TOD - Whip on Indy's belt

I just watched TOD again and I noticed that while Indy is walking into the Indian village for the first time with Willie and Shorty, his whip looks very weird. It looks like a peice of rope! It looks like it has no bulk or weight at all, and is just droopy-looking! Then in other scenes, his whip looks like a normal one, with some width and plating and stuff. Just wanted to point out my observation. :)

If it's the shot of them from behind going down the hill it was filmed with doubles as an insert. Might not have had the whip handy.

If you see Ford's face then I have no clue. I'll have to take a look.

148,

You've offered something else to look for. In a previous post regarding Alden laces, there was a pic posted of Indy on the Flying Wing. The whip looks as though it was run over by a steamroller! It's flat, and squashed, and is quite the site.

Maybe worth hunting for the post, provided it wasn't removed from any of the prev. crashes.

I was gonna mention that too, Gater. There's a scene in Raiders like that. It's when Indy is kneeling on the flying wing, about to shoot the lock off of the cockpit. His whip is hanging in long ovals and seems to have no weight or stiffness to it. It's always been my understanding that Ford did not always use whips specifically made for the film. I've always understood they arrived at using Morgan whips because that's what Ford's instructor used, and that's what Ford was comfortable with. Maybe some of the whips we see from time to time are very old, well-broken in whips that were actually owned by the instuctors and not made for the movie?

Or Maybe they just used fake prop whips when they didn't need a real one for actual use. Why have a heavy whip hanging off your belt if you don't have to?

My guess is that it was a break-away material, in case it got snagged on something.

Indy 148. This question has plagued me since I entered this web site and have purchased 2 whips. My theory now is that the whips are so old that the thongs are broken. AFter all, this is a movie with millions of dollars to waste on making Indy's Gear look aged. Just look what they did to the jackets (steel wool was used to age them). Or the length of the handle may affect the hang in addition to a broken thong in addition to age. If you look at past posts and even on the main site. The stunt men supplied whips to the movie along with mr morgan.

A nice good look at an aged/broken whip is at MK's web site. I believe it's regularguy. com, it show's vic armstrong's whip, a stuntman for the indiana jones movies.

Anyway. my theory. Could be wrong. Great question!
At least i know that I'm not the only one thinking about this! :D

okay, it's www.regular-guy.com

It looks just like the whip hanging on indy as he walks into the village.

Slouching bullwhips... does that mean that the belly/bellies of the whip is/are finished or broken?

The cheap whip I picked up coils easy, just like a rope, just like someone mentioned Indy did in one scene (at the falls, after Barranca?). (Also, that could have been any prop whip, rather than a stunt whip, right?)

Mine is a cheap whip, low plait, but boy does it crack. It handles right, it feels great. It's my first whip, but it's still sturdy, it isn't deteriorating, it's just well broken in. Of course, maybe ya'll can show me what I'm missing if I can make the QM in a couple months...maybe I just don't know any better.

The low plait may have something to do w/ the flexibility, though. I'm still trying to get a handle on whips (no pun intended).

I think the coil he does after disarming Barranca is from the whip's usage and flexibilty from experience.
