well,
I just recently got a quick wave of cash :D And now I am getting
a jacket and a shirt. Which one is more practical for everyday wear,
but still a good raiders shirt? What im really wondering, is the Bean
worth the extra money? I want to wear is all the time. I may end up getting 1 of bolth. or should i get 2 bean shirts?
Kindest Regards
Adam

I have the LL Bean shirt and I think it's great. It is the lighter khaki that they sold last year. This year's looks a little, I don't know, orange? The material is very strong, but relatively cool. Cotton Poplin has that quality. I don't have a Cabelas, but their 60/40 cotton to poly blend is troublesome to me.
Personally, I would order a Wested. That's what I am going to do next. And I will hold out hope that Bean will offer lighter colors next year.

Cabelas Safari Shirt(s) are mine!!!!

Cabelas safari shirt

I would go for the LL. Beans shirt FIRST. But that's just me.

If I were you, I would go Adventsource. They make a pretty good shirt. Go to Advent source.com, check out Pathfinder uniforms, and then look at the long sleeve shirts. I think it's a pretty good Indy shirt.

hey Geoff,
do you own one of these shirts and if so do you have any pictures of it not completly covered in merit badges? Its kinda hard to tell what the shirt itself looks like from the website.
Thanks :D

I can't comment on shirts from any other makers, but I do own 2 Wested shirts and I am very happy with them, they are great for everyday wear.

Look at this. This isn't bad for off the shelf, and you can't beat the price:

I don't actually own one of these, but you can't beat the price. I may order one just to see what they are like.

Fist, I have two of these. One long sleeve, the other short sleeve. Unfortunately, they are also both covered in badges. But I have seen several newbie pathfinders who haven't gotten their badges yet, wearing them and they look pretty good. They have pleats on the pockets as well. Adventsource also sells the fabric that the shirt is made with. So I think it wouldn't be hard to put pleats on the rest of the shirt. The color in the picture looks like a Dark Khaki, but they are actually a good Indy color.

Here's one with more cotton in it, so it should be softer.
Note: these shirts have some kind of pleat line running up both sides of the front of the shirt.

I'm thinking along the same line as Hemingway. Here's one that isnt 100% Polyester.

Great minds....
Oh, I can't back that up!
Anyway, I was thinking that you buy one of these shirts in white, then add a bit of khaki dye to get that really light khaki color of the Raiders shirt. -Just a thought.

Now that my friend looks good. What is the best color?

No pleat in that last one Fist, my boy.

 Yes my sharp eyed friend. I was on the line of a shirt along the same lines as the L.L. bean or Cabalis. I do agree that the uniform shirts with the pleat running down the front of both sides is closer to being correct than the other shirts listed above. They all look nice.

I still like the shirt Neolithic was wearing in his Marrakech adventure. Check it out in the Fedora section.

Fedora Jr,
I agree with you on this:

I think his is a Wested. It's next on my list. Well, after a hat by Fedora. Obviously, Peter's shirt is spot on. I offered the ones above as cheap alternatives and "beaters" if you will.

I might have to break down and buy one of those. It looks REAL good.

I'd say, save more and get a wested. That's a totally functional shirt for everyday use.

if you don't want to save, get an LL bean, great shirt, can be used for winter. Cabella's is a bit too thick for me. a bit too much, doesn't have nearly the same "fall" as the original indy shirts. The LL is very close in color and its fall, while the material is still thicker, is still very good.

Maul,
Have you seen the new ones? It doesn't look close in color anymore, I am sad to say.

It's still a great shirt, though.

Yeah Maul, I'm with Hemingway on this one. The new llb looks more orange than anything.

I just did an online chat with an LLB customer service rep who confirmed that the tan color has changed and that there aren't any of the old tan shirts left. She also said that customer input could bring the old color back.

Bummer, I wanted one of those shirts. Wish I had gotten an LLB instead of the Cabelas I got last week. The Cabelas looks nice but the poly blend just doesn't feel right.

Rosenet,
Hit the outlets. The next time you're in Concord, Nashua, North Conway, or Freeport, check out what they have on hand. Sometimes they have some of the older stuff.

Other than that, maybe we should all call and request that they bring back a lighter color. It really is silly; they have four dark colors available. Most manufacturers offer two dark and two light colors, or something along those lines.

oh goodness !! I didn't know that !

Ewwwww ! What a horrid color...looks like you stood in the middle of a tablesaw parade !

Sorry for the bad info...I was referring to the old color in that case...thats' the shirt I am gearing for my TOD outfit...the one with the torn arm..back then the color was so much more accurate.

Hey HJ,

Those are all law enforcement shirts. I don't think you will like them much as Indy shirts. First, the scalloped pockets aren't the right shape. Second, those are not pleats running down the front, but sewn in military creases. There will be two or three of those running down the back of the shirt also. Third, they will have a sewn on patch with holes in it on the front for attaching a badge.

Very true, very true,
I was just throwing those out there for people who wanted a cheap alternative that, at first glance, would pass muster.
Personally, I love my LL Bean shirt, though it is starting to look ragged. My next purchase will be a Wested, sometime this Fall.
Anyway, thanks for the advice, and I know it comes from one who knows fisthand!

Adam,
Please, file a full report when it arrives. I think you're the first one to buy one of the new batch of shirts. I would love to hear what you think.

Obviously, we'll know what the color of the Bean shirt for sure when Moloram's shirt arrives. However, I will say that I just saw the shirt in an L.L. Bean catalogue and it was indeed tan, not rusty orange tan.

well,
I got the shirt a few days ago.
And it is much diffrent in color than what the picture shows.
the color is excatly the same as in this picture

Ill post some pics possibly. The stitching is good and it could
be softer. Im sure 1 wash will do that.

Well Adam,
On your recommendation, I have ordered another Bean Shirt And...
... I am happy to say that it is exactly like the one I ordered at the end of last year. It looks nothing like the one on the web site, happily! It looks very LC, with dark buttons, to me. It has everything, but the longer epaulets and the verticle pleats. I am very pleased. It will hold me over until I order a Wested.
BTW, I ordered an XL Long, for sleeve length and it fits at the neck and in the sleeves (I have 36" arms). It's a bit roomy in the body, but that's OK.
Thanks Adam!

Nice to hear!

glad it worked out well. I personally love the shirt.

It shrinks just a little when you wash it.

And i mean a little. It fits me very well! :D

The color also matches my akubra.
