Hey.
I was wondering, if some of you whip gurus would share their insight on poppers. I want to make my own poppers and I'm thinking about things like material, lenghts and so on. I mean some of you musta have tried about everything. Pleas share.

I'm not a guru, but I was looking for similar info...I found this thread the other day, about materials to use for crackers/poppers, if it helps.

I did what they suggested, and picked up some nifty nylon down at Home Depot. Check out the thread.

Still searching for an actual diagram of how to MAKE one, but I also have a real popper here so I was just going to copy that design.

Also saw a thread for ATTACHING a popper that was a big help...let me go find that thread, too...

On all my whips I use a poly/synthetic string for the crackers. I have tried heaps of different sorts including poly/propolene but nothing that I have tried is as good as the poly/synthetic. The other day I heard of someone using Fly fishing line but I havn't tried it.

The poly/synthetic cracks extremly loud and dosen't get tangled very easily. It probalbly dosen't last quite as long as some of the others which for those of you who don't make your own it could be a nuiscance.

Redbeard, I know you're on the other side of the Pond but another option is Paul Stenhouse's great popper-making tutorial on DVD.

I don't like bonded nylon poppers, as they can become tangled up on your thong, and cause actual damage to your whip (it happened to me).

I prefer crackers made from poly baling twine.

Zohar, Joe Strain warned me over the phone but noooooooooo. I had to try it out for myself. STUPID!!! Within the first 2 days I had a number of small slice marks on my brand new fall on my brand new 8 foot Strain. The whip still handles and cracks beautifully but I know the marks are there and I see and feel them every time I apply Pecard dressing to the fall.

Cracking whips while wearing skimpy underwear... now what kind of forum is this, really?!

Thank you very much for you input. It helps a lot. How does the lenght of the popper affect the volume of the crack? What exactly is bailing?

Pretty cool - I was just making my own based on another suggestion from another thread, glad to see your method, while starting differently, yeilds the same stuff!

'Course, your method is great when you've got stuff to burn - the other method started w/ a rough measure of 1 1/4 foot of stuff, then twisted it till there was about an inch left and then knotted - no loss or waste, for those w/ little material to work from - not a truck of baling twine, that is.

But I loved your version as well, and bookmarked it for reference - thanks!

I did not read the whole thread, but the way I make poppers, is take black nylon thread, get my brother to hold his hands about a foot apart, and wrap the thread around his hands, until there is seven threads on both the underside of his hand and the top. Then, I tie a knot in one side, cut the other, and hook the knotted end on a J shaped piece in a hand drill. Then, turn the drill to reverse, and twist. then, take the straight, twisted line | and make it into a 'U', hooking the U in the drill, and turning the drill to forward. then, twist, and make a knot at the end. Anyway, that's my method.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I used Molorom's method to tie on a new popper on my Duke whip and it worked like a charm. Thank you Molorom and thank you IndyGear for archiving this stuff.

I've gotta agree with Indiana Joe here. He offers several different options in terms of cost and materials, and shows you the entire process, which, when you have it down, it quick and easy, whatever your choice of materials!

Nice thing about the IndyGear universe: there always seem to be several different options, and while we all have our preferences on various things, its the sharing of the info that makes the community great!

I know this is an old thread, no pun intended, but I just bought some nylon thread from Joe, and he mentioned nothing about it cutting my Lonestar that he made. I made a popper from this stuff, and BOOM! I love it! No problems with leather cuts either. Dang it's loud!
