I found this shirt at walmart the other day and I couldn't pass up the $10 pricetag. It look's pretty accurate but doesn't have the epaulets or the pleats down the chest. But it does have the white buttons. Look at the "sidewalk" color.

Great find Colby - the sidewalk colour looks very close to the Wested shirts. i like the Sandcastle colour too.

And for under $10, who needs pleats anyway??

It looks like a cuff on the bottom, so I might have to unstitch that...

Good find on the shirt! I might have to pick up a couple and show my seamstress how to alter and viola!

The pants: Differences are the cuffs of course, zip-fly, but at least it has back button flapped pockets. You woud have to look at them though to see if they are remotely close. Not bad looking though for twenty bucks! Heading there in a few. I will let you all know.

I looked at these items at Walmart yesterday, and the online pictures are a little deceiving. Don't get me wrong, for 10 bucks you get what you get. But I thought I'd eloborate:

The shirt in person seems to have larger pockets, and the material is very thick. Almost like a jeans shirt (which they have too, almost just like this shirt except demin color). I just doesn't look right in person.

The color of the pants online is VERY deceiving. You can't zoom in enough, but the "heather taupe" color is actually a sort of tiny mixed colored cross lines (if that makes sense). In other words, it isn't one uniform color. The rear pockets are also "button through," not flaps.

I'd say the shirt for the price is a go, but the pants aren't even close so I would pass on them. I think I'm going to pick up the shirt as a work shirt just to have on when I'm making gear items.

Not to poo-poo at all (sorry about that), I'm just a little to anal to go for the cheaper than cheap alternatives. Okay alot anal.

The material to me just feeling it feels amazingly soft and thin to me. Very light like a dress shirt. But they do have a denim shirt identical to it here:

I really like the shirt and I bought a large but I may buy another in medium for a more close fit. As far as the pockets go they seem fine to me to get the job done, but they do appear larger in person than the pics depict.

I may modify the shirt sometime to make it look accurate. The color is about a small shade darker than the wested color. Its an offwhite with a drop of khaki in it. The picture on the website is a bit too white from the actual color. (I'm doing this observation as the shirt sits in my lap)But then again my room has somewhat poor lighting.

I'm sure if you wanted to go through the trouble (for a $10 shirt?) you could re-dye the shirt like on the Indy gear mainsite and make it accurate. It's just a good nice cheap shirt. Plus the price isn't too bad so you can go on adventures with it and not worry about damaging your investment.

Well, even if it is kinda thick, it'd make a nice winter shirt...and yeah, the pants wouldn't be too accurate, though the criss cross might not be too innaccurate...it seems to me the grey pants indy wore may have been the small criss cross thing, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, the term 'heather' usually means a mix of two colors, like heather grey sweats which if you look at them closely are a mix of grey and white.

Well, I moved too fast - got a couple of these shirts coming, as well as a pair of pants. Call it a $40 experiment, and I'll let you know.

Trevelyan might have been kidding, but if the shirt is cheap enough that it's worth playing games w/ it, I really did pick up two in case that idea worked...Trev, were you just thinking to have enough extra material to make epaulets and runner trim down the front, or would you actually take specific parts of the 2nd shirt to do that?

Maybe when I uncuff the pants I'll have enough left over to make pocket flaps...

I bought 3 of those shirts a couple of weeks ago. The material is quite thin, but very nice. More like Egyptian cotton, but for $10 bucks I’m sure it’s not. Anyway for that kind of money, you can’t go wrong.

I want to buy that SIDEWALK color one but unfortunately Walmart only accept local orders.....I am living in Hong Kong but I can pay by Paypal if anyone can help... USPS Air Mail would be expensive for around US$12.00 for a shirt but Surface Mail would cost around US$6.00 each as I want to buy two, the above Surface mail should be around US$12.00..... I was dead serious. Before I got my MBA shirt, I tried it with a cheap safari shirt I got at a thrift store. My mom's pretty good at sewing, so I convinced her to try and make a Temple of doom shirt out of it. After cutting off the sleeve, we barely had enough material, but it turned out pretty good. With these Walmart shirts so cheap, I might try it again by using one as a donor. I'm guessing the back of the shirt would be the best place to cut the material, but if the sleeves are long enough, you could just cut them off and still have a funtional, if sleeveless, shirt. I know Jan did it pretty successfully with a couple of LL beans, but those are costly. My batteries are dead in my camera, so here's Jan's webpage.

I too stumbled across this shirt a few weeks ago, I too could not pass it up, just another to add to the collection, the ever growing collection it seems. Indy Shirts abound, it's a nice shirt, fits well and is very comfortable.

Yeah, I can see that - if you're going TOD, taking out one sleeve to 'harvest' is a good trick. I wonder if cutting an inch and a half off the bottom of the donor shirt would be enough for the pleats...maybe, if I didn't mind ending them at the waist. Hmm...the curve of the bottom of the shirt would probably work against me...I might end up w/ pleats that want to curve no matter how I stitch them, and end up looking much more Mariachi than Indiana...

Just wondering if there's a way for the donor to survive the procedure, as a useful, albeit perhaps slightly shorter, shirt...

I might just wear the heck out of the both of them until one gives, and then it's the donor. Survival of the fittest!

I'm tackling this one!

I went out and bought two "sidewalk" colored shirts at Wal-Mart today. (The color looks DARN close to me.) They are 100% cotton and feel nice and soft. They're definitely thicker than a dress shirt, but are not a denim shirt by any means.

My wife (a sewing goddess ) started working on it. The second shirt has already had the right sleeve cut off (that'll be my Temple shirt!), and is in the process of being cut into strips for the Indy racing-stripes and epaulettes. The buttons from the cuff will be used for the epaulettes.

Cross your fingers and stay tuned. I will post pics when she's done.

I'm glad to see that so much activity is going on because of this! I'll really like to see some pics of a finished product!

I look forward to pics. I picked up one of these shirts as they were being put out a month or two ago. I love this shirt!

Update: the modifications are about 70% done. One side has the Indy-stripe completely done and I'm pretty pleased with how it looks. (Of course, I leave the final call to the all-seeing eyes of Club Obi Wan! ) Hope to have it done and pics up in the next day or two...

Quick question: are the button-ends of the epaulettes rounded or do they have their coners knocked-off at a 45-degree angle?

Looks great to me. I wish someone would start mass producing a similar shirt for the department stores. Since I've gotten into Indy gear, I've really started to like the look of the front pleats, but you rarely ever see them.

Tell her that she could have a career here at C.O.W producing Indy shirts .....Just hope that Wal-Mart doesn't catch on, lol, just kidding....

I'm hitting Wal-Mart today. I hope they have those in stock. Heck, for that price, buy 3 just in case, and you'll have plenty of extra material to make 2 complete shirts.

Okay, I've got some PMs regarding the shirt, but I just wanted to ask the community-at-large... If my wife were to start making the mods available to the general public, would that interest anybody?

Our thought is, for $35 we'll get you a shirt from Wal-Mart and make the mods. Or you can send us your shirt and for $25 we'll make the mods. Shipping would be tacked on top (should be around $4 in the States). This should save everyone some money because you won't have to buy two shirts; we'll provide the sacrificial shirts.

What do y'all think?

Let me be the first to step up to the plate, then! I'd gladly pay $35 for a mod-mart Indy shirt! If you decide to do this, add me to the list! How do the shirts fit compared to their labeled size?

Colby, what is your neck and sleeve measurement and how do they measure up against the large of this shirt? I like a size 16 neck, but then the rest of the shirt can get pretty big on me.

The shirt looks better after I washed it and it shrank a little because my body size is actually a medium but my arms length is a large. I measured about 32 inches arm length and 14 neck size. The chest area isn't tight enough for me but I just tuck the shirt in deeper so it tightens up. I'm a bit unporportional so I imagine I'll end up getting custom sizes when I get a wested.

LOL! Yeah, I have similar problems, which is why I asked. My neck likes a large shirt, but some mediums fit my shoulders, chest, and arm length better.

I'm going to wash and dry my shirt (it's a large) and take some more pics tonight with me wearing it (to give you an idea of how the shirt wears). I would recommend heading to Wally-World and trying one on if at all possible.

Deadlock, I, too, would be interested in getting one of these shirts from you. $35 isn't bad at all for this! Your wife is an excellent seamstress, it appears!

I've been waiting for WPG to release their shirt since it was said to probably be cheaper than Wested's and MBA's, but I'm willing to jump the gun and get this Wal-Mart shirt from you. I wear a large. Let me know how you want the funds to get to you. (I prefer money orders)

Just got back from Walmart, and they had a ton of those shirts in stock.
I picked up two, but I screwed up and bought a medium, because the little plastic thingie on the hanger said XL. :evil:
So, I have a size medium if anyone wants it. Just PM me.

The shirts seem very nice, and for the money, you can't beat it.
