Rudimentary Videos of Basic Cracks

Here are some videos of some of the basic cracks that can be done with a whip. I am by no means an expert, and therefore I don't have the best form in the world.

All credit for me learning these cracks goes to Paul Stenhouse, and his EXCELLENT video, Whip Handling and Maintenance. I highly recommend it.

It can be bought here: http://www.stenhousewhips.com/maintVideo.html

All of these videos are in .wmv format. They should work with Windows Media Player. I'm sorry for you linux/mac guys, but I don't have a divx version available. The average file size for each video is 800kb. These are hosted on my own server space, and there is NO WAY possible for it to use up COW's bandwidth. Download away, as I have unlimited bandwidth.

The Forward (aka Circus) Crack:

The Underhand Crack:

The Horizontal (aka Sidearm) Crack

The Reverse Horizontal Crack

The Horizontal Crack into a Reverse Horizontal Crack

The Reverse Forward (aka Reverse Circus) Crack

The Forward Crack into a Reverse Circus Crack (aka The Figure 8, if I'm not mistaken). I can do this practically indefinitely.

All 5 Cracks strung together. Horizontal into Reverse Horizontal into Underhand into Figure 8 (Forward into Reverse Forward)

I hope this helps you guys visualize how to do these cracks. Again, these are NO SUBSTIUTE for Paul's video/DVD. It is the ULTIMATE resource for leaning not only how to crack, but also how to maintain your whip for its entire life.

Thank you very much! This is really good stuff. I am in the process of learning how to use a whip and this will help a lot.

I see, I have a long way to go....

I like it! Though now I'm confused... the overhead that I do looks almost exactly like that reverse horizontal - and that reverse forward is amazing!

Then you're probably doing a reverse horizontal. The reverse forward/circus, or "figure 8" takes a while to get down. That's the crack I had to spend the most time on learning.

Edit: Oh, the whip I'm cracking in all of these videos is my 8ft Joe Strain. The one on the ground in some of the shots is the 10 foot Strain. I'll try to take some videos comparing the two lengths sometime this week.

I'm going to have to agree with you McFly.

Zohar, I am not sure if you learned the names of the horizontal and rev horiz from Paul Stenhouse as I haven't had a chance to review it, but you do have the names reversed. Your videos here should help a lot of people though.

I just won the "Technicals" at DFW Whip Weekend V this past week. There really isn't anyone to catch up with me that I've seen yet. I do routines that people don't even know the names of. A few guys commented after I did the double handed staggered volleys that I looked bored. I have got it down so well that I go into a zone and completely relaxed. The same happened when I was doing the Queensland Crossovers. A few commented that I had my eyes closed like in a trance and that I made it look too easy. Believe me it takes hours, days, weeks and months of practice to be perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Practice makes practice. The horizontal cracks are the components of the Queensland Crossovers. Do the horizontal overheads continuously with one whip without bringing the whip around your head. Thus you will get 2 cracks when you swing it each direction without taking behind your head but always having the whip in front of you. Then learn it with your other "bad" hand. Next, do it with both hands in a staggered time and you should be able to get 4 cracks if done right. Most people cant get the cracks to go off well but are able to cross the whips. That's the hardest part of the Queensland Crossover.

It's weird but I can crack a whip better with my bad hand (left) than my dominant hand. It just sounds much smoother and louder with it in my left than right sometimes.

Yeah, I realized that when I went back and looked at his tape. But, my videos were already made, and I haven't had the time to fix the titles.

Oddly, I experience the same thing. :-k

Zohar, thanks for the video clips. As a visual learner it helps to finally see what a figure 8 looks like!
