. The guy on the phone (second try at ordering) assured me (yeah right) that they LOOK black in the pic, but they really are a dark brown. He couldn't vouch for the length. Ace, any guesses on the length?

As I remember from my service time, The color is a very dark brown. mainly because of weapon oil, dirt ect. You could not have wested this strap better yourself.

As for the length: I remember when you extended the strap to about max the rifle can be hold vertical near your waist, Guess it will be no problem if its the same length as the one I had.

AWESOME, Ace!

After all this time of folks trying to find long enough strips, if this IS it, to end up finding it was a thing already made to order...

...well, Michaelson mentioned someone had this good idea before - stands to reason the prop department wouldn't go to tandy and try to make something, they'd slap together something on hand.

Shame nobody hit paydirt before! Of course, if they did, these would be on ebay for $100 each, too...arf!

I believe this is the sling in question. Unfortunately, every other site I have found that carries it, states the strap is 50"....bummer. Hopefully Im wrong and its at least 60" or so!

If it's short, I'll have several on hand, and will look at combining two. If I'm lucky I can do it somewhere that doesn't show.

Hey Red,
I didn`t know what waves our talk about the Bag has iluminated.
Just great.
When I first saw my bag and its strap it brought me back to my paratrooper time in the Bundeswehr. not real, just a backflash  :P
And I remembered the tons of kilograms I carried into the woods and over the hills.
OK back to the present!!!
I think I will search my military collection if Ican find one of my old straps. Can take a long time. The most of that stuff in in my parents house somehundred miles from me. Too bad. But not impossible

let`s see how it goes on wit this great posting.

Kind regards to all
The German
