Okay, I'm trying to learn how to use a whip. I'm now at a point where I think I can't learn from try and ouch anymore. I was thinking about either getting a book or a DVD on the subject. The advantage of the book is that you can keep it wiht you but a DVD shows thing much better. Do some of you own DVDs? What are your feelings about it, can you recommand it?

Thanks,
Redbeard

It's almost better to read how to do it or have someone teach you. I've found "The Bullwhip Book" to be quite helpful, but I've never seen a tape or DVD on how to do it, so I might be wrong. It just looks too easy when you see someone do it on your tv.

Essentially, you just move the whip and the crack comes when you change the direction of the swing. That little bit of info really helped it all click for me (Thanks Lash! ;) ).

haven't had an opportunity to watch the Paul Stenhouse vid, but have heard good reports about it.

Also check out Alex Green's vids Bullwhip I and II available from Western Stage Prod. Also Mike Murphey's Fundamental Whip Cracking for those that want to do more than just the basic swing it over your head and change the direction and make a lot of noise. it shows how to do about 12 - 15 cracks that will really change how you crack a whip.

I have Conway's book, and I still haven't figured out that quick-sixer. Need to see someone do it I guess.

Good Luck with the cracking.

ps: just to toot my own horn a bit, I won the Overall Grand Champion Whipcracker Award at the Whip Enthusiasts WE-V in Dallas earlier this month.

Paul Stenhouse. In my opinion, he does the best job in teaching the basics thoroughly.

Redbeard, I really liked the Alex Green videos Bullwhip I and II available from Western Stage Prod. But I agree with Zohar about Paul's DVD b/c that really solidified everything for me. Paul really explains things well while demonstrating the basics.

if it's basics you want you can;t go wrong with Paul's DVD. it's comprehensive, user friendly, and also teaches you how to replace falls, tie poppers, and generally maintain your whip.

If you want something that will really progress your technical cracking skills, Mike's Fundamental Whip Cracking Techniques is hard to beat. It's almost a ready made training programme and will keep anyone, who's fairly new to whips, going for a long time. He uses stock whips in it, but you won't find any difficulty adapting it to bull whips. No Bull Whip Cracking is the follow up, showing advanced skills using bullwhips.

If you're interested in basic target cutting, check out Whip Cracking Made Easy Part II. You need to have some basic cracking ability first, though.

Regarding book v video v DVD....

As someone has already said, books can be taken with you. The Bullwhip Book by Andrew Conway is about as clear as any book is going to get on the subject, but it's trying to describe often complex moves in still pictures and words.

Videos work better for me, cos you get to see the shape the whip makes in air, and the movements of the person using it.

DVD wins though, cos you can slow the action right down without loss of clarity. Definite plus!
