Have an authentic lamb raiders and am seriously considering distressing it.Just wondered wheres the best place to buy acetone /alcohol .is the sandpaper that every uses available from diy stores or would u get it from somewhere more specialized ?

Personally I just use(d) regular sandpaper from B&Q or somewhere. Acetone is tricky - I mail order it from

I got a phone call asking me what I needed it for so I explained and sent them the Indygear url and a url with a thread on distressing jackets. They now send it to me without any hassle.

They might be the same thing, but can you imagine trying to distress a jacket using one of those tiny brushes? Heck, I'd be as old as Michaelson or Bufflehead by the time I was finished #

dont suppose anyone has put a collection of pics together of the raiders jacket from all different angles so u can get an idea of of where to distress ? now that would be handy.

Almost as tricky as rubbing alcohol - isoprpyl alcohol here. For some reason it is also devilishly hard to get hold of and I had to go the mail order route again.

PS - Am I right in saying nail polish remover is weak acetone?

Isn't Acetone the only thing that can kill a 'Toon? "The Dip" and all of that?

"The Dip" is a mixture of acetone, benzine and turpentine. That was a great movie.

Are you telling me you can't just walk into a chemists' and buy a small bottle of rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover?!

Isopropyl alcohol is a disenfectant and Acetone is nail polish remover. The concentration in nail polish remover is more than enough what you need to distress a jacket.

Oh I am sure you can get nail polish remover - I never looked. I just meant to get a sizeable quantity of acetone. And isoprpyl alcohol I went to 5 chemists and asked them and they all looked at me as though I was speaking Yiddish.

I can't imagine not being able to easily buy rubbing alcohol, cheap shot coming. It seems like such a basic thing to have around the house, cheap shot coming. I mean, what would Kitty Dukakis have done if she lived in England?

That WAS a cheap shot, but a funny one.

Bad news from a guy who paints his wife's toenails...(hey, I get the points where I can, gimme a break!) -

Not all nail polish remover is acetone, or has acetone. Apparently acetone is a strong enough chemical that even here in the U.S. non-acetone nail polish remover is as common or even more common than the acetone stuff.

So if you're living somewhere where you are having trouble finding this stuff, read the bottle carefully...you might spend a lot of time on the jacket just to find you didn't do a thing. Or worse, you did something worse.

It is great for cleaning off glue and tape residue on film cutting machine kind of things. Yeah, I'm a trained projectionist...

Really, it's great for cleaning stuff as it disolves a lot of things. Oil gone bad on machine parts can be removed with it and then replaced with fresh.

I'd think twice about using nail polish remover on the jacket...it's not pure acetone, and can leave a whitish film on the leather.

Yeah, I use nailpolish remover to remove permanent sharpie marker from laminated paper...it works fabulously, except for the time a few years back when I tried using non-acetone nailpolish remover on the lamination stuff and was disheartened when my efforts yielded no results. Which reminds me, I accidentally marked with sharpie on the chalkboard at work today and need to get that off tomorrow with nailpolish remover (the students got a hoot out of the mishap anyway).

The goat that I have was distressed with fingernail polish by its former owner. No whitish film there, unless he used something to get it off.
