Newbie Introduction - Gloves Question

Hello! I am a new Student Ditch Digging, Poop-Picker-Upperer Novice here. I am only now beginning to learn about Indy Gear. I have wanted to introduce myself but haven't known how. Now I want to confirm my understanding of gloves and thought I'd kill two birds with one stone.

After reading past glove threads, I went to see what my local stores had in stock. I certainly didn't expect to find any 1123's, and I wasn't even sure there would be any 1130's left. As it turned out, I did find 1130's without the reinforced palm. And I found them in both the cream color and the gold/yellow color. Unfortunately, ( I think), they were all mule-stamped.

So, here's what I want to verify: The correct gloves to get since the 1123's are no more, are the 1130's without the palm reinforcement, but with the horse-stamp. Is that right? Regardless of whether that is right or wrong, what is the correct base color for film-accurate gloves?

Please set me straight on the glove quest thing.

Hi, Welcome to COW..You can also check out www.toddscostumes.com
He has the Midwest version there for only about $20 and they look just like them to me. Besides wasnt it said noone is sure exactly which glove it was since Paramount had a contract with both Wells Lamont and Midwest?

That said, the Wells Lamonts are generally the Indy glove of choice for the majority as far as I can tell, although which make is genuinely screen accurate may remain a mystery forever more. :?

I believe all Wells Lamonts have the mule stamp, although I didn't realise they came in slightly different (deliberate) shades? My pairs have always been a natural hide yellow colour.

Let us know what you find, and post some pics - we like pics!

Oh yeah, almost forgot! - A warm welcome to COW!

In looking into the glove situation with Wells Lamont and Midwest, I found that the leather colors had little to do with the type leather. The darker gold is available in cowhide or deerskin, and the lighter "buff" color is also available in various leathers.

At present, the Midwest glove on my site are the ONLY leather "driver" glove they offer with a straight thumb, regardless of color. It is pretty accurate, but not "dead on".

I am working on a new glove based on a Wells Lamont industrial glove which looks very "dead on" except for the mule stamp on the left cuff. However, they now use a color-coded wrist binding to indicate size. I am going to replace that with matching binding and offer it as an alternative to the Midwest.

I like the gold color, but my feeling is that the lighter "buff" color is more screen accurate. Before the DVD's came out, I thought he had canvas gloves because of the light color.

On a side note, I have found it very difficult to work with Wells Lamont. their minimum orders are enormous even from one of their distributors. Working direct with the factory is out of the question. They have a bewildering array of gloves (100 models? I'll bet they have 20 different leather "drivers" between the industrial line and the consumer line, and it's nearly impossible to tell them apart) and they offer no help in sorting them out. On top of that, they change them whenever they feel like it, (colors, pattern, trim, stampings, etc.) which makes it practically impossible to find the right glove. I guess their industrial customers don't care how their gloves look. I have managed to find a gracious rep who will let me buy them out the "back door" in small quantities to offer on my website.

Anyway, the good news is that I will soon have an accurate, lighter "buff" Wells Lamont glove (except for the mule stamp!!! ) as an alternative to the Midwest (which is a VERY nice company to work with, by the way!)

I've got a pair of dirty, pigskin Wells Lamonts. I have no idea which type they are, but I'm gonna try and get some pics posted eventually.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I appreciate your taking the time to post here.

I can post some pics of what I picked up, but they aren't anything that hasn't been posted in the past. One thing I can say that is different from what I have read in old threads, they cost more now. At least in the stores in my neighborhood. They were priced at $13 and something cents.

I'm now thinking that I might go with another Wells glove that was posted by IndianaFist in one of the old threads: http://www.wellslamontindustry.com/styl ... tyle=Y0122

Puppetboy - Your new gloves sound promising.

I'm going to say something that might get me nailed here on COW: The arguement is irrelivant once you actually start USING them which is the only way to get them to look screen accurate.

Also... they should fit, well.... Like a glove. Welcome to the madness.

Don't worry RK, your not gonna get nailed (at least not by me). I definitely agree that glove brand doesn't matter as long as their yellow/tan and are well-worn. :junior: -IJ

Flix4Me, it is the Y0122 I am starting with. As far as I could tell, it is the best match. However, now they come with the colored cuff banding I mentioned. I have also found a way to greatly lighten the mule stamp.

Would wiping the coloring of the mule with acetone and working the leather to smooth it out work?

If the cuff band isn't correct, I could always modify that.

On the other hand, if you make some gloves available for a decent price, you'll save me some work! :D

Ob1al said to post pics, so here ya go:

That's a crapshot of two of the pairs I found locally. Like I wrote, they aren't anything that hasn't been posted here in the past.

Do you own those two pairs of gloves? I would wear them, work them in the dirt then get back to us with after pics.

Ha! Ha! Actually, I'm thinking about returning them and getting the Y0122's instead. I do need some new work gloves, but I'm thinking I'll go buy them at Costco. Three pairs of WL's for $20! (not 1130's)

Which brings me to a gripe I have about the palm reinforcement on the new 1130's. My work gloves usually blow out in the fingers long before the palms go. The fingers is where they should use a tougher hide or something!

Here is a shot of my artificially distressed gloves:

Add water to the stuff shown in the middle and there is my method.

I figured I wouldn't be doing any digging or plowing in the dirt in the near future on my Campus, so I wanted to speed things up a bit look-wise without hurting the leather. ;)

Sorry... but this I don't get, how do you artifically distress gloves and why? You can get some work done AND get them to look great.

Ren,

You take a "goop" of Pecards and rub it on the gloves and it will give the appearance of being distressed.
