New Joe Strain Matched Pair

OK, we may have the Optimo crowd around these parts, but this acquisition is in that league. I just received from Mr. Joe Strain a matched pair of 6 foot LONE STAR whips. The Lone Star whips are Joe's special signature line of whips. He makes them with a 10 inch handle, with 2 tone knots. This hide was absolutely gorgeous according to Joe. My perference would have been natural, but the "whiskey" hide was extremely good quality. Joe said that the laces were perfect off this hide, which resulted in no splits during the plaiting process. And I can tell. No visible and no hidden lumps anywhere.
I have been pondering for over 6 months that I needed a faster action matched pair of long handled bullwhips. And it took me that long to decide who would do it and what design.
Thanks Joe, if you are reading this!!!

Very nice, Walt! Very nice indeed! Now you need to get a copy of Mike Murphy's "No Bull Whipcracking".

CONGRATS SERGEI!!!
I can't wait to here how they handle. I would like to get a matching pair of 6 footers. The 5.5 foot Mike Murphy's are fabulous. I would be interested to see how these compare.
Better yet, I can't wait until you get a chance to make it back to Peoria. Wild horses couldn't keep me from meeting up with you. Unless they crushed me in a stampede.
all the best you lucky dog!

You bet Chamorro! Like I tell my office-mates, "I'm always packin!". There's nothing like going onto the parking lot (grassy area) and flashing off a few cracks to work off the stress.

Canasta: Thanks for the kind comments. I only had one session with these guys. All I have to say, is that the Murphy stock whips are an excellent made whip. And someday his bullwhips maybe in my bag. But even with the 5.5 foot stocks, it's harder for me to do cross overs (sp?) and arrow heads (yes, Kyle I've been working on them) with that length of stock whip. The reason is with the 21 inch handle on the stocks it's still harder to keep the falls from intertwinning. However, the 6 foot bullwhips are shorter and easier to control (in my opinion). Both are extremely fun. I also noticed that these bullwhips are boomers, like a shotgun. The stockwhips sound like a muffled 22 rifle. Someone asked me which is my favorite whip of the 20 or so I have now, and I couldn't answer that. It's like having 20 children and picking your favorite. Each different whip offers a different palet of qualities. Besides that is just my rationalization for KEEPING THEM ALL.
Like I said. "Ain't this a great hobby?"

You're right Sergei, the stock whips are alittle light in the crack, but Arrow heads rock! I have a bit of trouble with getting the whip tangled too. One of these days I'm gonna master those "4 corners" though.
In fact, one of these days I'm ganna have a crack routine named after me. I just hope its not the "Here's a whip in your eye" or the "Earlobe express to the moon" routine.
All the best!!!

If a handle is longer, is it easier to crack? I handled one of Sebastian's Joe Strain bullwhips that had a longer handle than an Indy and it was amazing!

They were $310 per whip for the 12 plait, 6 footer. And it took Joe about a week delay to have them delivered to me. That's one thing about Joe, he does about a couple whips a day. That's extremely fast. His normal annual run rate is about 500 to 600 whips. But bad news, catch him quick. He has indicated to me he needs to take SEVERAL MONTHS off. He's complaining about physical problems and he needs to mend. And then once he gets doing whips again, he will crank down his volume. I'm bummed.
ITG: Well I find that the longer handle is easier to control the whip and is more accurate for targe work. The longer handle makes the thong *track* better. To exagerate my claim, I've used a snake whip ( a whip with no handle foundation), it's much harder to control in the direction you want it to go. Also the analogy of the rifle vs. the pistol. The rifle due to it's longer barrel is much more accurate than a pistol.
Drakh: Well that makes about 20. I have a couple whips that I have wrote off as being not worthy.

Sergei~
You wouldn't happen to have any whips you wouldn't mind selling would ya? I'm in the market for a new whip, something around $100-150 most likely. With 20 whips, there's gotta be some. How bad are the ones you wrote off as not worthy?
Let's talk, I'll be there Saturday, maybe we can work something out.

Sure, I can bring some from that category and then some. At least if things don't work out from my stash, I can point you in the right direction on other "decent" sources in that price range.

Wonderful Sergei, I'll bring some cash and we'll talk.
I would very much enjoy something in the 10 foot category if possible.
Mind if I ask what brands you'll be bringing? Thanks!! I'm looking forward to this bbq more and more everyday!

Let's just discuss it at the BBQ. I don't want to miscomunicate here. No matter how precise my wordsmithing, it will always be misconstrued in this forum.

Yeah, it's quite an honor to have those whips. I don't use them all that much, as I want to extend their life expectancy as much as possible, but they are SWEET to throw! I still have to get Mike to make me another set so I can finally put the original ones under glass.

Congrats on the new aquisitions! Sergei, I must say, those whips are beauts.
You are a lucky man. I also cannot wait to here how they handle. Crack 'em in good health!
